For the first time, I bought a pair of tickets because they were cheap, dirt cheap and went for it. Took an evening flight on friday from ALB to return on sunday.
Fri ALB - bright and sunny weather. Wife hated to leave the place and fly across the country. Wanted to cancel the trip several time in the last two weeks and enjoy the beautiful spring in the northeast. Flight was late 30 minutes pushing back due to ATC delay at CVG. Pilot announcing that we will be 45 min late as he will go on a slow taxi before getting clearance. As usual, I doze off during taxi. After what seemed like an hour, I wake up to a nudge from my wife as the pilot announced that we will turn back to the gate as we won't be cleared until 7:40 PM (2 hr delay).
(wife makes another attempt to cancel the tickets - I manage to hold steady). Take off at 7:50PM and reach CVG at 9:50PM. SJC connection has long departed and they reroute us to SFO leaving at 11PM. No meal vouchers http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
CVG shuts down at 10:00PM. No food. Decide to share a cold cheese pizza (last one). While I call Hertz to change reservation, manage only one bite out of wife's hand. End up paying $12 more for changing the airport to rent the car http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mad.gif as coupon not valid.
Leave CVG at 11:10 or so (never on time) and catch Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in parts (Delta gave free headsets) as I left the chicken and ate the rest of my relatively cold meal. Get a few hours of sleep before we reach SFO at 12:50AM. Cold as we wait for the rental car bus for 10 minutes. Wife thrilled to see a yellow Ford Escape while I feel that all I need is a TAXI sign to join my Yellow Cab friends ;-)
Return flight was uneventful but I like the 737-800 (or was it 600) aircraft from SJC-CVG. Looked new as mint and real nice - no rickety overhead bin lids, torn seats and the usual delta fare. Only 8 of the 16 first class seats occupied. Cursed my L class fare for being seated behind the wall (curvy!). Used 2000 coupons for headsets and got chastised by the FA who finally accepted them (the check-in agent said that there should be no problems...). Wife didn't like the pipes as headsets and I enjoy the movie.
Back home on time and checked my delta account online.
15840 miles of which 10560 count towards medallion status (due to the double miles promo) - all for $78.50!! (approx .5c per mile) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cool.gif
