One of my best F-T buds newself Wanted to celebrate my birthday early so California here I come again! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

An Angel is Watching over me

Got to EWR three hours early because I had something from Santa Claws to give some angels at the RCC (more on that in a moment.) Glad I did because after a 30 sec check-in I endured a 35 minute wait on the long and winding security line at the UA gates. One of the angels (I don't like to give names) and I were talking about travel and getting holiday gifts past security (use Nordstrom boxes, the best, don't need wrapping) and other stuff. The angel gets called over by the supervisor.

Confession here: Tried to get on with a rollaway, shopping bag and a little strap thing around my shoulder. Big no no but I figured no one would notice.

Supervisor did. He said to the angel that I had to check one of my bags. I was just near the gate but the angel (who saved me in the past) did it again: telling me to squeeze the carry thing in my rollaway bag. It worked and the guy checking tickets offered to sit on the bag to close it if it didn't.

Notice several people arriving with 20 minutes to their flights and needing to go to the front of the x-ray line. Some people (on my LA flight with 2.5 hours before takeoff) whining about that. I let sevearl go ahead. WHat's the big deal: your only options at the UA gate are the very nice RCC or the dreaded TGI Fridays.

A Delivery of Cats

Got into the RCC and was greeted by Gus who I prompted presented with Tescheur's (SP) chocolates.

Chocolate cats of course.

He was shocked saying very few people give anything. I told him to give to all the angels at the desk adn save some for the other crews. Lynn came in and was shocked by Chocolate covered cats. They thanked me profusely and asked if I wanted anything. I said "just enjoy the cats."

I gave a second box to Maria the angel of beer at teh bar and she shared it with LUZ and Sophia. Maria in particular loves chocolate. They were in heaven but I sensed a few passengers there felt guilty about not giving anything.

Maria insisted on me having one and I did. It's heavenly no calorie chocolate. THe best!

You know You need more sleep when...

Wanted to get something on my stomach so stopped at TGI Friday's. Bonnie the bartender was working alone (she says it's typical on weekends) and tried to manage a bunch of somewhat crabby delayed Air Tran FLyers (and a few who had too much holiday cheer in them!) Ordered my buffalo wings and a beer and gave her this e-mail I got for 800 Goldpoints. She happily processed it (tried it recently at the outside securiyt TGI Fridays and the bartender whined about doing some extra work.)

Off the plane, quick boarding and on time takeoff. Once the seatbelt sign went off went to use the lavatory.

Then one of my most embarssing incidents happened...

Fell asleep in the bathroom!

I did not realize it until one of the FA angels knocked on the door and said "Mr. Blanchard, are you ok?"

Bolted up, got back to my seat embarassed and apologized to the FA's. THe one angel said "You know you need more sleep when this happens."

Well i did have like 2 Sam Adams between the RCC and the TGI Fridays. That could have knocked me out.

I slept most of the flight. Well going on 2 to 3 hours of sleep a night for the past week (not counting pain pills) it catches up to ya.

A Warm So Cal Welcome from my Bodyguard

The plane was 25 minutes late (I can hear newself and mileCrazy say "Continental would be EARLY!") With no bags checked got to the luggage area where the goateed and smiling face of Newself patiently awaited. It was good to be back with my good buddy and bodyguard as I call him (some know the story of why. Wont' do here.)

Always wanted to go to the Fishtail, one of Newself's favorite hangouts. We got there and I enjoyed a scooner of Newcastle (My Flyertalk buds are trying to expand my beer horizons.) Brother and philsopher Jailer joined us to catch up on stuff and flying and life in general.

The Fishtail "docked" for the night (closing time) at 11pm so we could say we closed one of Long Beach's most happening places. Jailer called it a night but promised to hook up withme somewhere next year.

Newself was hungry so as is becoming a tradition we headed over to In and Out Burger. He did the double double and I did teh regular. It's one of the few fast food places I would good and it with the fries and shake was a welcome late night snack.

In and Out: Official West Coast Fast food joint for Flyertalkers.

Feeling good and stuffed and ready for double snoring miles we called it a night.

Breakfast Babes

Before goign on to breakfast, just a quick note that the Westin Long Beach upon check=in (my official residence in Long Beach) did offer the Platinum ammenity on check-in. THanks William for the great training!

Newself got me and we headed over to one of the best breakfast places ever: Babes (Thought I was talking about somethign R Rated, eh?)

It's a small restaurant aroudn Long Beach with teh nicest servers like Ona and terrific company. Newself goes there a lot and I was glad he introduced me to it a year ago.

Big, generous, and for some critics non nutritionally correct foods. I had the sunnyside up eggs, perfectly flat crispy bacon (the owner and chef cooks bacon with flatirons) and awesoem homemade bread with preserves made by Ona herself. I am not a breakfast person (I can barely get up at 1 on the morning for work) but this is worth getting up early for. If only for the welcoming service and sharing a cup of coffee with newself.

And they have PEPSI too. Which newself teased me about.

An Old Tradition Renewed

Newself convinced me very easily months ago to go to Santa Maria and this great Ribs place called Jockos for my birthday celebration. (It took like 3 secs to convince me) So it was time to fly United to get to the town.

As we passed the endless security line at Terminal 1 (southwest, American West and US Airways) I told newself that now I know the news media exaggerates teh security lines sometimes: they all shoot that ONE LINE at LAX!

I had problems checking in becuase I could not use the Easy ticket machine and get my 500 miles. Newself with no status zipped thru easily.

After an agent nearby got me a ticket and waited the long line of security (soem sections were worse than others) we renewed our LAX Tradition of going to the President's Club to enjoy a Sam Adams (well Dave had a Becks) and talk of the good old days when he and Mr. Limo could get through security, meet my plane and welcome me with drinks.

Miss those days. Hope they can ease security just a bit so we can do that great tradition again. Those moments mean more than some upgrade.

United, Junior

We took the bus to the SkyWest/United express prop plane flight and even though we were early since everyone checked in on time the pilot decided to elave early.

The plane's an old Brasilla prop plane. I had exit row and was asked if I could handle it. The plane was probalby older than newself but in good condition.

Flight was fast. Like 35 minutes over soem of the most beautiful SO Cal beachfronts and mountainous scenery where grapes become wine I ever seen. The Perfectly clear day just added to a picture worthy trip. Normally I bring clouds and rain to So Cal. It was nice to have springtime for a change.

The FA was friendly enough but because of turbulance our service was bottled water and soem of the most unusual snacks I seen: Like Powerbars adn healthy bars. I settled for the Santa Claus shaped Biscoti cookies.

We got in a little early to a small airport that looked something out of a 19-40's movie (Or the airport at Key West.) Nice building though and we were greeted by a security person at the door.

Tish and Margaritas

MileCrazy decided to join us so he could celebrate my birthday. (Since I could not make his SFO football thing with the great Rudi just before Christmas.) He was not waiting for us outside the gate so we hoped he was ok.

After I went to use the restroom came out and found newself and the bags gone. Could I have been abandoned at Santa Maria? NAH.

Heard MileCrazy yell from a downstairs bar in this mexican restaurant bar at the airport called "Pepper Santas (not the real name but remember the Pepper part!)

MileCrazy was enjoying a margarita. We joined in and Tish the bar manager (who like Bonnie had to tend as well as manager)
Tish makes some of the best margaritas around (on par with the Crown Room at MSY) and she made us feel welcome as I revealed my embarassing moment on the UA flight over, and the fact I did not have a coffee maker. But Tish said they are true buddies

I teased MileCrazy about being weeks away from winning several bets of steak dinner from him. One that I am watching is for my Jaqs to finish better in the season than his Saints (although so far he has the edge http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif )

Happy from a margarita we headed to our hotel.

No Heat, No Worries

The desk person at the Regency Santa Maria (a former Hilton) apologized that their heater was out so they knocked about half off the room rates. Nice surprise and unexpected.

The Regency was within Walking (or staggering if you were coming from Pepper Santas) from the airport. It looked like it was designed like an embassy suites, but was in the midst of remodeling (It was to become a Radisson in early 2002.)

After dropping the stuff off headed out to enjoy a night on the town in Santa Maria.

A Carnavours Heaven

Newself has been to Jocko's before and we go there early to get a good table. The place is hard to find becuase it does not advertise or have loud signs around.

JOCKOS stands for:

Jenuine (for genuine)
Oak
Coal
Kooks
Our
Steaks

It does not need to advertise. As you drive in the smell of barbeque hyponotises you and lures you into the small restaurant. We were greated by a beautiful so Cal woman I named "miss Christmas Tree" (for the Christmas tree hat on her head.) Her real name is Jeri and I sensed we three boys were goign to fight for her attention. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Jeri sat us next to the big window where the various meats were grilled to perfection. The smell was intoxicating and it was fun to see the "grill artists" at work getting the meats made to our perfection.

Our resident JOcko's expert newself (who like us had salavating mouths) suggested being three dudes we order their three best dishes and share:

Newself went with the BBQ Ribs
MileCrazy went with the Pork Chops (as large as the state of Minnesota!
I went with the usual New YOrk Strip MEDIUM (Not MEDIUM Well, I wanted to taste the meat!)

YOu thought the Meat was enough

Newself suggested we start with the very tasty and well grilled Lingusa (Portuguese sausage.) It's a great way to kick off an endless feast of meat.

Salad was included but we ate just enough as the meat was slowly grilled for our featings.

Between the salads (included) and the gigantic steak (the size of New York) and the endless ribs and very thick pork chops we had enough food for two or three days.

We split the meats and felt like we were in a carnavours heaven. The flavor of the pit and the sauces and the fresh Santa Maria air made for steak and ribs and pork chops that would top some fo the best steak places and restaurants in the country. The meat melted in your mouth and the taste lingered like a fine wine. The Ribs were bone tickling tender and tasty and I dont' do pork chops but these were white and tender and just juicy enough.

A big platter of homecut french fries and baked potato (that MileCrazy devoured) and othe rchoices made for the perfect birthday meal.

We were so stuffed but managed to make room for ice cream and a picture with Miss Christmas tree before throwing in the towel.

WIth several courses and desert and entertainment from the BBQ Grillers, the price for three was around 80 bucks! (A steak in NYC at a godo place goes for 30-40.)

Brothers Newself and MileCrazy can probably better describe this better but I say If you want to feast on barbeque or beef or pork you can get it here with great service at a great price

One of the best birthday feasts ever! Thanks boys!

JOCKOS: EIGHT PAWS UP AND AMONG MY NEW TOP TEN DINING PLACES! ALONG WITH BABES!

When are we going again brothers?

Ketel One

Santa Maria shuts down for the night early as we discovered. Tish was working upstairs at Pepper Santas so we headed over to the hotel bar where I tried a Ketel one. (It's some schandanaviel vodka.) first ordered it with tonic, but newself said that was wrong. Drank it and then had a second one straight which went down nice.

We asked for nightlife, maybe a game of pool as well, so we headed out to find it.

After passing two palces and having a beer in another we found a non describe but loud place (can't think of the name.) It had a pool table which MileCrazy or FlyerSlim (as I call him) wanted. The place had karocki night and even I did not want to attempt to sing (although I know my buddies, my pals and my chums Newself and MileCrazy wanted me to http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif )

No competition for Sting here, or even the "Jingle Cats."

We played a round of pool. My game with MileCrazy lasted 2 minutes when on my first good shot I knocked in -- the eight ball http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Newself and MileCrazy had a godo roudn but FlyerSlim came out victorious.

We headed back to the hotel for one more round of Ketel and water for newself and then went off to a snoring mileage run. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

OK, let me see if I can clean this report up a bit. It was of course great to see the CatDude again. It was also great to see my drinking buddy MileCrazy again also. Ok, enough of that crap, on to the FOOD!

Babe's
Babe's has been around for 25 years now in Signal Hill, CA. 'The' Greasy Spoon! 3 large eggs, thick slice bacon or thick country sausage patty, large serving of fresh cut hash browns, sausage gravy on the pots, homemade toast cut 2 inches thick, dipped in butter, and fried on the grill, then you get Ona's homemade jams. She only makes around 10 different flavors each week. If your cholrestrol is too low, then you need to make a Babe's run! Jailer has his own place that he likes to go to but since he did not show for breakfast, he can write his own food report!

When we got to LAX, we parked at the Hilton and took the shuttle in. LAX is now letting cars pickup and drop of passengers so the cones have been picked up. Now the buses can take the shortcut between 6 & 7 without having to go all the way around. We get to see the infamous terminal 1 with it's mile long security line. Editor's note: they need to shoot the security people for putting 1 person at the stairway to check ID's and tickets instead of spending another $5.00 per hour for another person to help out get the paying customer's through. The line is way too long for this crap, but what can you expect, the Terminal serves WN, HP, & US.

Get dropped off at Terminal 7 (UA) and of course it is swamped with a long line up the escalator heading to security. I told the Cat to follow me and we headed for Terminal 6. The line took maybe 15 minutes and we were soon in the President's Club sucking on my favorite beer...free beer! Take the secret corridor over to gate 71D for the bus ride to the EMB120. They almost put us on the wrong plane which was going to San Luis Obispo. Get to my seat 3A which was occupied. I asked the 'gentleman' if he was in 3A which he replied "I guess so".

I let the FA know that I was going to take 4A and settled into my new seat with a few well placed knees to the back of the seat along with a few foot movements under the seat. He really didn't like the fact that my newspaper was spread over the top of his seat (my favorite trick) but since he was in the wrong, he didn't make a big deal of it. But what a beautiful day it was outside! Besides having great BBQ, Santa Maria has quite a few wineries that you need to go tasting at!

I knew that Dan MileCrazy got there ahead of us and since he wasn't at the gate to meet us and there just happened to be a bar there, I put 2 & 4 together to come up with a quess that he just be in that bar. What a surprise when Dan comes up the stairs with a surprised look on his face. Oh well, a margo down the chute, off to the hotel to check in, then over to Jocko's for din-din.

Jacko's
I cannot tell you where this place is because they don't want the advertising. Just be hungry! Large rack of pork spare ribs, dry rubbed with salt, pepper, and garlic salt. 2 huge pork chops, 3" thick and as big as your hand. 2" - 5" thick steaks, either spencer (Rib Eye), NY, or top sirloin. Plus, salad, beans and salsa, garlic toast, and ice cream. Oh yeah, I forgot the beer too!

Time to head off for a night on the town...yeah right! Pub crawling is a new thing is Santa Maria. We finally ended up at a semi dark cocktail bar with drunk cowboys dancing in the aisle and a farmer singing karoke. 3 cold ones and out of there! Back to the hotel bar for a night cap then off to the land of snooring!

Dan left early and Mark and myself had a good breakfast then walked over to the airport for the ride home. My seatmate grew up in Long Beach and is now an engineer for Boeing on the Delta Rocket program. We talked about how great Douglas Aircraft used to be (my dad retired from them) and what it was like under Boeing. We exchanged cards and promised to look each other up when we get to each other's town for dinner or drinks. Beautiful day flying into LAX. You could see Catalina and the Channel Islands. It was a shame that the flight was only 35 minutes.

We stopped back at the President's Club for a Bloody Mary then headed back to the Hilton to check in and get my car. We headed back to my apartment so that Mark could write his trip report and check out our email's and FlyerTalk (I took a nap). Then we headed off to pick up MrLimo and went on to meet PremEx for dinner. The CatCop can write about that.

UA posted the miles in 1 day! I now have a whopping 5387 miles!!!! So I promptly called the Mileage Plus customer service desk and transferred 5000 miles over to my Hilton account. Netted 10000 HH points out of that. Can't let those miles build up with since UA is going to be taken over by ... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Wow, I can't believe it - FT'ers in my old neighborhood. I was born in Santa Maria and lived there until I was 11; then my family moved to Solvang were I lived until college.

Santa Maria barbecue is the best! We always went to the Far Western in Guadalupe (tiny little town about 12 miles west of Santa Maria). Jocko's is wonderful too. I remember once when I was 12 or so; me and my three brothers were bored as our parents and their friends lingered over their coffee. We asked if we could go out and wait in the car. No problem, dad said, so we piled into our green 1970 Country Squire parked outside, which was unlocked. I wanted to listen to the radio but the key wouldn't work. Then I noticed that the electric windows weren't there -- just cranks in their place. Hey! We were in the wrong green 1970 Country Squire. Ours was two cars down. Oops!

You should also try the Red Barn in Santa Ynez if you like Santa Maria barbecue. Nothing like a good tri-tip.

Multi Tasking

Brother Milecrazy left in the early morning hours for his LAX flight back to Vegas. Newself and I rose later and after a good breakfast found out the hotel we snored in is becoming a Radisson in January. (OMNI afterward: the bill listed the hotel with the Radisson name. I may try for some Gold Points.)

The hotel is a nice propoerty and after a few renovations should be nice and ready for we boys to come back.

We walked to the airport and when arriving at the UA counter found a line and NO gate agent to check in. It got past 10 am, 10:05, 10:10 (with the flight leaving at 11am) and no UA people. The line got longer and some got restless.

Then a woman agent who was about 16 and a gray haired came to the area with the line stretching back to L-A. newself said they will probably check everyone in and then go do security.

And that's what happened. The girl asked severals ecurity quesitons and said "are you sure you don't have knifes, scissors, etc." like a school marm.

The cast of flyers including two cute kids running around, several snooty business people and this Amish like dressed family (the father was flying.)

We walked over to the security area with three national guardsmen whose combined ages was probably 55. I got a PEPSi and newself joked I was at the wrong machine.

Then the gate finally open and child agent girl zipped newself straight through but I buzzed becuase of two qquarters in my pocket, my belt and my watch. teh older mustachoed man wanded me and I was thankful I was not asked to get undressed.

We boarded the plane and surprisingly took off on time. THe flight was quick and both newself and I noticed the perfectly clear sky and the planes coming in and taking off, a beautiful scene at LAX.

A Lazy, Hazy Sunday Afternoon

Newself and I headed to teh Hilton LAX. In my last two stays I got a closet even as a gold. Newself and I checked in as double golds and got the towers floor and a very nice big room. It must have been the luck of my beer bud newself! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Newself suggested taking it easy for the afternoon before our dinner with brothers PremEx and Mr. Limo so we headed to his very nice pad. He let me borrow his computer while he went off and grabbed some frequent sleeping points. I started this trip report while enjoying a very cool PEPSI. Nice touch bud! :0

Dinner with Buds

Newself woke from his snooze and after we changed into our best casual duds headed to Mr. Limo's place to up our brother for the dinner. Mr. Limo and his buddy Michael caught up with us on travel and Flyertalk and times and we all lamented the loss of being able to go to the PResident's Club to, as Mr. limo puts it, bending the elbow.

PremEx was goign to hook up with us and gave us a specific place to do it. I remembered where it was and we found out we parked like back in San Francisco. So a lot walk ahead but Mr. Limo, always the optimist, said it will be better after dinner to walk off the feast.

PremEx found us after we called to get a central location and we headed to a wonderful restaurant where the boys toasted my health and miles and friendship for my early birthday.

PremEx and I enjoyed our favorite no calorie lobster bisk and newself and Mr. Limo
salads. then the meat and of course, we all went for beef. I enjoyed Chatteau brionge (SP help please!) A fine wine and great deserts capped off a wonderful meal. Thanks boys for taking time out to dine with me! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It's Not a Small Ride after all

After a very special meal we boys headed to disneyland. Battling the crowds and to get in teh holiday spirit we first did the "Nightmare before christmas" attraction in teh Haunted house. I was not scared, although the boys tried to scare me.

then it was off to "It's a Small World, Holiday Style.' the last time I was on this ride I became ill. I promised not to do that again.

It was all decked out like some people's homes with thousands of lights and colors and holiday displays and cheers. We got on the tram thing and rolled it.

And for the second time on this ride, I had a reaction.

But this time, it was laughter!

I could not stop laughing at all the little dolls singing and teh displays and the song going over and over and over again. They sang nice chirstmas songs (the Jingle cats though could beat them in a contest) and I found the whole experinece totally amusing. PremEx, Mr. Limo and newself stared at me with amusement and puzzlement.

I think my buddies were glad the ride was over, but I had a blast. Did not tempt asking them to go back on it again! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

The weather was getting unusually cold for california (although it felt like a heat wave for me) and we all said our so longs and headed back to our homes (for newself and me, the Hilton.)

E Ticket Machine Tilt, take Two.

The wakeup call came too early at the Hilton. I said my so longs to brother newself and thanked him for an awesome weekend and promised to be back.

The bus was waiting, the Line at Terminal one stretched to Seattle and once I reached Terminal 7 I went to the E-Ticket machine and got a message "you need to see agent concerning your upgrade." http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif The agent happily processed my ticket with the HK 49 as requested and suggested I go to the escalator to security.

Unlike Saturday, the line was short and once I got upstairs found a separate line for 1Ks, PremEx's and first class which was nice. The line moved fast and after checking e-mail at the Internet store (can't remember the name of the place) headed to the plane.

Long Flights are made for Catching Up

I had a very good purser named Antonio who remembered me from two earlier LAX flights and kept the Coca cola flowing through the flight (I couldn't get PEPSI ok?) the breakfast I choose was some wierd eggs florintine. Later for lunch potato soup and salad, which was somewhat edible.

I spent most of the flight catching up on the holiday cards I should ahve written a week ago. Sorry if they are late first. An FA though admired my diligence on getting the cards out on time!

We landed 33 minutes early. It wasn't a dream. So it was off to the AirTrain (which was on time) and headed home to the very anxious for petting "children."

THANKS BROTHERS PREMEX, NEWSELF, MR. LIMO AND MILECRAZY FOR GIVING ME ANOTHER MEMORABLE WEEKEND IN SO CAL! WHEN'S TEH NEXT DO?

MEOWY HOLIDAYS ALL!!!!!
