Where there onboard announcements made? bedelman Sep 11, 01, 6:12 pm I landed in BOS at 9:20 this morning after a series of flights coming from South America. Went to the AA Admiral's Club / Flagship Lounge, duly entitled to go to the latter based on my class of travel, but was told it was closed. "What are its hours?" I asked, to which I was told that there had been an accident and two planes had hit the World Trade Center, and families would shortly be using the lounge. Didn't find out the rest of the story until I began to look at the TVs -- which were turned on throughout the Admiral's Club (which they hadn't yet closed, though I expect that they did shortly thereafter). I was early enough that perhaps the pilot of my flight into BOS didn't even know what had happened. If he did, he didn't tell passengers as or before we disembarked. B747-437B Sep 11, 01, 6:51 pm I was on DL2745 on the runway at EWR and had a birds eye view of the second hit to the World Trade Center. The captain came over the PA system a few seconds later saying "I guess you guys just saw what I did. I don't think we're going anywhere for a while, so I'm gonna take us back to the gate." One of the FAs did burst into tears and was being consoled by the other two. SFOPremex Sep 11, 01, 7:13 pm I was turned around before I even got near the plane - I was due to fly SJC-LAX but heard about the tragedy in route to SJC and came home. The sites, sounds and images that awaited me on TV are ones that I will never be able to forget. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone tonight..... SFOPremex ElmhurstNick Sep 11, 01, 7:25 pm I was at altitude on ORD-BOS about 70 minutes into the flight. That flight path is virutally a straight line from Lake Erie to Worcester. Suddenly at 9:50am EDT we make an obviously intentional 145 degree left turn and start to descend rapidly. 10 seconds later, the Captain comes on: "... there has been a 'breach of security.' We have been instructed to land immediately at the nearest airport, which is Syracuse. We will be landing shortly." Then a very, very sharp descent and a couple of turns and we're landing safely five minutes later. We had to sit on the tarmac for about ten minutes until a pilot could move one of the empty AA planes out of a gate. During this time, we figured out what had happened thanks to the gaggle of cell phones [but I never got a call out on Sprint all morning]. We were sent straight to the baggage claim. I had none and I went to the F check-in and start setting up a hotel - all the rental cars had "no one-way" signs up already. AA set us up at the Wyndham here with full room and board paid until they can get us out of here. Mats Sep 11, 01, 8:00 pm I've been thinking of all of the FlyerTalkers out there. I hope that everyone is safe while we try to take this all in. Above all, let's do our best to keep flying. If we become to paranoid or panic-stricken, we'll be giving the terrorists exactly what they want. All of us travellers will get through this together. Take care, Little Matt. ozzie Sep 12, 01, 2:46 am A colleague of mine was en-route from London to Toronto - he had to divert to Montreal as Toronto was already full of planes that had been diverted from the US. Captain's words "We can't tell you why, but if you are a US citizen, God Bless" - my colleague was on Air Canada. etna Sep 12, 01, 12:10 pm My mother was enroute Shanghai to San Fran on United, Tuesday morning. Landed at 7:30 AM Pacific time, just as the FAA orders went into effect. Her comments were SFO ground crew said nothing of the attack. Pax were lead to baggage claim, then to customs, where they were "expedited through", in her words, compared to two other times she's arrived from China and waited in long lines. Upon exiting Customs, uniformed guards informed them the airport was closed for security reasons, all further flights were postponed, and that United would arrange lodging. Folks started noticing CNN Airport channel about then too. She ended up at the Westin SFO Airport, and after a few missed long distance calls, we found out where she was, and that she was safe. In the first minute of our conversation, her comment ? These (Heavenly) beds are great! She's expected to continue onward to Tampa when flights resume. She's got bigger b###s than I do. I canc'd BDL-TPA on DL scheduled for today. phllax Sep 12, 01, 2:00 pm My grandparents were on MetroJet 2990 from LGA-PBI. Around 20 minutes out of PBI or so, the pilot came on and told them he had good and bad news, the good news was that they were going to be around 10 minutes early, but the bad news was the attack on the WTC. HE then told them that he would allow them to use their cell phones while they were still in the air. They landed at PBI at 10:22am. My uncle was on Spirit flight 705 from LGA-FLL. They put down in Melbourne, FL, and he and a few other people rented a van and drove the 3 hours to FLL. When they got there the parking garages were locked, so people couldn't get to their cars. |
