Whatta year!!! Didn't set foot on an airliner from '94 'till 2000. But then I went from no status to CO Gold Elite!
1. SNA-EWR-AMS, January--Couldn't pass up the fare! 5 Days in Amsterdam, and had a great time...Heineken Museum and Anne Frank Haus!!!
2. LAX-IAH-LGW, March--Predictably lousy London weather, but had a great time!!! Especially loved the Tower of London. Like Henry's wives, I found it difficult to leave! Also loved the London Transport Museum in Covent Garden. And I even found SOME decent London food. Geales in Notting Hill is HIGHLY recommended for fish & chips! And some good Irish food in the Ravenscourt Park area.
3. LAX-IAH-PTY-LIM, September--Panama City was fun. Of course, the Canal trip was the highlight, and highly recommended...and also a tour of the city! The Los Anos Locos, just behind the Hotel Caesar Park serves Argentenian steaks that you'd kill for, at very reasonable prices!
Lima, though, was a bit of a disappointment. Generally, a grungy city. Most of Lima makes the South Bronx look like Park Ave.
But a few points of interest...the cathedral where Pizarro is buried, and the catacombs, where you can see a lot of bones. One or two days max here is all you need. The best of Peru is Cuzco and Machu Pichu, which I didn't have time to visit...sigh! Maybe next time...but I'll be out of Lima fast.
4. LAX-SYD, October--Well, here I had an advantage. Stayed with my girlfriend (now my fiancee). She's a native Sydneysider, and I really had the inside track, so I'm a bit prejudiced. But, IMHO, of all the world cities I've been to, Sydney is the absolute greatest...bar none!!! Spent 2+ weeks there, plus almost 1 week at Nelson Bay, and still have missed alot.
So, I'm going back next week! Some day when I retire, I'm planning to move there, at least for 6 months a year...guess which six...grin. I LOVE that city that much!!!
If you don't do anything else in Sydney, you've GOTTA do the Sydney Harbour Bridge Climb!!! Can't recommend that enough!!! If you're afraid of heights like I am, don't let that put you off. The staff there is really great, and very patient! They'll get you through it! And the thrill of the climb, and the view, once you're there, is absolutely unbelievable!!! I'm going back for the Night Climb! For more info: http://www.bridgeclimb.com/
I could go on and on...the Rocks, Taronga Zoo, the Featherdale Animal Farm where you can pet baby 'Roos and Wallabies, Darling Harbour (very touristy, but kinna fun), the Queen Victoria Building (also very touristy, but fun to visit), the great Ferrys, Bondi Beach, Harry's Cafe de Wheels for Aussie meat pies (there are better meat pies around, but Harry's is a Sydney institution), Manley Beach, Centerpointe Tower...on and on and on.
And the weather there is quite similar to southern California, except for a bit more rain. And the Aussies have got to be among the friendliest people in the world! And their sense of humor is the best...if a bit twisted, like mine....grin
5. SNA-EWR-FIO, November--Well, Rome, what can I say? Did all the usual stuff...the Colliseum, the Forum, the Vatican, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Hard Rock Cafe (had to get a t-shirt for my fiancee...under threat of a major snit...grin). Fended off an Italian pickpocket. GREAT pizza at a place a couple doors from my hotel!
6. LAX-HNL-GUM-CNS-SYD, December--Flying the Pacific Puddle-Jumper to CNS and the Great Barrier Reef. Flying CO's only flight into OZ, in order to get the status miles...and got it upgraded with miles! Since I'm flying in via CNS, my fiancee decided to fly up to CNS to meet me. So we're gonna spend 3 days there...a very pleasant vacation with a suite on the Coral Sea. Then we fly down to SYD for Christmas, and 3 wonderful weeks with her, and her family for Christmas. She's trying to get our flight upgraded with points, but QF is giving her a hard time. QF tosses around upgrades like they were manhole covers. But that's what happens when you have a 90% monopoly over a country's flights!
We have a reservation at the downtown Hilton for the fireworks on New Year's Eve. Then, two more weeks to do all the stuff I didn't get a chance to do in October.
Well, that's my year in travel! The most exciting year I've had since my train went over the Berlin Wall and we arrived at the Banhoff Friedrichstrasse (machine guns and all) in 1971!

What a great idea for a topic kempis!
JAN: LHR for a drama tour of England and Wales (on TG)
FEB: to SJC for 4.5 months of work (that was the plan).
MAR: wish I was going somewhere
APR: consider some trips to BOS and LAS after my next trip
MAY: discover flyertalk http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif, to YYJ for a wedding but disaster strikes and I have to go home to PER (thank you INS) - see trip report - it's a hoot.
JUN: back to wish mode
JUL: start another semester of uni but continue in wish mode
AUG: start to hate you all (in the nicest possible way!) because you are making me really want to go somewhere
SEP: didn't get a OW F Class RTW for my birthday - no really a suprise http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
OCT: book an O class RTW flying QF/BA for $800US.
NOV: finish exams and head off the day later, loving HKG airport, visiting Paris, LHR and work in SJC area.
DEC: from SJC to home.
Using WebFlyer's milemarker, I flew 105,000KM (65,000miles) with 22 segments. Sounds like a lot but when you live in PER, everywhere is far away so distance comes naturally. Made Blue on QF for the two US trips. Next year, points to go on AA thanks to Flyertalk advice
Favourite airline club of the year: HKG's QF/BA lounge
Favourite airport: HKG
Favourite flight: tie between LHR trip because of the friends I was flying with and the HKG->LHR trip because I slept easy and it was a great flight. The J class CP flight YVR->LAX should have won but it wasn't a good time after I had just learnt I couldn't get back into the US to even get my clothes.
No more travel this year but I'll make sure there is plenty next year!

No points for guessing all flights were on Delta. Hotels were mostly Marriotts, with a few in the Hilton family thrown in.
Car trips are alluded to where they were esp. noteworthy (to me). We used to do 50,000 a year by car. It's a whole lot easier to do by plane!
Funny, at the beginning of the year, I expected to do more overseas travel; we certainly did in '99. Maybe again in 2001?

2000 was my biggest flying year ever.
January 1st: celebrated beginning of new year and my non-believe in Y2K (remember that word?) by flying SFO - NRT - BKK on NW.
Ended up staying only three days. Didn't get into the proper sleep rhythm and just had to give up on sleeping. Had a lot of fun with my Thai friends though, those three days felt like four times as long.
Came home and got laid off at work with everyone else. Bad, bad, bad but four months severance package: Good!
March 7th: SFO - NRT - BKK on NW again. Went down to Phuket on Thai a few days later, wasn't that impressed by it. My first time travelling alone in Asia and taking the train in Asia (3rd class of course!), I was the only white face in the car.
March 22nd BKK - SGN (Thai)
Second visit to Viet Nam. Stayed at my favorite "nice price" hotel in Saigon, Dong A 1 hotel. Went to Phan Thiet, Danang, Hoi An and Dalat (home of my favourite market in Asia). Will never do Cu Chi tunnels again, my imagination is just a little to stimulated by all those war relics.
One flight on a Vietnam Airlines turbo prop from Dalat to SGN.
April 3rd SGN - BKK
I was worried about making the flight since we were involved in an accident on the way to the hotel (where else in the world can you go to the international airport on a motorbike (I wasn't driving)?). Actually I was even more worried the police might come by and demand a "fee".
April 4th Back to SFO. NW has decided not to give me a Silver Elite bonus for the NRT - SFO portion http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif ).
April 26th: SFO - AMS - MAD (KLM)- Alicante (IB)
My aunt will pay for this trip (sweet!) since it will be my only chance to visit her apartment in Denia, Spain. I had insisited on using KLM for the miles and I certainly will not go on IB for $50 less. Have to stomach a 5 hour wait at AMS though.
Back to SFO on May 9th.
June 22nd: Fulfillment of a dream: Exchange of 140,000 DL FF miles for a First Class ticket on SQ!
SFO - JFK in DL BizFirst (nice legroom but the Vegetarian meal was an embarassment)
My first time in a lounge at JFK.
JFK - FRA SQ seat: 4A
I spent half the trip chatting with the very accomodating crew in the 1st class galley.
June 23rd: FRA - SIN
I have never slept so well on a plane.
June 24th: SIN - SGN
Third visit to Viet Nam. This time Nha Trang, Dalat again and places in and around Saigon. Nha Trang is better than what I have been told but the beach is scary after dark.
One of my best travel moments: Standing in the South China Sea on a wooden platform (actually a restaurants 'live' refrigerator) and looking at sea cratures that I remembered from books I read as a little boy.
July 4th: A teary goodbye at SGN. Back to SIN. My first flight on an A 340. Experiencing the first class lounge at SIN: Whoa! Lock me in here for a week, please.
SIN - AMS - EWR
I love being the first one off the plane.
EWR - ATL - SFO on DL in First.
What a let down after SQ's First class.
October 29/30th: SFO - CLE - MKE - CLE - SFO on CO. Mileage run to reach Gold on NW. I end up walking away with a $200 voucher for volunteering at CLE.
What a year! I couldn't have asked for more travelwise.
