Trip Report:
This is the first leg of my wedding and honeymoon trip PDX-SEA-EWR-BOS- marriage - SFO-SYD- honeymoon - BNE-CNS-AYQ-SYD-SFO-PDX!!
UPDATE: Unofficial wedding photos now up at http://www.lordmitford.com/photos/FrameSet.htm
10/2 Leg 1: PDX-SEA
Continental flight 8284 (operated by Horizon Airlines) - Dash 8 Seats 9D+E, departed on time at 7.30pm, arrived on time at 8.30pm.
What a crazy day!, I have a bad back at the moment so I started the day by going to my regular physical therapy: exercise, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, and ice pack.
Unfortunately they forgot about me, and 30 minutes later I had a second degree cold burn 6 inches across on my hip from the ice pack.
Next bad event of the day was our car to the airport not showing up, after a call they arrived 15 minutes late, getting us to the airport 75 minutes before departure.
At PDX we needed to check in for our flights PDX-SEA-EWR-BOS, we had booked the flights on continental.com and did not see anything saying it was a paper ticket, we never received a paper ticket, but when we got to the airport (with two large bags to check, a large wedding dress, and carry-on bags) we were told we were on a paper ticket!.
The Continental check-in agent was very polite and helpful, and after 30 minutes on the phone she had got paper tickets printed and sent us off to the Horizon check-in.
Of course, flying one-way on tickets issued minutes before raised all sorts of security red flags so our checked bags were sniffed/scanned, we got a good pat down at security, then at the gate we got the full secondary screening (the secondary screeners were very good and made sure I didn't get to see the wedding dress before the big day).
The flight itself was a quick 40 minute hop up the coast on a Dash-8, it was about half full and the service was excellent with a complimentary local beer and chardonnay available. The snack was a pack of sweet & sour wasabi flavor wild rice chips
10/2 Leg 2: SEA-EWR
Continental Flight 1280, 737-800/900 Seats 7D+F, Departed on time at 10.30pm, arrived a little early at 6.10am
We had time at SEA for a quick 15 minute massage to help my back and a quick snack while we watched the Yankees lose game 2 of the playoffs then off to the gate and onto the plane.
We were a little disappointed that the FA didn't make room to hang the wedding dress in a closet, and also there was only one empty seat in the aircraft so we just had to make the most of trying in sleep in coach on a red-eye.
Remarkably for me I was asleep before the plane left the ground and only woke up twice during the 4.5 hr flight.
I have no idea if food was served on this flight.
10/3 Leg 3: EWO-BOS
Continental Flight 30, 737-300 Seats 6A+C, Departed on time at 7.30AM, arrived on time around 8.30AM
Mostly uneventful flight, had an empty middle seat between us and the aircraft was only about 2/3 full. Drink service but no snack as we were only in the air for 45 mins.
After arriving in Boston we picked up the massive checked luggage and dragged it out to the Hertz bus, my car was waiting in the gold section next to the bus drop-off, I guess it qualified as the first upgrade of the honeymoon (other than two confirmed Hilton upgrades to suites).
The wedding (10/3-10/7):
Well its now 10/7, and I'm sitting in the red carpet club at BOS drinking a white wine with a wedding ring on my finger.
The weekend started well, after picking up te hire car we headed down to Cape Cod, and checked into the Belfry Inne in Sandwich where we were staying for 4 nights and where we were having our wedding and reception on Sunday evening.
The Belfry Inne ( http://www.belfryinn.com/ ) is a beautiful converted church and rectory, the ground floor of the church is a small bistro with excellent food and the upstairs had six bedrooms named Monday through Saturday (Sunday is the fire exit). We were in Tuesday which has 30 foot ceilings, a massive stained glass window above the bed, a fireplace, and a 2 person hot-tub: the perfect place to spend the last few days before the wedding (the only downside was that my mother was on one side in Monday and my fiancé’s parents were on the other side in Wednesday.
After freshening up we headed out to meet up with my mother, brother, and sister-in-law. They had flown in the previous day on Virgin from LHR in coach and had had a good flight, it was my mother's first flight for 40 years and she was a bit nervous and jumpy when they hit a little turbulence but otherwise she did well. We had ordered the diabetic meal for her, at first the forgot it but when they remembered she said it was "quite nice".
The plan was to head to Provincetown where we had booked a whale watching trip, unfortunately the weather was rough and the trip had been cancelled so instead we got to drive around the cape seeing the sights (including a cranberry pond).
The following day was spent organizing the hairdresser, makeup, tux rental, and playing taxi to friends who for some crazy reason had flown from BOS to Martha’s Vineyard instead of just getting a car.
The plan for Saturday was to get the ferry and explore Martha’s Vineyard during the day and then head to a rehearsal dinner in the evening. Martha’s Vineyard was a lot of fun with a hyperactive 6 year old in tow, and the rehearsal dinner was excellent. It wasn't a traditional rehearsal dinner as we only had one attendant (the "Person of Honor") along with the 6 year old flower girl and a 2 year old ring bearer, instead we invited all 30 wedding guests to a seafood buffet at a restaurant on the waterfront.
Sunday was wedding day. I had tried to convince my fiancé to pack light so this necessitated a trip to the Laundromat first thing in the morning. I was then kicked out of our room for the hairdresser and makeup artist to do their magic. For the next 4 hours I wandered around waiting for things to get started. We had made everything really simple and casual so there were no nerves or vows to memorize etc.
At 5pm we started taking photographs outside and this was the first time I saw the dress that my fiancé had designed and made over the past 6 months. It was stunning!!. At 6 the ceremony started in the garden and by 6.15 it was finished, a couple of tears and a very excited 2 year old were the highlights http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Following more photographs we headed in for Hors D'oeuvres and much needed cosmopolitans.
I know how people here like to see menus so here is the menu for the reception:
Hors D'oeuvres:
Side of Sliced Smoked Salmon
Scallops wrapped in Bacon
Jumbo Shrimp Cocktail
Phyllo Chicken & Asparagus
Tomato Basil Crostini
Crab stuffed Mushroom Caps
Crab Cake appetizer
Ceaser salad
Choice of Petit Filet Mignon in a red wine sauce served with a seasonal stuffed baby pumpkin and a rice pyramid, or
Filet of Sole with a Seafood Stuffing and a Lemon Wine Butter Sauce served with a seasonal stuffed baby pumpkin and a rice pyramid
Wedding Cake
Wine:
Champagne Toast
Chianti Classico Riserva, Castello Di Poppiano 98 Italy
Chassagne-Montrachet, Daviot-Perrin 98 France
Merlot, Michelton 98 Australia
Chardonnay, Heron 00 California
This was followed by an open bar and some cigar smoking, all accompanied (as throughout the ceremony and reception) by piano and flute/sax/vocals.
We called it a night around 11.30pm but a few friends went out drinking until 4 and spent the rest of the night talking to the big white telephone.
Today was a relaxing day, packing, paying the rest of the bills, and driving back to BOS ready for our First class BOS-SFO then Business class SFO-SYD.
More to follow in a few days......
