Another year is almost over and its time to look back at your travelling year. Here is my travel year and I hop you will tell me yours as well.

Total segments:70
Non rev segments:14
Paid segments: 56

Business Class: 3
Economy Class: 67

SAS: 66 segments
AC: 3 segments
UA: 1 segment

Mileage Runs: 2

The year started at usual in January and that month and December are the only two month of this year that I haven’t been travelling at all. Next year my goal is to travel at least one segment each month and try to get as close to 100K on Air Canada Aeroplan as possible.

February 2001
Not a big travel month at all. Only four segments, all on SK when I flew down to MMX to visit my sister and watch some hockey.

March 2001
Five segments on SAS and my first intercont trip for the year. I attended the Catman Do III in New York in late march and this is so far the only Flyertalk meeting I have been on (if you don’t count two small dinners in Stockholm). New York was a great city and I am happy that I saw it before 9/11. On the return from EWR I manage to get upgraded on the SAS flight thanks to fellow Flyertalker Austman.

April
Another month where I didn’t travel so much. One roundtrip to Stockholm to watch the first game in the Swedish Soccer League. The game was between Hammarby and Sundsvall, Hammarby won with 1-0 and later they won the Swedish Championships for the very first time.

May
Another trip to MMX to visit my sister and one trip to Stockholm made the total of the month to 6 segments.

June
In late June I travelled to Milan for the 2nd time in my life. I flew down to Italy with a friend from work and stayed at the Radisson SAS Hotel for two nights. I arrived on Linate, the airport where SK685 (I was on SK686 in June) a few months later so sadly crashed with a German Cessna.

July
Time for my 2nd intercont trip. For the 2nd year in a row I took my sister and father to the US for some travel. We flew into ORD with SAS of course and then picked up the famous Route66 and we drove all the way to SAN where we left our car and flew home again.

August
My third and last intercont trip for the year. In early august I flew to YYC to visit a friend, of course I took Air Canada from London on the way there. This was my 2nd time in Calgary and it’s a town I really enjoy. I will be back here in 2002 that’s for sure. On the return I had some problem and was eventually 24 hours late to my hometown. From London to Stockholm I was on my 2nd business segment of the year when nothing else was available J

September
One trip down to Stockholm to attend a small FT dinner with Austman and Sarecca who was in town for a holiday. Sarecca is from California.

October
Time for my first mileage run. One Friday in late October I flew 6 segments on SAS in one day, from hometown via Stockholm and Copenhagen to Hamburg where I spent 2 hours before I headed home. My mother still thinks I am crazy that I did that trip.

November
My 2nd small mileage run for the year. I was schedule to fly down to Stockholm to attend a hockey game but since I had a few hours over I choosed to fly roundtrip to Oslo before the game started. My friends still don’t understand this. In the middle of November I flew with SAS to Manchester to watch the big game between Sweden and England.

December
No trips at all in December L

I also travelled a total of 14 segments for work but I don’t earn any miles at all for those trips. To bad because that would be another 7K+miles.

So tell me about your travel year.

OK, I'll add mine.....

Total segments: 106 paid (all domestic, all but one on UA), plus 3 segments on a UA award tix to OAK-LAX-HNL-SFO

Segments actually flown vs. segments credited later by UA because of misconnects, bumps, cancels, etc: 99 vs. 6

Number of VDB's: 2

Premier status for 2002 achieved on March 30; for PremierExec on September 2; for 1K on November 27

Number of "pure" mileage runs: 2 (totaling 14 segments)

Favorite Red Carpet Club: HNL or SNA
Favorite flight for scenery -- SJC to SBA

January

OAK-LAX-BFL and then two days later BFL-LAX-SNA-LAX-OAK for meetings. Upgraded FC on the 2 Shuttle segments. Joined the RCC at the SNA one and have never regretted it.

Belated anniversary trip on an award ticket, OAK-LAX-HNL, and return 5 days later HNL-SFO.

February

SFO-EUG-PDX-SEA (on the segment quest already!) for a meeting (stayed at the nicest Best Western, by far, I've ever been in -- Federal Way, WA), and then returned SEA-PDX two days later. Upgraded FC on the 2 Shuttle segments.

OAK-DEN-ATL for a meeting, and then 3 days later return (more segments!) ATL-ORD-DEN-SNA-LAX-OAK. All non-UA Express flights in upgraded FC. Report at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum81/HTML/001564.html

March

A quick overnight trip OAK-DEN-STL and return STL-DEN-OAK (although this was the first of those "credited" segments, since I'd actually ticketed STL-ORD-DEN-OAK for the return but due to UA misconnect on the originating STL-ORD flight they re-routed me more directly. Wrote Mileage Plus and got the originally booked segments/miles). All but STL-DEN on upgraded FC.

SFO-ACV one night and return after meeting ACV-SFO the next day. My first experience of the funky ACV airport, a great Holiday Inn Express adajcent ACV, and the havoc a fog-induced ground-stop in SFO can wreak on the whole system on the return.

For another one day meeting OAK-LAX-SNA and return SNA-LAX-OAK. Upgraded FC on the 2 Shuttle segments. Had to hassle Mileage Plus for one of the segments; details at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/005890.html

Another work-related trip to St. Louis OAK-DEN-STL (first segment upgrade didn't clear http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif and didn't request one for second segment.

April

The return of the previous trip, STL-ORD-DEN-OAK; all upgraded FC http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Report at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum81/HTML/001673.html

Meetings in beautiful Indianapolis: OAK-DEN-IND and return a few days later IND-DEN-LAX-OAK. All segments upgraded FC

May

None!

June

A pleasure trip OAK-DEN-MCI (upgraded FC on second segment); then 3 days later MCI-STL (on TWA; my only non-UA flight this year -- and TWA had sent me a cert for a confirmed FC upgrade to get my business back. Didn't work, but I still got the upgrade) and onward STL-ORD-IND (both upgraded FC). Returned from the trip 3 days later IND-DEN-OAK; first segment upgraded FC.

July

Pleasure trip for wife and I to San Diego over the Fourth; OAK-LAX-SAN and return three days later SAN-LAX-OAK. The Shuttle segment upgrades for both of us came through http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Highly recommend the Hilton on Harbor Island!

Back to MCI, this time for work. A purely awful day on UA outbound OAK-DEN-MCI (see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/007148.html ) and return 5 days later MCI-DEN-OAK.

August

SFO-PHX for work (upgrade didn't clear and middle seat was filled by a very large guy!); next day PHX-SFO-ACV in upgraded FC PHX-SFO (for another overnight and then meeting -- boy did ACV feel good after Phoenix!); and the third day ACV-SFO

Last day of August flew OAK-ORD-BMI for business; both the non-United Express segments in upgraded FC.

September

Return two days later from previous trip. An odd experience of flying on a "cancelled" flight (see http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/007711.html ) on the first segment, BMI-ORD; then ORD-DEN-OAK, both segments in upgraded FC

Another quickie for work to St. Louis: OAK-DEN-STL and STL-DEN-OAK. All in upgraded FC

My first post-9/11 flight was actually SMF-SFO-ONT due to UA cancellations (although it had been booked -- for the segments, of course!) SMF-SFO-SBA-LAX-ONT. Returned the next day ONT-SFO-SMF (although, again, had originally booked ONT-LAX-SBA-SFO-SMF). Mileage Plus credited the originally booked itinerary after an email. Some reflections on this trip at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/007920.html

Another Orange County and Bakersfield trip: Outbound OAK-LAX-SNA and two days later SNA-LAX-BFL-LAX-OAK. Both Shuttle segments upgraded FC.

October

A pure mileage/segment run: Outbound SMF-SFO-LAX-SNA (although had actually booked SMF-SFO-SBA-LAX-SNA, but due to UA-caused misconnect omitted the SBA leg; Mileage Plus credited the segment after an email). Spent an hour at SNA and returned SNA-LAX-SBA-SFO-SMF. Both Shuttle legs upgraded FC (my last Shuttle flights!) and my first time at SBA (a lovely airport -- just don't try to eat supper after 6pm there!). Trip report at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum81/HTML/002237.html

November

For business, flew OAK-LAX-ORD-STL (had originally booked OAK-LAX-PHX-DEN-STL, but accepted a bump for the LAX-PHX segment which was later credited by MP and got me my first experience in C class LAX-ORD http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif ) More comments at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/008765.html Returned two days later STL-ORD-DEN-OAK (but no upgrades cleared).

Another "pure" mileage/segment run, SJC-SBA-LAX-ONT (and overnight at the very nice ONT Hilton) and return the following day ONT-LAX-SBA-SJC. Trip report at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum81/HTML/002285.html

End of the month, on business to New Orleans; OAK-DEN-MSY (the first was the segment that made 1K! -- reflections at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum50/HTML/009199.html ). Both upgrades cleared.

December

Return from New Orleans trip, MSY-DEN-OAK. First segment cleared upgrade; second didn't.

And finally, an anniversary trip for my wife and I, SFO-RNO and back a couple of days later, RNO-SFO (yes we could have driven, but it added to the fun to start out the trip in upgraded FC and it was her last segment to make Premier)

A depressing year after two years of flying over 100+ flights a year and qualifying for top tier with USAirways.

JAN: A couple of quick hops to LGA, split between AirTran and USAirways.

FEB: Visit Myrtle Beach. Going here in early February is a big mistake.. what a waste.

MAR: Two more quick hops to LGA, again split.

APR: I've really gone far this month -- went to Atlanta.. Sigh.

MAY: A big month -- visited two cities .. and you guessed one of them .. LGA. Also Houston for an extended weekend.

JUN: My biggest mileage earning trip of the year -- to Phoenix, Arizona. Enjoyed the great deals and the 'dry heat'.

JUL: Visited my other relatives in Texas in Dallas. Again, too hot, but great deals!

AUG: Visited Lexington, KY. I don't really know why, but I did.

SEP: Philadelphia before the world changed...

OCT: No surprise here, but back to Atlanta and New York...

NOV: Award travel to Hawaii. Very nice.

DEC: No flying, just driving around the Northeast.

All in all, I barely qualified for Silver Preferred with USAirways (a few short biz trips here and there put me over the top) and have not flown mileage earning flights on any other airline. Next year's prognosis look's grim too .. !%$#@%$# recession!

100 segments on UAL

53K (paid) miles

46 (paid) nights at Starwood.

Jan - March. Standard West Coast trips on UA Shuttle. Hotels were plain - booked by comapany travel agent.

April - discovered flyer talk http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Gold Hilton through a 'match me' offer.
Starwood gold through amex.

May - Aug. Many trips up and down the pacific coast.
W San Francisco - gorgeous.
Westin St Francis San Francisco - book the cheapest room if you get upgrades. You won't get a suite, but, you will get a room in the new tower.
The Palace - very charming. around the corner from the W. I really need high speed internet so the W is still my choice in the city.
W Newark, CA - probably 20 nights. great hotel and especially for the price. Good if I don't have time for the nightlife available in the city.

Sept - stuck at the 4 Points in Pleasanton from the 10th through the 13th. I can't complain since I'm alive - but - this place is a dump.

Oct - Dec.
Same hotels and routes as above with the exception of Starwood properties in Portland and Seattle.

Westin Portland - very nice. Downtown. Be sure to take a walk down the street to Jake's for dinner or drinks and apps.

Seattle Westin, nice for this type of hotel. Better than the Boneventure in LA.

<WHEW!>

My Boss kept asking if I was planning to WORK at all this year. I wonder why?

Well, I may have not flown over 100,000 miles, like most of you, but here's my year in review. :-)

On all airlines, I flew over 56,300 miles.
Flew about 53360 miles on UA
Flew about 2940 miles on AA
All miles were revenue, and often upgraded with upgrade certs or miles. All flights reported here were on UA unless otherwise indicated.

January, 2001
Flew home from CLT after celebrating with a friend there.

Feburary, 2001
Did a sort-of mileage run to LHR (stayed 2 nights in London)

March, 2001
No flights flown

April, 2001
Flew to BWI/DCA two times this month to visit friends and family.

May, 2001
Did a mileage run to HKG (well my original plan was to go to SIN, but got sick after arriving in HKG from ORD and spent the night in HKG).

June, 2001
Flew again to DCA for family occasion.

July, 2001,
No flights flown.

August, 2001
Flew to Allentown (ABE) to visit friends.

September, 2001
Flew to BWI to visit my family and got very sick while in town, so spent the rest of the month at home.

October, 2001
Flew back to AUS from home, nonstop from IAD.

November, 2001
Flew to SJC for work on AA.
Flew home (DCA) and back for Thanksgiving.

December, 2001
Again flew home (IAD/DCA) and back.

Next year....I have a mileage run to SIN (and this time I'm going to get all the way to SIN http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif ) plus a little run to LHR in a couple of weeks (but might cancel it, see below). There's a chance I may be flying between AUS and SJC for a couple of months for work and will try to fly UA whenever possible, but may have to fly AA even through UA is a preferred airline at my company. If I can get to fly UA, I may cancel my run to LHR and use the money for a future mileage run to SIN or LHR.

Also I'll be flying to LHR and HKG in XF (so my first non-rev!) in 2nd half of January...

All travel is leisure or for my advocation (soccer referee) Not one mile for work!

Total miles 88k on nw - as - aa - sn - oa
Segments ? don't matter - don't count them January - Resting
February - Jerrie and I take a long weekend to ams. Just before leaving see that Belle3388 is in a quandry of visiting her family at sjc or going to ams. Send her an email before heading to the airport and next thing I hear from her is a letter under our hotel room door that she is in ams also.
March - CatmanDOIII and the dhammer Brooklyn Reality Tour™ (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum81/HTML/001664.html)
April - Resting
May - Attend the a soccer tournament in Northern Virgina which gets rained out for the most part and end up only officiating two matches. Do not know what I was resting for in April
June/July - Fly to cak and pick up niece for trip to Greece (Rodos) and London. Meet Jerrie in dtw and we continue together. Highlight is flight on oa 737 where magic happens on the flight deck (http://www.moremiles.org/cgi-bin/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic&f=7&t=000023) and is allowed to fly over the agean like pegasus or maybe icarus.
July - Annual sojurn to USA Cup in Minnesota.
August - It is Jerrie's bday and we head for Las Vegas and this year it is "O"
September - Resting
October - Off to England where I attend a friend's wedding in Liverpool.
October - S.T.I.F.F.S
November - SEA DO III
November - A Taste of Zürich (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/Forum81/HTML/002329.html)
December - Sunbowl in tpa
Since a large part of my travels seem to include FT events and members my total mileage was enough to raise my elite status with nw to Platinum.

Lots of flying by my standards, though very little compared to many of you. All leisure http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif and at my own expense http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

36 segments:
United: 11 (2 in J; 9 in Y)
Air New Zealand: 10 (1 in J; 9 in Y)
Qantas: 5 (1 in J - nonrev; 4 in Y)
Austrian: 4 (all in Y)
Scandinavian: 2 (both in Y)
Singapore Airlines: 2 (both in Y)
Thai: 2 (both in Y)

Total rev miles 51,504:
UA: 33,653 (plus 10,675 on SQ not credited)
NZ: 6,012 (kms not miles)
QF: 3,440

No. of airports: 19
No. of continents: 5

Highlights:
- Discovering Flyertalk
- 2nd and 3rd operational upgrades of my life (on UA, within 2 days of each other)
- Sampling AirNZ J-class
- Travelling to so many great places
- Getting Premier status on United!!! (thank you for your rapturous applause)
- Pucci Galore

Lowlights:
- Arriving in Cairo at 4am with no luggage thanks to OS
- The demise of Ansett, leaving us to suffer at the hands of Qantas
- Sept 11
- Missing out on approximately 20,000 UA miles thanks to M+ giving incorrect information about earning miles on SQ

Who knows what 2002 will bring?

YTD United revenue miles: 54,000
YTD United Miles awarded: 145,257
# of segments: 53
--------------------------
Airplanes hit: 72S, 733, 735, 744, 757, 763 2 cabin, 763 3 cabin, 777 3 cabin, BE1, EM2, D38, CRJ. (764, M90, L10 on DL; 73G and CRJ on JI; 757,320,SF3 on NW; 73G & 733 on WN, 738 and 753 on ATA)

Cities hit: ORD, FLL, MIA, PBI, EWR, LGA, IAD, DEN, LAS, LAX, SEA, SFO, BMI, SPI, MEM, BOS, RDU, PHL, RNO, DFW, SNA, PDX, MDW, MCO

Red Carpet Clubs I've slept in: LAX, SFO, ORD (all 3), IAD (C17?), LGA, and MIA.

Most frequent seat: 4C on UA 757
Favorite Seat: 3A on a 777 3 Cabin
Most frequent type: 757
Most frequent route: FLL-ORD-FLL
Longest segment: UA LAX-IAD
Shortest segment: UA ORD-BMI
Most frequent meal: **** Meatloaf or Salmon Choice
Most frequent movie: America's Sweethearts
Most frequent flight attendant: Jay, an ORD based FA... light puerto rican skin, 26-28 age range... i hope he wasn't laid off... had him on 3 flights
Best memory: after the 11th, FLL only had 1 flight for a while, so all of us transients from ILL commuted on the same flight.. i met so many awesome people and ended up sitting next to the same person *3* times... the last flight, the FA remember us from the prior flights (we seemed to fly out on wednesdays), so she was like "HOLY SHIIIITTT" when we got on, captain wondered why she said that, pointed to us, captain lauged,(as he remembers us too) and called us "oh, it's the barachos again?" During preflight departure drink, she just handed us a carton of OJ and a bottle of champagne, said not to waste her time anymore with refills... Nothin like partying in a 757 at 37,000 feet huh?

Best hub gate agents: Imelda L., Melvin G., and Caroline (night shift low C gates) at ORD
Best spoke agents: FLL - Rhonda (actually everyone there is wonderful)
Best res agent: DENRR Kim Keith
Administration: Trudy Goodwin, MCOVZ, now retired

Biggest problems this year: United lost one of my bags on the last leg of a trip. Came to my door less than 10 hours later the next morning. Also was flying BOS-ORD-MIA on the last few segments of a mileage run from florida to boston to dallas, flight was delayed in getting cleaned, so I lost my business class seats on the 767-300 to ORD and the 777 to MIA and was put on AA BOS - MIA on an AB3...

Modest compared to some, but I moved up from United 2P to 1P, especially post 9/11! Speaking of the latter date, we learned of the attack while on a 3-day rail excursion in central British Columbia. The rail trip proceeded, but our internal Canadian flight on WestJet the next morning was cancelled. We ended up taking a charter bus all day back to Vancouver, and staying as per previous plans at the Vancouver Airport Fairmont, a great hotel which had views of stranded airliners from all over the world, even blocking the runways.

I had a very circuitous trip back to SFO, via bus to Seattle, train to PDX (fine views of Rainier and Puget Sound), a night with a friend, then UA to LAX and back up to SFO because no direct flights.

Early part of 2001 featured a January RT from SFO to ORD and a frigid tour of Wright houses in Oak Park, followed by a longer trip to AKL for a family visit in New Zealand. Then in September, the above Canadian trip, followed by a whirlwind of trips to PVD, JAX, and SIN after latching onto Flyertalk, the last 3 costing around $875 and yielding a $600 bump voucher! Result: 50,376 miles for the year, at minimal net cost. What a deal.

Best wishes for the New Year to all fellow FTers!

All I can say is that despite much less travel, I happily ended up a 1K for 2002, a NW Silver, and an AA Gold. So I can get low fares and be an elite when it counts more and more (because of elite security lines, longer waits at airports, etc.)

But the highlight of the year was a family vacation in Oaxaca, Mexico.

From Jan to June (pre FT). I flew mostly UA/other airlines on mid cons, priceline, & other trips looking mainly at price. Only bright spot in this was going on a priceline ticket in April LAX-PHX for $47 total & getting a $600 UA bump. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif (4 times $150 vouchers).Used vouchers for more mileage earning trips! Discovered FT in late May 2001 & over time, got more focused & wise about status, flying, miles, & doing quaisi mileage runs. (I will fly runs if I spend some time at the place I'm flying to) Had no status on any airline with exception of US Silver for taking $600 bump in June 2000.

June 2001:
SAN-LGW paid $355 total on US. Got confirm upgrade on return & was able to upgrade PHL-LGW at gate. LGW agent didn't collect SWU. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif! Thanks to FT, signed up for gold challenge, bonus miles, & double status miles. Booked another trip LAX-RDU for $192 to make sure I would make gold by challenge. Took a bump & got free ticket on the PHL-RDU leg. Went to Kitty Hawk. (that trip got me double status miles, too. ). Got 2 silver kits earlier & now 1 Gold kit. Had 5 SWU's left. Can't let them SWU's go to waste, can we? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif If work was not so busy, I would have gone to London at that cheap fare more than once! While still unfocused, booked 3 tickets on various carriers. (all sub $100 bucks for mid-con or transcons!). Went LAX-MIA on CO. Got 2 times $300 (total $600) bumps & an op FC on outbound. Paid $86 for SNA-DFW on NW for Sept. travel. Paid $51 for SNA-DTW on UA. (got double miles on this one)

July-Sept 2001: Flew Midwest Express LAX-ATL for labor day & DL LAX-MKE in later Sept. (had to do something to keep my 128K DL miles alive for 3 mores years & did so for $125!). Did one smart thing that time & asked UA to comp me on my US gold. Got my PremEx comp 2 weeks later. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Went to FT events in San Diego & San Francisco. Had lots of fun meeting other FTers.

October 2001:

Flew my $51 SNA-DTW on UA. (to see family). Called Prem Ex. got E+ seating & double miles! Booked sister & I on LAX-AMS ticket on US. Register myself & sister for various bonus codes posted on FT. Sister got almost 71K miles http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif (she has never flown US before) & I got 83K with Gold. Was able to upgrade outbound using systemwides for both of us. (she got to use her miles for 2 off peak award tix to FL & have enough for 2 off peak award tix to LAX). We paid $626 each for the LAX-AMS tix.

Nov. 2001/Dec. 2001

Booked LAX-CDG for Thanksgiving weekend. (11/21-11/25) on US. Got confirmed upgrades when ticket was bought in August. Also booked LAX-PVD. Oversold LAX-PIT flight. The GA put me on LAX-BWI flight. Asked & received BWI-BOS when they could use my seat. Add this to my free ticket pile. (should have asked for $200 voucher, but oh well, didn't know!). Saw on FT that Chairman's requirements were reduced to 80K status miles. Had 68K. What the heck, I will do another trip to Europe! When do I have the time? Made the time. Went Dec 6-9, using only 1 day of vacation. Flight put me at 80,403 miles, made Chairman's Preferred on US. Flew LAX-MBS (for once, going to MBS is cheaper than going to Europe from the west coast!) for $246 total. Flew out red eye on Dec 19, oversold flight & needed lots of volunteers. Volunteered, put on flight 2 days later. Was offered 9 hrs. OT at 1.5X pay to work next day. (to fund more trips! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif) Free ticket was icing on the cake! Got comped to FC & traveled on the day I originally wanted to anyway! Earned over 300K miles on US!

Prospects for 2002:

1. Take SIN trips. (just got back from my first one! Can't wait to go next month!) Loads of miles at cheap price.
2. Take some more Europe trips.
3. Book Business class award trips to Australia. (already done so on QF using some of my US miles I'd earned in 2001 http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif)
4. As much travel as my budget & time allows. (I travel all leisure).
5. Become more travel wise & know all the 'angles' to max out mileage earning!

Edited for clarity & to correct mistakes.
