Now so this all makes sense I am typing this as I travel - Live, as it were.
LHR-FRA-JFK
As I sit here in the senator lounge at FRA, my worst fears have come true. A small noisy child (cute, yet noisy) is on the same flight as me. Even more frightening is that his father is booked in First class on the same flight. I notice he is on an O ticket - ie an award upgrade. As I am also on one and LH don't allow to many upgrades in the front cabins, I hope above all hope, that the little tyke is flying with his mother in Y or J. This time also allows me to reflect on the lounge in FRA. I've been through here a great many times, and it still amazes me that there is only 1 Sen lounge for the B terminal, and two Business lounges, located at the end of the hub ends. (side note). Typical of German thinking is that the lounge should be functional rather than endearing. If only every lounge was like a Virgin Clubhouse.
My worst thoughts are confirmed. Mum is on an O ticket as well, which means the little one is on a lap. I will exit and buy a fresh role of duct tape, I am fresh out from the Israel trip.
Change of plan. My name was just called and it seams that the entire flight is overbooked, including F. They have 9 people checked in for a flight that seats 8. As I am the only person flying on their own, they asked me to downgrade, in exchange, I get a free F return anywhere on the LH network, and I can originate out of LHR. Oh and I get back the miles I used for my upgrade. I think that my next flight to San Francisco is all taken care off. Maybe I should have haggled but it seems like a good deal to me. My company will pay half the fare in cash to me if I use FF, points so on a LHR-SFO rtn in J that equals $3750 in my pocket. I asked if I could use LH codeshare flights and he said yes. My evil twisted brain is now thinking SQ F class. Or what about a UA suite ??
On a side note, I think I'd better comment on the flight from LHR to FRA. The plane is usually a 737-300 or a 300-600, on this occasion it was a 310-300. It was also quite unacceptable for a business class seat. It would appear this plane had been pulled of a charter, as it had only the most awful out of date eco seats in a 2-4-2 config. Had I not as always had 1D reserved, I would have deplaned sans kneecap. Normally I would not bother to do anything about it, however seeing as they screwed up the onward part of my flight, might be worth a SWU or LH variant. We shall see.
I've been given seat 4D, so no problem there, just hope there is a good film on, because one of the things I really liked about F is the inbuilt tape player. Oh and the caviar.
Even though the flight was full, boarding was quick. I am sure this is in some part because Lufthansa always board using two jetways. One for F and J and one for eco. I found my seat took out my book and settled in. BTW if you have occasion buy 'TIS by Frank Mccourt. It's the follow on from Angela's Ashes and is absolutely brilliant. OJ, water and Champagne were offered and jackets taken.
We pulled back on time and took off, nothing to unusual. Again it is worth pointing out that the quality of the amenity kits on LH in J, leave something to be desired. There also appears to be a anti snoring nasal spray in the pack as well.
On this particular airbus there is no central overhead luggage bin in either F or the front (12 seat) J section. So I had to put my briefcase behind the seat. There are central bins in the cabins behind.
Shortly after the 10k ping, menu's were dispenced.
Hors d'oeuvre
Seasoned Salmon with Pesto Potato Salad and Purple Mustard Sauce
Duck Mousse complemented by Basil Sauce, Apple Salad and Fig Confit
Salad
Chinese Cabbage, Frisee, Radicchio and Corn presented with a Herb Dressing
Bread, Rolls and Butter
Entrees
Chicken Piccata with Coconut, Curry Lemon Grass Sauce and Vegetable Jilienne
Pike Souffle and Crayfish Tails, accompanoied by Lobster Sauce, Spinach and Basmati Rice
Tortelloni filled with Buffalo Mozzarella, served with Cherry Tomatoes and Italian Spices
Cheese and Dessert
Bonifgaz, spicy Butter Cheese and Grapes
Bean Puree and Rhubarb
Fresh Fruit Salad
I selected the Duck and the Chicken. The duck was quite wonderful, the chicken could of done with a bit more kick, especially at altitude when your taste buds are slightly dulled.
As for films, well I wached Mel Gibson in what women want. A wonderful comedy and that was it. The rest of the flight I read TIS and had a little sleep.
Now it's the sleep bit that puzzles me. Business Class on LH, is not designed for sleeping. The seats don't go back far enough to allow you to sleep on your side, and the pitch is insufficient to allow you to fully extend the foot rest, and use it unless you amputate some toes. Then I looked at how much this flight should of cost, and how much it cost from LHR. The British carriers out of LHR, BA and Virgin, pride themselves on the J section of the plane. As such the cost is higher. On LH it is functional. You can work and rest but not sleep. And that's what the price says.
Anyway the flight was uneventful, with the exception of the little tyke running around in F http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif So glad I have another shot at that.
Plane landed on time and I beezed through immigration. Sadly I was waiting a while at the baggage carosel. In transit somewhere, my orange priority ticket was ripped off, as were my SR,BMI,BA luggage tags. Thankfully my leather Sen tag survived. Had quite a wait as a result for the bag, but then me and my llittle Cubans breezed through customs. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
I will be staying in the Wyndham Wind Watch in Long Island till Friday, I then get to stay one night in the Waldorf Astoria - on hhonors points http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Then a trip to Newark to meet up with Catman and his posse
Next flight :
NYC-SFO in F
