Trip Reports - HEL-PDX-HEL (and some connecting flights) on SK, AS and AY

I guess it's time to tell you the tale of the delayed flights and the screaming babies...
Thanks to a tip on FT last year, I was able to buy a R/T HEL-PDX (via CPH and SEA) ticket for only $95 (plus tax). Getting to HEL proved to be quite tricky since I couldn't just buy a separate CPH-HEL ticket (imagine having you luggage tag saying (CPH)-HEL-CPH-SEA-PDX, not very likely to work...)
Instead, I bought a cheap MMX-ARN-HEL ticket, and thereby forcing myself to get on five flights in one day http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Here's the first part of the story:

MMX-ARN, SK 106, B737, scheduled: 06.50-08.00, actual: 07.15-08.15, load: 100%
The day started just great, pouring rain and the taxi was late. Would I actually make it to MMX before check-in closed? Luckily, I made it by about 20 seconds...
SAS had implemented their summer schedule, meaning that there was only one MMX-ARN morning flight instead of the normal three. The flight was fully booked, and there were lots of stand-by appssengers (mostly dirty kids going home from the Roskilde rock festival) tryimg to get on the plane. No such luck for them, and they all had to wait for the next plane (4 hours later).
The chick-in was simple (no line at the check-in machine), and I headed over to the gate and the security control. Since they only had one metal detector (and people couldn't figure out that keys and mobile phones could actually set off the detector...), boarding was slow and the flight left a bit late. No major worries, though.
The SAS breakfast (bread roll, cold cuts, yoghurt, müsli) was pretty decent. No complaints, but not especially uplifting either. The landing was smooth, and then it was time to head over to the international terminal at ARN. The lines for check-in were very long, but (as usual) nobody was using the check-in machines. Go figure...
The longest lines were at the desks designated for flights to the U.S., with all the extra questions that had to be asked.
I went through security and decided to check out the new F concourse. Lots of open space, but nothing in particular to watch, so I headed back to the main terminal.

ARN-HEL, SK 1701, MD80, scheduled: 10.25-12.20, actual: 10.40-12.20, load: 75%
A short flight that should have been nice and quiet, but instead it turned pretty badly. It's amazing to see how ignorant some parents can be. There were a few kids on the plane, and the parants did absolutely NOTHING to comfort the kids that were crying. When asked to please try to make the kids quiet, the responses were really hostile." We've actually paid for a ticket for the kid. He has every right to be on the plane. Please shut up!"
I'm not questioning the kid's right to travle with his parents, but what part of a ticket purchase gives someone the right to disturb all the other passengers? I'm blaming the parents, not the kid. If the parents would at least TRY to comfort the kid, there would be less of a problem. The flight itself was nice and quick. Refreshments and a sandwich were served, and we landed safely at HEL.
After collecting my bag and cehcking it back in again (you can't check a bag from MMX to the U.S. because of the lack of baggage x-ray facilities at MMX), I met up with my parents who had also bought cheap HEL-PDX tickets. I wlaked around HEL, and couldn't help wondering how anyone could actually like this place. It is so sterile, and the prices are so high.

HEL-CPH, SK 1711, MD80, scheduled: 14.00-14.40, actual: 14.20-14.40, load: 80%
Nothing in particular to notice, but of course there were some crying kids onboard. This this, though, the parents tried to comfort the kids, so I didn't have a problem with the situation. The flight crew was the same as on the ARN-HEL flight, and the F/A recognized me. Short flight, small lunch (I don't even remember what food was served...), and we landed at CPH almost on time. We headed directly to the flight to SEA, and it was quite a long walk from gate B20 to gate C30.
A35.

CPH-SEA, SK 937, A340, scheduled: 15.35-16.35, actual: 16.30-16.35, load: 100%
The flight was severely overbooked, and they were offering big money to volunteer to fly the next day instead. I didn't want to, and neither did my parents since they were upgraded to C class because of the booking situation. I had already pre-assigned a seat, so I was stuck in Y. After a while I realized that perhaps I could also be upgraded, but by the time I made it back to the service desk, all C class seats were already gone. Bummer!
The flight was pretty nice, and the IFE system was pretty cool. The takeoff and the flight over Greenland looked pretty nice on the screen. The movie selection wasn't that great, but I watched "Johnny Q" and listened to a couple of the audio channels. The "Disco" and "vinyl" channels were really good :-)
The food was nothing fancy, fried turkey with veggies for dinner, and meatball sandwiches a short while before landing at SEA. I thought the seat was pretty cramped. The IFE box and the footrest didn't exactly improve the legroom, so it was rather uncomfortable. Oh well, I guess that's what you get when you travel in Y!
Thanks to favorable winds, we landed on time.

SEA-PDX, AS 2430, F28, scheduled: 19.30-20.20, actual: 19.50-20.30, load: 80%
Our original flight to PDX had been cancelled beacuse of technical provblems, so we had to wait for the next plane. It had been a long while since I was on an F28, and the interior looked rather worn and old, and so did the pilots. I guess there aren't any young pilots trained on the F28. The flight itself was rather eventless. The F/A (dressed in a Hawaii shirt and shorts, could you imagine that on a BA flight? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif) served a bag of potato chips (from Washington, of course...) and some microbrew beer (from Oregon).
We landed safely and headed over to Alamo to pick up the rental car. We were upgraded from a compact to an SUV (Suzuki Vitara XL-7), so we didn't complain too much even though the SUV is quite a fuel hog.

More to come later!

Thanx for the report. How much did they offer to volunteers on the CPH-SEA? Was it more then the normal 800$ since you had to stay the night in CPH?

As far as I remember, there were two options offered:

1) C class ticket the next day plus night at hotel
2) $800 in vouchers (or $400 in cash), Y class the next day plus night at hotel

Thank you for the great report http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I regret I didn't buy that ticket (or 4) when I had the chance http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

Can you reveal what you spend on the MMA-HEL ticket ??

I am a bit surprised that they didnt offer more since this would mean you would arrive in SEA about 24 hours late.

So what would I have choosed?
C class credit to Air Canada Aeroplan only gives a 25% bonus so I would go for the 800$ in vouchers and seating in row 31 or economy extra and spend the night at Hilton Copenhagen Airport of course http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I guess it's time for the second part of my trip report.

After travelling around Oregon (route: Portland-Salem-Eugene-Crater
Lake-Grants Pass-Cresent City-Gold Beach-Newport-Corvalis-Bend-John
Day-Baker City-Pendelton-The Dalles-Boring-Newburg-Oregon City-Portland), we
returned the car to Alamo. No problems with the return, but our car car
was by far the dirtiest car returned that day http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

PDX-SEA, AS ???, scheduled: 14.30-15.30, actual: 15.45-16.30.

When we checked in at the Horizon desk, we had a minor problem getting
our bags checked all the way through to ARN. It seems like Horizon and
Finnair don't have a luggage agreement. Strange... We managed to get
seats on the 3.30 flight instead of the 4.30 flight originally booked,
giving us some extra time at SEA.
After all the truble of getting the bags checked all the way through,
the next thing was inevitable: "Your bags have been selected for
security screening".
My bags went through without any problems, but my parents had bought
some wine, and the bottles were manually checked.

After going through the security control (where my mother got
stuck nad had to have her shoes x-rayed...), we made it over to the Horizon waiting area. The situation was not
very nice.
A short list of the PDX-SEA flights status:

2.30 flight cancelled (mechanical)
3.00 flight cancelled (late aircraft)
3.30 flight (my flight) cancelled (late aircraft)
4.00 flight delayed, estimated departure 5.10

Our flight from SEA to CPH was scheduled to leave at 7.00, so we had to
make it up there somehow. The problem was even bigger for the people
who were supposed to take the 6.00 flight from SEA to LHR.
Suddenly, the 2.30 flight was supposed to be operationg again, but a
bit delayed. The people with connections at SEA were put on the flight,
but there wasn't room for everybody.
My mother was selected for a random security screening (she always gets
into trouble...), and then we boarded the Dash 4 to SEA. The flight attendant used phrases like "Again, welcome this Horizon flight to Seattle". They had boarded the passengers earlier, but had to off-load because of a mechanical problem (now solved). The flight
itself was pretty bumpy and noisy. I didn't think it was gonna be that
noisy. I have faint memories of previous flights on the Dash 4, and they
weren't that noisy. Perhaps it was because of the mechanical problem ) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
The cheery F/A served potato chips and beverages. Since I wasn't gonna
be driving for a while, I had the microbrew. Very tasty! A smooth
landing and a long taxi to the terminal.

SEA-CPH, SK938

Once inside the terminal, we tried to find some kind of transfer desk
where we could get our SAS boarding passes. We suspected that the flight
was gonna leave from the S terminal, but we weren't sure. Instead we
went to the regular SAS check-in desks. Here's a story I just have to
tell you:
There were three girls checking in with HUGE bags. They were going to
Denmark or Sweden as exchange students, and had decided that they needed
to bring lots of stuff. The first girl's bag weighed 120 pounds!
Needless to say, she needed to take some stuff out and put in a cardboard
box given to her by the staff.
So what can you bring that weighs 120 pounds? When I went to California
as an exchange student, I brought one backpack, weighing 30 pounds, so I
was a little bit curious of what this girl was bringing. She started
repacking right by the check-in (she couldn't move the bag out of the
way...), and I happened to see some stuff she had packed:

25-30 books, mostly novels. We DO have libraries in Europe, you know...
3 mirrors (in the checked luggage!)
10 photo albums. Nice, but heavy.
Lots of CDs. Next time, bring the discs, but lose the cases.
4 teddy bears. So much for being a grown-up...
and so on...

The two other girls "only" had about 100 pounds each, so they also had
to move some stuff to a box.
Our check-in went smooth, and were given seats in row 36. I got the
aisle seat http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
After running around the airport to spend my last dollars, we made it
abord the plane. The flight wasn't not full, which surprised me
somewhat. I guess there were a big number of no-shows.
After the beverage service it was time for dinner (chicken with some kind of vegetable). The food wasn't very
good, and I only ate some of it. The food was much better on the
CPH-SEA flight.
After dinner the IFE system was switched on. I watched "The Rookie" and
"Crossroads". Britney can't act!
Some quick thoughts about the flight and people's behavior: If you want
to get past somebody when you need to take a dump or something, why not
tell the person next to you, even if he/she is sleeping? This is much
better than the method used by some: grab a hold of two seats and try to
jump over the person sitting next to you. Since the seats flex when
subjected to such treatment, you WILL wake at least two people up instead
of just the person sitting next to you. Think! How hard can it be? One
more thing: I don't appreciate when the person sitting behind me puts
his smell feet on my armrest (don't ask me how he managed to get them
there). Common sense applies in the air.
After listening to the "Disco" and "vinyl" channels and watching some
comedy, breakfast was served. Kind of strange since it was about 1.00
p.m. in CPH. So much for helping the body adjust to the time difference.
The landing was very slow and smooth, and it seemed like we were never
gonna land.
After clearing immigration, it was time to walk over to the flight to
HEL.

CPH-HEL and HEL-ARN
I was really tired and slept through the flights. I should have been
awake to take notes for this trip report http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
