I was booked on AA from SYR to ORD to SEA on 11 September. Needless to say, I had an unexpected stopover in Chicago. Assuming I remember correctly, I was booked on four AA flights to SEA. Last Thursday night before I went to bed, I thought I would really make it on 1113 Friday night. I even had a gate. When I got up Friday morning, the flight had been cancelled. The rebooked me on Monday morning, but this would have meant three more nights in Chicago.
I decided to try it the old fashioned way and give Amtrak a call. I was able to get a seat on the Empire Builder Friday afternoon which would get me into Seattle Sunday morning. No sleeper was available.
I must give Amtrak a great deal of credit for doing everything they could under trying circumstances. There were 500-600 people on the train when we left Chicago.
The crew on the train was great. The food was certainly a cut above most food you would get on a domestic airline flight. Linens on the dining room tables, fresh flowers, and a reasonably good wine list. Everyone did their best to make it a good trip. I'll certainly fly again, but I also look forward to my next cross country trip on the train.
