I promised that I would report on the Pen in Bangkok and I have been remiss. Now that I have returned, I will fulfill the promise. We spent a total of 8 nights at the hotel during our 3 weeks in Thailand and I give the hotel my highset recommendation. From the service to the food to the decor and artwork in the rooms and suites- it is the hotel bargain of the century. We had a suite and a connecting twin room. The views are fantastic and although the higher floors are technically the most desirable rooms, I prefer floor 6 where the views of the working river are more upclose and personnel. We stayed on floor 5, 6 and 27.
(Plus I was traumatized by Towering Inferno as a teenager) The rooms are so high tech that an engineering degree may be needed to operate all the gadgets. The suites are equipped with dvd players, laser disc players, 3 tvs and more phones than is almost possible for a room. There are 2 lines, a fax machine in each room, a phone and master control panel on each side of the bed, 2 phones in the bathroom- a handsfree set in the tub as well as a tv and a phone in the separate john. Mood lighting and art lighting and newspapers delivered several times a day from the Bangkok Post to the WSJ to the Tribune to the NAtion. Twin sinks and lots of marble in the bathroom. Electronic curtains operated from the bedside and other locations in the suite. Yummy fruits replenised daily as well as great housemade chocolate chip cookies each day. The girls especially liked those. The room service menu was an unbelievable bargain adn food was served quickly and beautifully with orchids, of course. The views are fantastic, especially at night. While the skyline does not rival NY or Hong Kong, it is still very impressive. Frankly, the views from this side of the river are much superior to those of the other side. The river shuttle service is efficient and friendly and all the staff go out of their way to be helpful- remembering names and food orders and always smiling. A frequent business traveller we met in the piano bar, which, by the way, has a great pianist, suggested that these intro rates be kept a secret. The included breakfast was the terrific, It made it difficult to stay any place else in Thailand. From tropical fruits to dim sum to Thai breakfast to a baker whose croissants rivaled those found only in France to smoked salmon to muesli to house made yogurt- all the elements of anyone"s breakfast fantasy or needs were met. The kids wanted to move in, a la Eloise at the Plaza. Probably the first hotel experience that we felt was better than home. The pool was lovely, set at river level and the fitnesds center was well outfitted and not crowded. The hotel is still very new and the furnishings look unworn. The flowers in the public spaces and rooms were lovely and the beds were great- down or that wonderful down substitute comforters and pillows . I could go on, bit I will stop- Still jet lagged- only home a day. Any questions? email me.

Thanks for the welocome home Geo and thank you Rudi, as well. The resident manager, Ian Coughlan was delightful and super attentive, Rudi. He had an anniversary cake sent to our room that was almost as good as my Wengen birthdy cake. Have a safe journey and let me know how the hotel compares to your usual Oriental experience. The resident manager said that he thought it would take about 7 years for the hotel to equal its Hong Kong status. They are well on their way.

Welcome home and I'll have to try the Pen next time.

I hope you were able to upgrade everyone on the flights.

Welcome back Droneklax, we saw only a few evening showers as well. The Phi Phi Islands are stunning, but touristed. Stimpy, our flights out were not upgraded because of major UAL hassles- we were lucky to have seats at all, or so UAL told us, When I regain the energy I will post the sad saga of our outbaound trip to BKK. The return, however was upgraded thanks to the UAL "major misservice" as they put it. Business class on the 777's was very comfy for all of us, even tho our meal choice was limited. Thanks, Stimpy and do try the Pen. I am sure you will like it.

Just made reservations this morning for four nights in late November and thought I'd check to see if any FTrs had stayed lately and voila. Thanks for the report. Did you have any luck upgrading between NRT and BKK? United says it's sold out "the rest of the year". What gives?

RK7, Ual has one flight a day between NRT and BKK. They are currently running a packed 777. We were on the upgrade list with many others and this was the leg we did not make it- we were 4 travelling, but others with higher priority did get upgraded. The upgrade lists are long this summer- filled with premiers and other FFers and all the regular folks who have recieved subpar service from UAL and ask for upgrades. The NRT-BKK plane was entirely full in both directions. I think this is a big Japanese business connection and Nov is big convention travel time. Good Luck with your stay at the Peninsula- the suites are worth the extra money, if you need to spread out. Remember that your room includes a one- way airport transfer.

naxos,

I have been traveling monthly to BKK. I have been staying at the JW MArriott. After reading your report I may change Septembers trip to the Peninsula. The Penn in Manila is fantastic also.

Have usually stayed at the Oriental or Shangri La. Just switched first stay in BKK in Nov to the Regent after Conde Naste rated it best in Asia...but at $200/nite w/bkfast, a bit steep. Ajnyone able to compare SL, Penn and Regent?

I can definitely confirm naxos' experience at the Peninsula. I spent a weekend there in June with a group of 15 girls from Singapore and the service was just amazing.
It was my friend's bachelorette party http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cool.gif and the hotel staff gracefully honoured each and every one of our little requests with a big smile... private check-in (let's get those girls out of the lobby... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif), free limousines for the big night out in style, all rooms on the same floor for more fun and yes, room service staff is more than happy to take pictures of the happy crowd without even rolling their eyes or commenting on the slightly messed up hotel room!
Huge compliments to Mrs. Saipin Laoharanu, Director of Social Affairs & Protocol whose charm and expertise covered everything from shopping to dining & clubbing. And all that at unbeatable rates.
I would definitely go back any time.

I have stayed at this hotel on a couple of occasions and agree that it is perhaps the best travel bargain around. One important caveat is in order, however. The hotel is on what is considered to be the "wrong" side of the river (think Jersey City or Hoboken vs. Manhattan). If you are traveling back and forth a lot during the day, it's kind of a hassle. You have to either take the water taxi across the river, then hail a real taxi, or take a taxi on a circuitous route up to a bridge which then takes you into town.

Overall, I'd say go for it-- I recommend this hotel to friends quite often.
