Aer Lingus #145
DUB-LAX
6/13/02
Airbus 330-200
Depart: 11:50am (20 minutes late)
Arrive: 2:50pm
Seat: 1A

After a quick trip to Europe for a cousin’s wedding, it was time to head back to Los Angeles. On the way over I flew Iberia. So for a change I thought I’d try EI on the way home since they have a non-stop from Dublin. I get tired of changing planes midway. I’d rather have the connection up front or at the end. This Trip Report starts off a bit negative but quickly becomes positive.

CHECK-IN: Grade: C
My day began in London where I checked in at LHR. I asked about taking an earlier flight to DUB since I was there early but he said that it had just left. So I got my boarding passes and went on the long walk to the gate/lounge area. When I got there I saw that there was a flight to DUB that hadn’t even begun to board yet. I asked the customer service rep if I could get on it and they said yes there was room in C but since I had checked baggage, it would not be possible. I sure wish the check-in guy would have figured this out!

LOUNGE: Grade: D
The Premier lounge at LHR is dismal: no TV, no windows, no computers/internet, uncomfortable chairs. The whole while I was thinking that I could have been on the early flight and then been sitting in the Premier lounge in DUB which is bound to be better since DUB is their home.

FLIGHT LHR-DUB: Grade: B The flight was delayed getting in and so it left about 45 minutes late making my DUB connection quite tight.

BOARDING: Grade: A+
As I was waiting to exit the aircraft in DUB, I was paged. Once up front they said an EI was here to escort me to my next flight. Interestingly, there was a passenger in Y who was also on my flight to LAX but they didn’t call her name!

The very nice woman apologized for the delays and said that we would be going through “back way” to get to my flight. Several security doors and an elevator ride later we were at the Pre-Clearance US Customs station where she whisked me through brought me to the gate where they were just about to board. Aer Lingus gets an A+ for this personalized service.

I boarded our Airbus 330-200 and easily found my seat, 1A. The staff was very friendly from the very first moment. I look fairly young and dress very informally (i.e. jeans, old t-shirt, old leather jacket, beat up boots…). Sometimes I get attitude from flight staff and was pleased to see that they were very gracious.

Luckily C class was about 1/3 full so I had the seat next to mine free and no one was behind me. We were offered water, OJ and champagne. Because it was a vacation, I chose the Pannier Brut Champange which was only decent. CX FC has spoiled me on Brut!!. They passed out the menu and the amenity kits which contained the usual plus ear plugs and refreshing spray like CX. All the flight staff introduced themselves to me when they first spoke which I really appreciate.

IN-FLIGHT SERVICE: Grade: A
We took off just a few minutes late but the pilot said we’d make up lots of time in the air. As soon as we were in the air, the entertainment system began. It offered a handful of movie channels and then a variety of others. It also had about 8 games including blackjack. I enjoy having the free seat next to me so I can play games on one screen while watching a movie on the other. I was pretty lucky at blackjack on that flight; I was up about $3,000! I just wish it was real.

Here’s the menu the flight:

Appetizer:
SHOYU OF SALMON MARINATED JAPANESE STYLE, Thai Dressing
or
TERRINE OF DUCK BREAST with Cumberland and port sauce

Both served with mixed salad with dressing and freshly baked breads

Main Courses:
FILLET OF BEEF FORESTIERE with Madeira sauce, mixed wild mushrooms, wholebeans and rosti potato
or
HONEY ROAST LOIN OF KASSLER, smoked pork with sweet and spicy sauce, cabbage and parsnip parcels, pomme parsley
or
SEAFOOD PANCAKE, prawns and lobster in a cognac sauce glazed with cheese and served with asparagus
or
VEGETARIAN KEBABS, marienated vegetables in rosemary on rice pilaf with kidney beans, raisins and a mild curry sauce

Dessert:
A selection from the trolley (a variety of cakes and tarts)

Cheese:
Cheese plate and fresh fruit with port or liqueur

Tea or Coffee

White Wine:
Yarra Valley Chardonnay, De Bortoli, 1999
Savingnon Blanc, Kenwood, 2000

Red Wine:
Chateau Cantemerle 1998, Haut-Medoc
Cabernet Sauvignon 1998, Raymond, Napa Valley
Shiraz 1999, Geyser Peak, Sonoma Valley

Drinks were passed out quickly and I had my usual vodka tonic, the vodka was surprisingly Smirnoff red label! I’d expect something more for C class service. Along with the drink, came a pre-lunch canapé of fresh veggies and cheese/crakers

Then just as soon as I finished, the purser came around with a tray of different canapés from which we could choose. Most were previously fried but all had good flavor.

Next came a deliciously marinated smoked salmon served with a side salad. Very good!

For the main course, I choose the seafood crepe. It was one of the best courses I have ever been served on a plane. It had HUGE chucks of prawns and lobster.

For dessert I choose some sort of chocolate cheesecake which I ate even though there was hardly any room.

Finally the meal ended with some cheese, fruit and chocolates.

I watched “Vanilla Sky” throughout the meal. Not a very good movie but perfect for a plane because you could miss part of it and still know what is going on. One of the movie selections was “Tootie” which I always enjoy even though I’ve seen it many times.

About two-thirds the way through the flight, they served “Light Snack” which included a selection of sandwiches and fresh gateaux. I had to pass on most of it but did manage to get a little gateaux down!

I slept for three hours somewhere along the flight. I had only gotten three hours of sleep in London so I was pretty tired. By the way, we dined at Orrery’s in London and it was stunning. VERY GOOD French food though a little pricey at £80 per person. A perfect date restaurant!

Prior to landing they served the “Afternoon Meal” of VEGETABLE QUICHE or MEDALLIONS OF BEEF with mixed lettuce leaves with Horseradish sauce both served with FRESH PATRIES. I had the beef which was quite good. The pastries were also tasty.

I was VERY IMPRESSED with the quality and quantity of food. No one went hungry on this flight. Throughout the entire flight, the flight attendants kept all our drinks filled.

SEAT: Grade:B
The seat was fully electronic and had the typical international business recline. I haven’t heard if they’re going to compete with their neighbor BA and put in 180 degrees seats. But for a non-flat seat, it was very comfortable.

We landed about 40 minutes early at LAX. Unfortunately a Thai 747 was at our gate so we had to wait a about 30 minutes.

I was the first one off the plane and was met by an EI ground staff who led the way to customs and baggage claim. She was VERY friendly and asked me about my flight experience. I told her that I had flown over on IB and this easily topped that.

I had checked two bags and of course since the connection was tight in DUB, one did not make it. They delivered it to my house the next day. I was impressed that they called three times updating me of its status.

Overall I really enjoyed the flight. I wish I had seen the lounge in DUB because I would like to use EI in the future on my way to other European points. It’s very convenient that they have a non-stop from LA.

Great trip-report olafman!

May I ask, what sort of camera do you use, and do you ever get questioned by the crew as to why you're photographing the meal service? Have you ever done the same on AA? I'm just about to buy a Sony digital camera so I want to photo-document my next trip in 3 weeks time. I'm just wondering if I'm going to get any grief from the crew when I do it....!

I use a Canon Powershot s10. It's about dead and I'm about to buy the Powershot s200.

I tend to be discrete when taking photos. No one really notices.

I have a photo trip report on AA at:

Thank you, olafman, for sharing your experiences on EI. We don't often hear about them so I am glad to know more about their service. Thank you, too, for the photos. That salmon and salad course looked wonderful!

One comment concerning the service: EI certainly makes it clear that one is flying "Premier Business Class." It was very apparent, in your photo of the Seafood Crepe course, that they deliver the message at every turn. Seems a bit much to me; maybe it's just that the "Premier" brand is so noticeable against the pure white plates and serving pieces, all of which seemed to be positioned so that "Premier" was staring you in the face. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

And you didn't find the Pannier Brut to your liking? Well, I suppose it is difficult to step down from Krug. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks again,

Bill

Great report. It just popped into my head, you know how airliner are so engrossed in maing sure the passenger and the bag match, well in this like one bag doe snot make the connection, the passenger does make the connection, so the bag must be taken on a later flight without the passengers. Is this a security flaw?

Also was the plane a 767-200 or an Airbus something?

How did you find the legroom right in front of you to be in 1A, taking out that there was no one next to you?

bbinchi: I think branding is very important for airlines especially when selling a business class product as "Premier". It's an interesting choice. I was impressed that the flight attendants turned the dishes and glasses around to have the "Premier" label facing the right way like they do on CX.

STAM4NICK: I don't think they consider it a breach of sercurity when it is their choice to fly without it. When the customer makes the choice, they should be concerned.

The plane was a lovely Airbus 330-200. There was lots of room in the first row even if someone would have been there. I think you'll like it.

Thanks for sharing this great report. One seldom hears about EI and it was refreshing to learn more about it. I'm glad you had a great experience. It seems to me that their inflight crew has quite a positive reputation and your report just confirms that.

I find that the branding of PREMIER on the china is a bit overdone. They could have used a more stylish design or pattern, instead of spelling the class of service. I noticed that the crystal glasses are nice. Probably "Waterford Crystal". I think MH uses the same type of glassware.

Just bought a Sony Cybershot DSC-P9 (4 mil. pixels) and it's awesome (and I don't even work for Sony http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif). Just make sure to get an extra battery!

Great trip report olafman - food looks much better than BA's!

Canista,

SNAP - just also bought a P9 (on my recent trip to the World Cup in Japan. I had originally intended to buy the P5, but the deal was so good on the P9, that I just had to have it !! What a camera - I am now a SONY junkie ..... Got a spare battery and memory sticks over there, so I'm now all set for everything ....

Also, nice to hear the positive feedback on my home carrier - we have always been known for good staff, and glad to see that the service and food match this !
I personally think that the "Premier" branding is not too much, and actually is quite unobtrusive (IMHO). The green lettering on white doesn't scream too loudly at you .....

I will be partaking in this service also for Christmas this year on a DUB - JFK flight (and return) with my new wife (our first Christmas together http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif). BTW Aer Lingus also provides a Limo at both ends for Premier passengers (within 40 miles).

I enjoyed your report and the photos!

In spite of my s/n, I haven't actually flown Aer Lingus in about 3 years. However, when I flew with them in Premier in '98 and '99, the service/food was simply superlative.

I must say, I'm impressed by how EI is maintaining a high levels of service despite considerable financial hardships. Let's hope it continues...

Very nice report, thanks. EI sounds pretty good and should (*hope*) SWISS ever fully get into OW, then I would love to try the Shamrock on a hop across the pond...

Thanks for the nice pictures. I flew Aer Lingus in Y 10 years ago from NYC to Shannon and it was excellent. The only problem is that they are facing severe financial problems and their long term survivalis questionable.

Thanks for the comments! I am tempted to use EI for my transatlantic flight now, but I want to find out if any meal is served on the LHR-DUB flight. Thanks again, Carfield

Carfield,

LHR - DUB in Y has generally only a drinks service; however in business class, a meal is served - hot breakfast, cold lunch plate or hot dinner meal .... Generally quite (to very) good as such meals could go. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Yes, JAP is right. We had a nice meal served on my LHR-DUB flight. BE SURE TO SIT on the AC side of the aircraft instead of the DEF side. The AC have a bit more elbow room.

I use the Cannon S200 digital camera. It is 2 megapixel and has great great quality. The number one reason I bought it though was the size. It is the size of the elph camera. You can put it in your pocket. The battery recharger is very small and easy to pack. It doesn't have a big long cord, just a base you plug directly into the wall. The battery charges in just a few hours. I charge mine at night on my trips. It comes with an 8MB card which doesn't hold hardly any pictures. I bought a 128MB card and it has a capacity of almost 250 pictures. The software that comes with the camera is quite good too.
