Trip Reports - My Last LAX-PDX Commute

View Full Version : My Last LAX-PDX Commute

Since we'll be moving to CA next week (driving), this is scheduled to be my last flight between cities. Probably the next time I come back to PDX will be for the closing on our house, or for business.

Arrived at LAX at 6:05am for the scheduled 7:00am flight (AS411). LAX was as busy as I've ever seen it until I realized this is the last week before Labor Day…that's why there were so many families w/kids here at 6am.

Had confirmed my upgrade yesterday (2D) and would be using my last MVP coupon (hint) http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif . Walked in & found the lines at the AS counters were sooooo long, both regular & MVP. The kiosks were empty, so I made a quick decision to save my coupon & pay the $40 for the U/G.

Checked in at the kiosk, got my B/P and they called me immediately for my checked bag. Those kiosks are GREAT! From the time I punched in my number to the time I walked away from the counter…total time maybe 2 minutes. All this & extra miles too. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Through security, stopped & got a coffee and wandered a bit through the busy terminal. I was surprised to see a number of the shops already open at 6:15am. Since I didn't have any more Board Room passes (hint), went to the gate area to read the paper. The PDX gate area, 31A, didn't look that busy.

Finally went to the door at 6:55am to await the call. The Pilot come out to pick-up some paperwork and I recognized him…and he also recognized me. His name is Jerry Pugliese and I've probably flown with him 5-6 times over the last year. Super nice guy who has previously invited me into the cockpit a few times. We chatted briefly and he told me the weather between LAX & PDX was gorgeous, so we should have a very nice flight.

Got the call & was first to board…only 2 other pax behind me at the time. Greeted by a smiling, pretty FA named Heidi who said "great to see you this morning!" Nice way to start a flight, eh? Settled into seat 2D, which had a pillow, blanket & orange juice waiting. Heidi asked if she could get me anything else…no thanks.

It was apparent early on in the boarding process this was not to be a very full flight. Lots of folks at the airport, but most of them obviously don't take their vacations in Portland. The actual headcount on this 737-700 was 7 in F (of 12) and 33 in Y. When I peeked back through the curtain, it looked like there was no one seated beyond row 16. Except for a couple in Row 1, the rest of us in FC had 2 seats each. I moved to the window seat after the door closed.

We pushed back at exactly 7am, quick taxi and a slight wait for a few others ahead for takeoff. Weather was beautiful and this was one of the smoothest flights I've been on in a while. Fell asleep right after takeoff & was wakened by Mary, the FC FA (where's Heidi?) to ask if I wanted breakfast. Fruit, cereal, berry scone & coffee was offered, which I accepted. One thing I did notice for the second straight AS flight was there were no little prayer cards on the tray. That's been such a tradition with AS that you miss it when it's not there. Wonder if they've been getting flak about them from pax?

After breakfast tray was removed, I napped for about ½ hour. Woke up when I heard a crash from the galley (apparently Mary had dropped a tray of coffee mugs). Got up to stretch and spent some time talking to her in the galley and helping her clean up the broken cups. She told me this flight was going to SJC after PDX, then back to PDX, then into OAK. She was working all 4 legs.

Capt. Jerry came on the PA and said we'd be arriving into PDX about 15 minutes early, but the scenery for the last ½ hour of the trip should be great. IT WAS! The part I enjoy so much about flying into/out of PDX is seeing the mountains (Three Sisters, Mt. Hood, Mt. St. Helens, etc) and flying down over the Columbia Gorge and into PDX. I've flown into a lot of airports over the years, but PDX will always remain as a special place to fly from/to, especially seeing everything so green year-round. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Gorgeous weather aloft, then through the low clouds into PDX, where it was a bit overcast and cool. Smooth landing and quick taxi to gate C17, I thanked Mary for the great service and bid her adieu. Got to Baggage and my bag was about 6th or 7th to come off, outside & said goodbye to PDX for awhile. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I will really miss this area, but look forward to finally getting settled in Southern CA. We start the drive down I-5 (note to Matt Wald: in OR we still call it I-5; when you cross the state line into CA it becomes THE 5) next Wednesday and hope to be into our house in Rancho Palos Verdes (overlooking Long Beach Harbor) on Labor Day weekend.

Close this chapter & a new one begins…

Those prayer cards would sure send me running down the terminal to another airline!
I find it obnoxious and quite insensitive to ASSUME that everyone on board is a Christian.

Here's an example of such cards: http://www.mercurycenter.com/local/alaskacrash/crash020300d.htm

What if I am Buddhist, Muslim, Jewish, Animist, what if I believe in the God of the Mighty Pebble, what am I, chopped liver ?

Welcome to SoCal!

Shadow,

You are going to live in Rancho PV and you are asking (hinting) for upgrade certs and Boardroom passes? Can you and Jackie adopt me?

When you get settled in the great state of SoCal (home of the World Champion Lakers), we have a couple of pubs to visit. My year long vacation from my clubs is almost over with, so maybe I can get you and Stimpy to join our men's club at El Dorado for the new year?

Droneklax...I'm not a fan of the prayer cards, nor offended by them. Just have gotten used to seeing them for so long, I've wondered why they stopped.

Was it sometime after the AS261 tragedy?

Welcome to the neighborhood. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Can you adopt me too? RPV is beautiful.

Great report, Shadow. I've never had the opportunity to fly AS... definitely will when/if the chance presents itself.

Good luck on your move! I'm driving MCO-SDF this weekend. Not looking forward to the drive. But, ah! - the destination!

Cheers,

Shadow, we'll miss you in the NW, but hopefully you can come to the Seattle get together. I still come to LA on the weekends to my Studio City home, so I get the best of both worlds.

Thanks to all of you for the kind words. I'm typing this sitting on the floor of what formerly was our family room, no furniture & just an air mattress to sleep on tonight.

We hit the road very early Wed. morning & may try to do the trip in 1 day. More when we get to the LA area & I can get connected.

Newself: what's EL Dorado? A mexican Restaurant? Can I come too when I get to L-A again?

Shadow: I wish you and Jackie well in your new home. It would be so difficult for me to leave NYC behind (I have so many friends and so many memories and so many things FAMILIAR to me.) But as my best buddy Wes points out: you have a great network of friends in the
L-A area who will help you adjust.

Good luck to both of you and I hope it goes well for you.

Great report Shadow, nice to hear about smooth flights in this turbulent time with United.

By now you should have crossed the state line and enjoyed THE scenery and on THE 5, and THE jam by THE Grapevine, so here's a big WELCOME to sunny Southern California to Shadow and Jackie.

I think I'll get in line to be adopted too! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Thanks Peter...and there were no jams on THE 5 or 405, so that part was good. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Here’s the final leg of this Trip Report….

Up at 3:15am shower, feed the animals and load the last of our stuff into 2 cars. Then time to round-up the animals and hit the road. We decided to make the trip in 1 day, opting not to stay on the road with the animals. After playing with the beads on my abacus, I deduced that we could make LA (specifically the Residence Inn-Manhattan Beach) by 8:30pm-10pm, depending on how many ‘pit stops’ we needed to make.

After loading the 3 cats into their respective ‘travel’ crates, we did one more pass around the house to check closets, etc. for things missed. Loaded the rest of our stuff, then the cats in my car and our dog Buddy in Jackie’s car. As we talked on the way out the door,
Jackie’s words, don’t look back!, echoed through the empty living room. The house sounded so hollow last night and as I shut the door for the last time…

After a quick stop at 7-11 to add some ice to the coolers, we were on the road at 4:35am.
I couldn’t resist saying to Jackie just before we pulled out of 7-11, “you know which way we’re going, don’t you?” Her response was classic, “duh, I-5! (that’s about as talkative as I’ve heard her at 4:40 in the morning) Onto THE 5 by 5:00am, the travel odyssey had officially begun.

The cats were fine after the first 10-15 miles, and quieted down to sleep in their respective ‘kitty hotels’. We stopped about 4-5 times for Buddy to water the landscape at
Rest Stops. We were so adamant about getting to LA by early nightfall, we even ate on the run after stopping for breakfast at a Burger King in Eugene, OR.

Now a word of praise for my lovely wife…she’s the one who pushed for leaving earlier than our originally planned 6am, and I’m sure happy she did. The timing was great…we had virtually no traffic snarls to deal with for the entire trip. We made the OR-CA line by 9:30am, then an incredible view of Mt. Shasta in the bright sunshine. Welcome to California was what the sign said, and we did feel welcome as we drove to our newest
address. And the weather was perfect for a ‘road trip’.

About 10 miles north of Sacramento we got to see 5-6 planes takeoff from the airport. We got into Sacramento by 2:45pm (I think), breezed down THE 5 through downtown with no problems. Now the most boring part of the trip was about to begin…the dreaded drive through the San Joaquin Valley. I had remembered this from when I drove cross-country from NJ to PDX 5 years ago, and tried to warn Jackie that it’s VERY long & boring. We stopped for gas, coffee and snacks just south of Anderson, CA and forged ahead.

The drive through the SJ Valley was very looooong, but with very sparse traffic on this Wednesday afternoon. We had stopped in Santa Nella for a quick snack and to ‘water’ ourselves and the animals. Later, as I drove by a road sign that said, BAKERSFIELD 35 miles, I remembered that newself sometimes spends the week working there. I thought it might be fun to call & surprise him with a dinner visit. Got on the trusty AT&T cellphone and rang him up to find he was in LGB and had just finished having dinner with his son. He told me about the dinner on Tuesday night with RichG and a group of other FT’ers at DalRae. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/cool.gif We agreed to meet-up in the next few weeks, once we get settled into the house.

The rest of the trip is kind of a blur…as dusk had passed and night was settling in, we came into the Tejan Pass, over the mountain and were dumped into the Valley. Down past the Getty Museum, onto THE 405 and off at Rosecrans, to Sepulveda and to the Residence Inn at 9:05pm.

TOTAL Trip Time = 16 hrs, 30 minutes (including all stops)
TOTAL Miles Travelled = 977

By my calculations (abacus again http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif), that’s averaging at bit over 59 mph for the entire trip. Considering we probably never went less than 75-80 through the SJ Valley, as well as other barren stretches, I thought the average might be a bit higher.

We picked up the keys today at the Realtor’s office in RPV & unloaded both cars, then went back to the RI to load up clothes for another run. Still have a few more things to take on Friday, then we can clear out of the RI by Saturday or Sunday. The movers will be here at 8:30am on Saturday, and then we will be spending the weekend unloading boxes.

Just came back from LAX, to pick up Jackie’s daughter coming from YVR. The traffic is horrible! On the 6PM news they said flights this weekend (actually starting tonight) out of LAX are booked at over 90% full. I think they said that over 600K people will arrive or depart LAX in the next 5 days…

PS – For you animal lovers out there (we know who you are), all pets came through the trip very well. The A-B-C cats (Angel, Barney, Cassidy) slept virtually the entire way, except for a few MEOWS, and Buddy is fine too. They did a lot of sniffing around in the RI last night, but they’ll have a big, new place to check out in 2 more days. Cassidy is on my lap as I’m finishing this right now.

Thanks for enduring this combination Trip Report…it’s somewhat cathartic to put it into words just to ‘finalize’ the entire move. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Can I be your "Kato"? Really. I make a great "houseguest". Drive you to the airport. Make sure your upgrades clear. That sort of thing. Will work for miles.

Shadow, glad you and Jackie and "the children" got thru ok.

Eddie tends to travel very well. Yaz lets out these pittiful cries through most of the trip, as if he's being tortured. So sometimes I have to put his carrier in the front seat so he ssees a familiar face.

But I ask again: what is EL DOrado?

This is ACTING CMDR CATCOP speaking, are you listening? El Dorado is the name of the golf course in Long Beach that I rototill from time to time, donate money to my needy friends, and quaff large quantities of brew. Once you learn to play the game, then maybe, just maybe, we will get you out there for 19 holes. But you have to remember this...they do not serve Sams or Pepsi!

Shadow...thanks for the call the other night. I would have met up with you two if I was in Bakersfield that night. Did you get a chance to stop at Harris Ranch outside of Coalinga? Hopefully you took a pitstop there, as it is a great place to wet your whistle.

Also wanted to tell you that I have 2 AS Angels, one at SNA (also the Fishtale) and one in SEA with whom I am having lunch with before Essxjay's Seattle Pub Crawl.

I HATE moving, which is one of the reasons I hardly ever do it. Glad the trip went well.

But a question for PremEx: If you are playing Kato, and Shadow, presumably, is playing Inspector Clouseau, who is playing the Herbert Lom part?

PremEx: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gifTotally missed that connection... but since Kato Kaylin has not been in the news in a month or two, my mind was not heading in that direction. (Brentwood: left on Sunset off the 405, that is.)

I think it's an East Coast / West Coast thing.

Sunday morning 9:20am PDT...we're in!

Movers left at 2:00pm yesterday, then the fun began. My stepson came over at 3pm, offering to help, saw the swimming pool and spent an hour 'relaxing' while we humped boxes.

Finally quit at 11:00pm; we could just barely stand up by then. Started at 7:30 this morning, stopped for a quick breakfast and just set up my computer.. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

It will take another week or so before we've got the house the way we want it, but today & tomorrow will give us a big leg-up on that.

PremEx: You're always welcome to come be a house guest. Only stipulation is you must skim the pine needles out of the pool in the morning. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

RichG...I think you've got your characters mixed-up. shadow will be playing The Shadow, alias Lamont Cranston, not Inspector Clouseau. The part of his man-servant, Kato, is still being cast... http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
