The invitation to visit by 2 good friends and a fabulous UA fare were all the persuasion I needed to visit SFO.
12/8 UA ORD-SFO 767 First
I got to ORD, not knowing if my upgrade had cleared so I decided to search out the 1K room, now that I can finally use it. Although the room is a bit hard to find, it was nice and there was no wait to check in. The agent there was very friendly & gave me the good news that my upgrade had cleared and asked for my upgrade certs (UA really seems to be cracking down on this). The flight took off on time and had a great, friendly crew that made the time pass quickly. This was the first flight I'd ever been on where the chicken dish was wonderfully moist & not the least bit dried out, I guess miracles can still happen. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif We arrived into SFO about 25 minutes early and I got off the plane to find johna waiting for me with a sign and luggage cart.
We made our way to John's beautiful home and had a relaxing evening talking miles and travel before turning in for the evening. The next day, we got a fairly early start when dgolds picked us up for our trip to the Napa Valley (somewhere I have always wanted to go) and we had a beautiful drive. Although it was cloudy, the temperature was very comfortable, especially for me since I had just left snow and cold back in ORD. After stopping at the wine country visitors’ center to stretch our legs & check out the store there, we drove to Domaine Chandon for a wonderful day. I had never been to a winery where sparkling wines were made so the tour & hearing about the process was fascinating. Before our tour, though, we had lunch in the restaurant there which was just marvelous! I had a lovely Bosc pear & endive salad along with a very tasty beef tenderloin. Since, as a rule I do eat dessert ( http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif sorry, QL), I had what they called "Stuffed Crepe Brulee" which was a crepe folded into a square pocket filled with a delicious, silky creme brulee. It was a really unique presentation that worked very well. The service was as wonderful as the food and our waiter was attentive without being obtrusive. All in all, a truly terrific dining experience! After the tour, I indulged in the 5 wine tasting which was actually 6 sparkling wines and 2 still wines and all were great!
On Sunday, johna and I met up with danville 1K for dim sum in the new international terminal at SFO and we got to see the new RCC there. It was enormous! We then had a good meal and wonderful conversation. All too soon, it was time to say goodbye.
12/10 UA SFO-ORD 777 Coach
Unfortunately, the upgrade gods were not as kind to me today. Although up until the last minute, I had a chance at the upgrade, I ultimately had to take my coach seat. I suppose if you have to fly coach, a 777 is a good plane for it. I was lucky in the regard that they had cancelled the flights before and after mine and we only ended up being delayed about 45 minutes due to "weather" (not sure if it was the low ceilings in SFO). The flight went well and I got back without incident.
I just wanted to extend my thanks to johna, dgolds & danville 1K for a great time!
