Saw a post here about another Loews property, so thought i'd chime in with this one.
After staying out near LAX, I got a bit sick of it all and wanted to head to somewhere nice near the beach, hence Santa Monica.
After numerous attempts on priceline getting up to US$170, and still no luck, I gave hotwire a go, and bing US$119. Cost of parking is additional at US$24 per 24 hour period. Breakfast not included. Parking is a full valet service, hence tipping is req'd.
The room, whilst they normally give you a moutain view, I was given a beach view room on one of the upper levels 6 i think. The room was superb, with all the mod cons - CD player, DVD player I believe, colour tv in the bath-tub, big bottle of shampoo, moisturiser, conditioner, glycerine soaps (all x2), the dialup phone rates are pricey - US$1 for the first 20 mins, then something very expensive after that on a per min basis.
The beds were superb, I got 2 doubles. They do an evening turn down service. There is a loafer chair near the window which slides open with a balcony which is about 2 cm deep! The TV was large, and the mini bar requires a key which you break if you want to keep anything else cold. The buffet looked nice, but i skipped it and went down to the beach, rented a bike (around US$12/day or US$18/day for a multigear bike), cycled down to venice beach where there are some great nick nack stores and great pizza... the best!! also started a trek out to beverly hills, glad I turned back after a while! road was fine and not busy as it was over thanksgiving this year.
Santa monica blvd and the shopping area around there was good, in fact most of the shopping bits and pieces you'd need - A http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsup.gifF, old navy, sears, etc.
Loews also have a program which allows you to sign up and earn 500 aa miles per stay, and also upon signing up you get a welcome privlege (ie cookies and milk, wine, etc - choice of what you want on arrival) - and does not require any min stays - nice. Received a paper in the morning.
The pool area is great, though the pool is a little on the shallow side. The pool water is nice and warm (just right) and the jacuzzi - even warmer!! very nice. The gym is huge with lots to do in there. it is also very modern. There are lifts directly to the front of the hotel and a walk down to the beach, the entrance is actually on the side of the main road, rather than the beach side.
It was a nice end to a trip to LA, definitely would stay there again.
