This is part of a larger trip. If anyone is intersted in a report on the following, I will post:

LAX-LHR (NZ, F)
MAN-ORD (BD, C)

I am just doing the RG segment, as I feel that it is a missing link in the trip reports.

I checked in at LHR about 3 hours early. Varig used the SAS check in area. I received an invitation to the Virgin Clubhouse (score!). Check in was easy, and I made my way to the VAT refund line, which took about 20 minutes.

I went through fast track, and did a bit of shopping. Nice thing about LHR and London in general is that the city cares about men's clothes. In the States, malls and shops cater mostly to women. The opposite is true at LHR. I bought some nice slippers for my future travels.

On to the lougnes. I wanted to check out as many * lounges as possible. I started with the UAL lounges. Been to the RCC, but never the F lounge. Alas, I was denied entry because I was not flying UA. I protested that I thought *A F passengers could use any F lounge. A defiant agent told me otherwise. Further, even though I had an F ticket, she demanded to see my *G card before allowing me into the RCC. I showed it to her and left.

Next, the Virgin Clubhouse. No, not a * lounge, but I did have an invitation. The receptionist was very nice, but did not think my flight warranted the pass. "Usually we only accept those travelling across the ocean, but as you have the invite, or course you may enter." WOnderful lounge with great selection of food.

I also went to the AC MLL, which was also nice. The SAS lounge is under construction, and the SQ lounge is in another area. Both the VS and AC lounges were much nicer that then always packed RCC.

Onto the flight. Boarding was on time, and the flight seemd pretty full. I was the only F pax. RG has one row of F on the MD-11 (2-2-2-). The personal video screens have been removed (not sure if from my aircraft or systemwide).

Upon being seeted, the FA offered me drink and asked me if I wanted a newspaper or magazine. They didn't have a ginger ale or a sprite or a seven up. So I settled on a diet coke. No Herald Tribune. Only English newspaper was two days old. (Ok, it WAS January 1, so I'll cut slack here).

Seat was a bit grubby. Recline and leg rest wsa ok, but not good. Most interational C seats are much better.

During the flight, I was served a plate of three small open faces sandwiches (a cream cheese, a nova, and a chicken). Additionally there was a small fruit salad, a small pie (apple?), and two chocolates. FA didn't ask if I wanted wine. No Duty Free. Inflight entertainment was on front screen.

We landed at 3:45. and it being the middle of winter, it was already pretty dark in CPH.

I was really looking forward to the RG flight. I thought it would be superior to SK's C flight, but I was mistaken. While the leg room was better, the quality was not.

So I can now cross Varig off my list of *A carriers to fly. It was fun, and I am glad I did it. But I would not want to fly them for a longer flight.

Zach,
whilst I can understand your comments, having enjoyed the same level of service on the hop from LHR to CPH on RG, bear in mind that the flight comes into LHR from long haul and crew and remaining passengers are just happy to get to their destination - CPH.
I have experienced this on other airlines as well, such as SA from FRA to AMS with the plane coming from JNB. You will never get the level of service that you normally would have on the long haul leg - however when going the opposite way such as CPH to LHR or in the old days hoping on DL from STR to AMS which then continued to ATL / JFK the level of service was / is what you can expect.
For RG I find their long haul service more or less on par with the other Star Partners - yes there are exceptions such as SQ or LH in F amongst others, but do not let this short hop experience spoil RG for you.

Cheers

Thomas,

All the same, I have flown SQ BRU/AMS-MAN and have had top notch service.

Zach,
you are absolutely correct - there are always exceptions to the rule - such as SQ http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Hmmm, First Class on Air New Zealand and - Jeezus - lowly Business Class on BMI... Oh, man... I don't know...

But alright then... I don't know about anybody else, but I suppose I could spare a few minutes to read such a report. Come to think of it, I vaguely recall hearing that even though Air New Zealand's First Class seats suck compared to the "Suites" out there, its food and service are some of the finest in the sky. So, if you could, like, possibly include a menu transcript... Well, I'd likely drop everything and maybe after my second or third orbit around the chandelier, I'd settle down enough to pop a cold one and peruse your report...

As for trans-Atlantic Business Class on BMI, well, after all my histrionics over a menu transcripted report on NZ's third longest flight, I'd be exhausted I know but there are a variety of over and under the counter stimulants out there that would help me plod on through. And if you were to include a menu transcript from that flight? Well, then I don need no steenking stimulants!

Right then. I gotta return to therapy now. And yes, I'd be interested!

I flew Varig in 1978 in Y and in those days it was great. It seems their service has greatly declined in the past few years, as they face grave financial problems. Same with Qantas.

Well, I had some rerouting.... Due to weather, I missed the BD flight and had to cross the pond on SK.

I flew BD in C last year and thought it was the best in its class. Really superb.

Today's SK flight, CPH-IAD on a 767 in C was really, really, ordinary. Seats were tired, recline at a minimum, leg rests that did little. Food was good, but not stellar.

Oh well!

I'll get to the NZ report in the next couple of days.

I haven't been into the Virgin Clubhouse at Heathrow for some years now.

Do they still have the model railway that goes round the front of the bar and can be used (I am not going to say "played with") by patrons. Last time I was there I asked the barman for a go with it. Obviously no one had done so for a while. Neither of us noticed that he had placed a bowl of peanuts on the tracks (which were at bar height) at one point on the circle! The derailment was dealt with in a moment, but there were peanuts everywhere.

By the way, the IFE screens were stripped from the MD-11s due to an FAA Airworthiness Directive following the Swissair acident at Halifax, Nova Scotia some years ago, where it was found that features of the IFE had contributed to the in-flight fire.
