I needed 480 miles to clinch DL GM. I was originally going to fly to LAS but when the $106 rt fare to SDF (Louisville, KY) showed up I grabbed it. The original plan was to meet a friend for lunch in SDF but he wasn't able to get out of work.

LAX CRC
The bartender was pushing Vanilla Coke. The computer was down. Both were recuring themes throughout the trip.

LAX-ATL (11:55pm - 7am) 767 (domestic)

The plane was full (but not oversold). I got the emergency exit row with the seat in front removed. I was happy but the guy across the way was complaning the plane was too old and Delta has the oldest fleet in the nation (is that true?).
The nice thing about the LAX redeye is that it leaves late at 11:55pm. The SAN redeye leaves at 10:30pm. With such a late departure, I can get on the plane and fall right asleep - which I did.

ATL-SDF (8am - 9am) 727
I got the emergency exit row on the 727. First time on a 727 and it wasn't bad. With the engine in the back things were quiet. I slept until approach.
On approach I noticed that we were on a downwind landing. Being a private pilot I noticed things like this. Looking out the window at the flags and smoke I could see that we were flying with the wind rather than into the wind on approach. I mentioned this to the captain as I got out of the plane. He said I was quite observant and they landed with the wind rather than into the wind for noise abatement procedures.

SDF-CVG (10am - 11am) ComAir RJ
Since my friend bailed on me I decided to get right back to California. The ComAir gate agent had to rebooked me in Y (from T) and convert my eticket into a paper ticket to get me confirmed all the way through to LAX.
The RJ flight was full. No service on this 20 minute flight, just mints handed out by the FA.

CVG-LAX (12:30pm - 2:30pm) 757
I contemplated putting myself on the upgrade list since I was rebooked in 'Y' by ComAir. My seat assignment said 'Y' but my paperticket said 'T'. I ended up not giving it a try.
In the 2 years as a GM on DL I've always flown coach (exit row) since I always fly LUT fares. This was the first time I've flown in a regular coach seat and it was awful! The lady next to me was in shock when the person in front reclined right into her face. She also complained about how mean the FAs were on this flight. I would have to concur esp when I ended up with a cranberry juice instead of a grapefruit juice (the FA didn't even listen to me when I said grapefruit twice). A kid tried to get to the bathroom and the FA sent him back since she won't move the drink cart back a seat for him to get by!

Overall a whirlwind trip. 4800 flown miles in 14 hours. 9600 base miles, 14400 miles total. 7/10 cent per mile. If only I could have flown it on AA! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Do you fly over 25K miles a year? Why don't you try flying on a airline like CO or NW, evan HP. You could get free upgrades and no hassels like DL gives you.

Actually however, if the new aliance does go through, you probably wont have any problems with free upgrades on the new NW/CO/DL!

Lets hope.
