SQ 146Y SIN-DPS (Denpasar, Bali) - Seat 34A
This flight departs at 1400, and is operated by a B777-200 Jubilee aircraft. The plane has 3 classes of service, with F having the sleeper seats (not the SkySuites). Raffles Class has the electric operated seats, but I could not verify if they were the Ultimo model seats that SQ offers in its Megatop 744s. Economy class has the redesigned Y seats, with the individual monitors and the expanded Krisworld entertainment system (audio, video, and games). Legroom seemed quite decent, although I don't have the exact specs it was not that uncomfortable (although it doesn't have the space UA gives you in Economy plus) - and I had a little girl in the seat in front of me that didn't recline her seat so I was perhaps misled. The Nintendo system games have been updated and expanded over the last couple of months.
Boarding was done using two doors, the first to F and J, the second for the main cabin. I boarded rather late, being among the last 10 pax to board. I noticed the cabin was decorated with Xmas motives. This was a full flight, and I was a little concerned the gate agents would not let me by with my two carry-ons, but those worries proved baseless. Soon after I settled down in 34A, the FA's came around to distribute the classic SQ hot towel. These are great, huge and really think, and steaming hot. This is really a nice detail that SQ has, and I wish the western carriers would emulate this custom. As far as I can tell, SQ uses the same towels for Y/J/F, perhaps with the only difference that in coach they come around only once, and in the front are available multiple times during a long-haul flight.
Still before take-off, a welcome drink cart was passed through the aisles (yes, in the Economy cabin). The choices were wine (red/white), Orange Juice, and Champagne. I was very surprised to find the FA address me by my name when offering me a drink. I guess SQ tries to keep it personal with its PPS members, even when they fly in the back of the bus…. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif In any event, I tried the Champagne, which was surprisingly good. I found this stuff (Duval-Leroy Brut) a lot better than the concoction UA served in Business Class. The last FA run through the aisles before the doors closed was to distribute the headsets.
As we took-off, I reviewed the SQ magazines. You can really tell how much of a world-carrier SQ is by eyeing its publications. Whilst its magazine is comparable in size to UA's Hemisphere (although not as filled with ads), it's a lot more dedicated to travel and SQ served destinations. Also, its Duty Free magazine is far superior. SQ's shopping magazine has over 100 pages, and the variety of articles is amazing. Also, I did notice a large and comprehensive brochure on 'cabin PE' (ie. exercise for safer & more comfortable flying) - all related to the DVT issues.
No menus were provided (after all, this is only a 2-hour flight). Choices were Chicken with potato and vegetables, or Fish with rice & Chinese vegetables. I chose the Chicken, which came with sweet corn, carrots and mashed potatoes. It was very tasty, the chicken breast was tender & cooked just right. A warm roll, butter, and a mixed salad with a creamy Italian dressing were also offered. Dessert was some sort of tapioca pudding, which I skipped.
Service was very good. FA's always smiling, very accommodating and attentive. I confess I don't have much experience on SQ's Y cabin, but overall I was very impressed. I can't help but think that SQ is definitely a guy's airline… I really don't know of any woman that is a fan of SQ. I have a theory about this and will post a separate thread in the SQ forum. In any event, this was a great flight. I don't know if such a short flight is an indication of what long-haul Y on SQ is like, but if its anything like this flight then it is light years ahead of what's regularly reported on these boards of other carriers.
