Between Mrs. 'toad (who always wanted to be a Kentucky Woman, Biff, Harley and Powder (Kentucky Wildcats at heart and the yet to be named Mini-me, it was decided that Orlando was truly a fine place to visit. But, like all visits, it must come to an end. Heretofore therefore and wherefore, the 'toads are saying farewell to The Mouse and hello to rolling hills, changing seasons and country living minutes from the city.

It all started with the normal stuff, but this is the first job I have been offered when I never did go in for a personal interview. Everything was accomplished via phone and e-mail. We have spent a bit of time in SDF, and actually have thought about relocating there for some time, so it wasn't like a brand-new place for us. Still, things never seem the same when you are 'just visiting' compared to scoping out a place to live. Here is our story.

Having dealt with all of the necessaries and formalities of the new job, it dawned on us that, perhaps, a visit would be in order; so that we could procure lodgings. Trusty laptop fired up, I first checked Travelocity to find out the lowest fares. Midway was there, as were Southwest and Delta. Alas, Midway's schedule was no good and I hate Southwest even more than DL, so DL Express it was (SW and DL have the only non-stops MCO-SDF). I was shocked and amazed to find that I could reserve exit-row seats via the DL web site. This was, it turns out, the veriest smartiest thing I could've done. The exit row on DL express is awesome! Absolutely the only way to fly on this plane.
Next up was temporary lodgings for our house-hunting visit. A loyal HHonors member, I of course checked them first. Doubletree, Seelbach (Hilton) or Hampton Inn were the choices. Since any relo savings are passed on to me, I went the cheap route and chose the Hampton Inn. Bad choice. I didn't know that there were any hotels left that still had individual outside entrances. Spoiled me, I guess. The next day, we had a 'sudden change of plans' as I had discovered that there was a Hilton Garden Inn one exit down I64. We're there. Especially since the rate was the same ($69 includes breakfast). You can't tell the difference between the SDF Garden Inn and the San Mateo. Henry Ford would be proud. Still, a very nice room complete with 2 line phone, microwave, fridge and a window that opens (only 6"). This was better. Much better. (Even though the phone ringer didn't work).

Non-travel personal related stuff follows

Having made the mistake of buying 'too quick' in the past, we decided to rent. Having had enough of gated-apartment-community living in MCO, we said no, nay, never, no nay never no more to apartment living and set our sights on rental houses. By Saturday evening, we decided that was a major mistake. At least with an apartment, you know what you will get, what you will pay and how much it will suck. The dream of our Old Kentucky Home seemed lost. Perhaps our standards were too high... but really, nothing is too good for Mrs. 'toad. And the places our friendly Realtor/property management agent showed us were perfect. If one was moving from Cabrini Green. Despair and depression set in. Mrs. 'toad spent the night crying. And if mama don't sleep; don't nobody sleep! 6AM and I'm up and at 'em; knowing in my heart of hearts that the dream house (at least for the next year) will magically appear in the Sunday Courier-Journal. Alas, all seemed hopeless yet again as I pored over the for rent adverts. Never one to give up, I made a list of 10 or 12 properties to see and began making calls around 8. Apparently it is a religious town, as not one call was answered. Yahoo! Maps to the rescue as, fortunately, several properties actually listed addresses. I plotted directions and an itinerary and informed Mrs. 'toad that she would likely need the barf bag as we would be spending the next several hours in the car. Her face showed pure joy. Well, that's what I'm calling 'that look' as to think of it otherwise would cause me to begin drinking far earlier than the 1:00PM hour allowed by Kentucky law.

And wouldn't you know, the first place we saw (today) was the last place we had to see. A magnificent, albeit smaller than hoped for, country home just minutes from the city. This is the Kentucky of our minds. We hadn't even finished pulling into the drive when Mrs. 'toad shouted 'Sold!'. Which immediately caused my heart to fail as I thought she had seen a sign saying the property was no longer available. Silly me. That was the code-word for 'don't even think about driving me around to show me anything else this is the house I want and you will make sure that I get it or your life will not be worth a plugged nickel'. Okie, dokie says I. I called the landlord from my cell and told him we were in the driveway of the property. I'll be right over, he says. Prepared to wait for awhile, we settled in. Seconds later, our new landlord walked from his house to 'ours'. The landlord, you see, is also the neighbor. This could be a good thing. After the obligatory tour, we discussed details and miscellany. Turns out, he is an ex-pilot and his wife is a FA. I'm sure we will have some great conversations over the fence!

Saying our good-byes and seeyousoons, we decided to celebrate with a decent lunch at the 5th quarter. Minutes from SDF, this is a great place to have a steak, an awesome salad bar and catch a game if one is playing. Or, you can opt for the dining room experience and catch the after-church crowd rewarding themselves.

End boring, personal stuff

Arriving at the check-in counter, we were dismayed (though not surprised) by the number of DL cancellations. On further review, we determined that our flight was not one of the affected. Dang. I had a great speech all prepared, too. No such luck as the comfy exit-row this time. I could not believe the (lack of) pitch in the seats. Truly, this is the worst I've ever experienced. Fortunately, the middle seat remained empty and I was able to sit semi-sideways. Hell on the back, but better than getting my knees smashed. Thunderboomers in MCO kept us circling for awhile - we landed 25 minutes late. Ran the gamut of FTs (do tell - why do families of 6 feel they must walk abreast?) and back to our temporary home we went.
All's well that ends, and this is the end of this report. More to follow, however, as I'll be driving to SDF this weekend and doing a couple of weekend commutes via air until our stuff can be packed & moved.

Cheers,

'toad

Jeff...best of luck with your new job and new 'digs'. Hope all goes well. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Mrs Shadow & I will be in our cars, driving down I-5 tomorrow from PDX-LAX to move into our new place...Casa du Shadow.

Will your new job offer travel to any extent?

Thanks, Shadow! The new job will offer some travel, but not the righteous mileage-accumulating overseas trips. Oh well... it was good while it lasted!

Cheers,

'toad

Mrs. 'toad, while not registered, asked me to post her version of our trip:
---------------------------------------------
Mrs 'toad writes:

Trip to Louisville (I only have read QuietLion's so I only have his style to go by)

We left the apartment at 9:00am on Friday to catch our 10:35 flight on Delta (Doesn’t Ever Leave Timely Atall). It was a day that reminded us once again why we are moving. It was already 95 degrees and extremely humid. To top that off, there were about 3 brush fires which had been put out the night before leaving a smell (even to us smokers) worse than an ashtray.

We parked at Flite Park. Hammertoad was even nice enough to park my pride and joy in the “covered” parking. The bus picked us up promptly. I could tell Hammertoad was becoming irritated by the time the driver stopped to wait for the 2nd carload of passengers. Doesn’t the driver know that Hammertoad needs to be picked up and immediately taken to the airport? We arrived at the airport with enough time to spare for Hammertoad to have a Bloody Mary and 3 Marlboro Lights. I’m trying to quit, so I waited like a good little girl at Gate 96.

It was a relatively empty flight. We were flying on a B737. We got exit rows, seats 10D and 10F, which was very nice. Not as nice as first class of course, but considering this flight didn’t have first class, we had the best seats in the house. As expected of Delta, they only offered beverage service. I’m trying to get used to the idea of having a kid, so I packed us chips, cookies, pop, peanuts, fruit, etc…Hammertoad told me I was going to be a good mother. One thing I’ve noticed since I became “with bun” is the fact that the word “mother” has taken on new meaning. I’ve been called a “bad” mother, a “mean” mother, and other such things. Now when spoken, those same phrases take on a negative meaning instead of a positive one. Anyway, I guess being a “good” mother is a compliment. The chocolate chip cookies I made were actually “bars” as I didn’t want to take the time to spoon out all the dough….I guess that makes me a “lazy” mother. Anyway, our flight landed on time in Louisville. It was a lovely 81 degrees. No humidity! We rented a car from Avis. Our keys were ready at the Avis Preferred counter, however, they didn’t deliver our car to us. I needed the exercise, so I was okay with that. From there we began what would become two days of disappointing house searching. We’re not sure where we’d like to live, so in the meantime we decided to rent a house. As this is a site for frequent fliers and not house renters, I’ll spare all the details, but lets just say that the places we looked at and that the agency showed us were….well…if I told you that at 2:30 Sunday morning I was still awake crying, would that help you get the picture? Small, dumpy, yucky! I don’t have to live like a Queen, but I refuse to live like poor white trash. Sunday the Lord answered my prayers and we found something we can both live with for a year. It’s not my 40 acres with a Queen-Anne Victorian farmhouse in the middle, but it’ll do.

As far as accommodations…the first night we stayed at a Hampton Inn. I’ve stayed at some before when I was working and generally have good things to say about them. This one, however, was not at the top of my list. It was okay, as it was only $69. However, if you would need to do any type of “work” it would not be the most comfortable. No desk and the lighting would not be conducive. It was one of those hotel rooms that is good for two things…a place a sleep and a place to take your date on Prom night. The 2nd night we stayed at the Hilton Garden Inn. Same price, but this was much better. It had a fridge and a desk and was overall just more clean and nice looking. It’s one of those places for people like us who have a budget….

The first night I wasn’t feeling all that well. I think it had something to do with spending a day with Hammertoad driving. Had a bit of “motion-sickness.” So, that night was Pizza Hut for dinner. The 2nd night we had dinner from a place called the Bristol Bar and Grill(e). We’d eaten there before and if you are at all into “fufu” steaks, this is a great place to try. I had the Steak Forrestier and Hammertoad stuck with a basic sirloin. “Forrestier” had onions, bacon and mushrooms with some kind of fufu sauce made with wine. **** tasty is all I can say. We didn’t have dessert, because, as a rule, we DRINK dessert. My favorite dessert in the past has been something I’ve found to taste really good, but not fill you up after a big meal…..Yep, you got it….a Miller Lite!!!! Because of my “condition” however, I had to pass. Hammertoad did stop at the liquor store and picked himself up a small bottle of Dewars. I still don’t think it’s fair that he gets to drink and I don’t…..Ladies? Any advice? We had lunch at a place called “The Fifth Quarter” on Sunday before going to the airport. The meals themselves were fine, but what most sticks in my head was the fact that they don’t serve alcohol before 1:00 (yes, PM). So, the waiter told Jeff it was too early. We had to show him our watches to prove to him that it was really 1:15. So, Hammertoad ended up getting his Bud Light after all.

Our return flight left at 4:55 PM. The flight back was not nearly as nice as the flight over. This time we didn’t have exit row seats. We were in 16D and F. So, in typical Delta style we flew back with our knees under our chins. Of course, wouldn’t you know it…we had to circle outside Orlando for about 25 minutes because of a storm. We finally landed and headed to pick up my car. Bus service was good. If you are ever in Orlando and for some reason have a car at “Flite Park” pick up the bus at Terminal B and not Terminal A…it is much faster. We got to my car and I was happy to see my top still intact and untouched. We were home within the hour after making a grocery stop. Our boys “Biff, Harley and Powder” were all happy to see us (probably because we left the air at 85 degrees).

Shoot! No more meeting you for drinks, dinner, and stogies at Bongo's at Disney's West Side! Well, can't really say I blame you. Orlando. Home of Tupperware. I'm sure we'll connect up at some FlyerTalk event in the future.

Congrats on the move and best of luck in your New Kentucky Home!

Yes, PremEx, we'll meet again! The 2.4 of us will be in DUS for Altbier (though it will be 'neinbier' for Mrs. 'toad and mini-me). Are you planning to attend?

Cheers,

Well Mr. Toad...hope your weather is better than the last time I was in Louisville, about 3 years ago.

In July, for 4 days, the temp. never got below 97 and the humidity was the same http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif But at least you do get a change of seasons.

Still look forward to meeting up with you and Mrs. Toad somewhere along the line.
