Trip Reports - 777 economy configuration: which is best?
On the 777, most airlines use 2-5-2. Others have 3-4-2, 3-3-3, and a few even 3-4-3. Of course nobody wants the dreaded middle seat in the section of five....unless all five seats are open. Personally, I think 3-4-2 is the best compromise, but this seems to be the least chosen configuration. Any thoughts/preferences?

You'll want to steer clear and far away from Continental (3-3-3) if comfort is what you're after aboard a 777.
Recommend UA (2-5-2 Economy Plus configured; even non-Economy Plus configured is better than Continental's Cell Block D seating) or AA.

While I was thankfully not in the middle seat of the 5, I did, however, get seat 28B from JFK to LHR. This is before I knew about seatguru and after a day where AA was stuffing me about big time with delays and changed connections, etc. So I wasn't really on the ball. Being opposite the lavatory was bad, especially in the morning!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/eek.gif I can't believe AA configured their 777 so the door opens directly towards a seat! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/thumbsdown.gif Please learn from my misfortune!!

Hmmm, AA has the 2-5-2 configuration on the 777, add More room than coach and you have a pretty comfortable seating arrangement.
So why "stay clear " ??
Assuming equal seat pitch, which would you choose:
A. 3-3-3
B. 2-5-2
C. 2-4-3
(Actually, I have not see an airline with 2-4-3. Are there any out there?)

See the KL forum. I think Egyptair uses this.
Don't forget the 3-4-3 configuration EK, NG and TG, amont others, use.

Thanks. I did not include 3-4-3 because I can't imagine anyone actually preferring it...
So the choices are A, B or C.

Typical TG, using the 10 abreast 3-4-3 when the 777 is a 9 abreast aircraft. They also have some 777's configured with 8 abreast in C class. I keep asking myself why I fly this stinky airline instead of MH. Flying TG is NOT smooth as silk!
As for what is best I prefer the 2-5-2 especially if you are in the economy plus 2 section on UA.

I like 3-3-3 because that gives you the best odds of snagging enough seats to yourself to get some sleep. Loads have to be really light and you have to be really on the ball to get a whole row of 5 to yourself, but I've been on many a flight where supply exceeded demand for empty banks of 3 seats.
