Trip report HEL-LHR BA795 June 19th

Well, there's really not much to report on this trip, as I fell asleep the minute I got on, and slept throughout the flight. I'll just put down some of my notes though.

I left the hotel at 06:20, and took a taxi to the airport. As it was raining pretty hard at the time, I didn't get there until half an hour later. I received my boarding pass for this flight yesterday in London already, but it did not show my AA FF number on it, so I asked a check-in agent about it. She told me it was in the system already, and I shouldn't worry. Well, I guess that's ok, as long as my miles post. If it doesn't, I still have my boarding pass to claim them later on. I went through immigration and customs again in Terminal 2, and when I got out, a woman immediately stopped me, stating that she was doing a survey on behalf of the government. I answered a few short questions and was on my way again. I wanted to head to the lounge, and get something to drink, and I stumbled my way into the Finnair domestic lounge. It was pretty crowded inside, and before I can turn and get out, the agent at the desk took my ticket and sent me back out anyways, as that was not the international business lounge. Next, I stumbled into the Finnair international Business lounge, which was supposed to be for OneWorld emerald status or Finnair Business class customers only. Needless to say, I was sent out of that one as well, and directed to the Garden Fresh lounge, which was what I was supposed to use.

That lounge was quite nice. Unfortunately, some of the seats in the lounge was not that comfortable, and took me a while to find the one I liked. An interesting thing about the lounge: in the smoking section, they had cigars for sale. They were also selling one of my favorites Montecristo no. 2. Too bad they didn't have the no. 2 especial I was looking quite some time for. The flight status monitor showed our flight ready for boarding at 07:25, and I proceeded to gate 33, which was the furthest away. The line and crowd at the gate wasn't that long, and I got on the plane within a few minutes. We got on the plane through door 1, and this was a first for me. All the previous 757s that I have taken were United ones, and they were always boarded through door 2. As this is my first BA flight in a very long time (I was so young back then, I can't even remember when it was), I was shocked when I got on the plane. I thought the plane décor was ancient, and the seats extremely uncomfortable. The plane was a 757, but this flight wasn't too popular, and most seats remained empty. My pre-assigned seat was 6C, I was able to change to a bulkhead seat. Menus were handed out before we pushed back from the gate:

Breakfast
Chilled orange juice
Fresh seasonal fruit
Yoghurt
Cheese omelette with Cumberland sausage, bacon, mushrooms and hash browns
A selection of warm bread rolls with butter and fruit preserve
Coffee or tea

Our flight pushed back on time at 07:45, and we took off about 10 minutes later. A few minutes after takeoff, I immediately fell asleep. In the middle of the flight, I did wake up for about 5 minutes to ask for a ginger ale from the flight attendant. After I gulped that down, I fell right back to sleep. I was woken up with a rough landing in LHR, and found out that we actually arrived 20 minutes early. That wasn't too bad at all. Taxing took a while, and they had some problems with the jet way, so we didn't actually get off the plane until 10:05, our scheduled arrival time. Since we landed in Terminal 1, I had to get myself to Terminal 4, and that proved to be a hassle. The security took a long time, as there were a long of arriving passengers. Even after getting my boarding pass for the next flight, I still had to wait for the bus to take me over there. In all, the process took at least 30 minutes, and that wasn't as bad as I could imagine it to be. I can see why not they won't let you book flights in LHR with a connection time of less than 45 minutes. At Terminal 4, I did my tax refund and proceeded to the BA First lounge.

Great Report! Could you explain the cabin set-up for this flight? I know that intra-European flights are unusualy in Business Class. Thanks!

The cabin setup? well, it's basically all Economy class seats. But there's a curtain divider that seperates the two classes. Basically in economy, there are 6 seats across, whereas in business, the change it to 5 seats. They do this by squshing the row of seats on the left (A,B,C), and changing it to A and C only. This doesn't mean A and C seats are wider, but then it does give you more elbow room if you sit on that side of the cabin.

Thanks for the report!

So the A/C side is better than a window or aisle on the D/E/F side it sounds like?

In addition to the elbow room advantage on A and C, I felt that the middle seat E was wider than D and F on a few club europe or equivalent trips I took. I also found that IB and BA business class cabin seats on 757 were pretty similar. the same 3 by 3 layout with the seat B converted into elbow rests (so you only have A and C as tfung mentioned above) and DEF getting the slightly broader side.
