I was in Rome two years ago, and stayed at Hotel Gregoriana, a charming hotel on the street leading up to the Spanish Steps. I'm going back next month, and Hotel Gregoriana is not available. Instead, I can stay at either Hotel Internazionale or the Inter-Continental, both at the top of Via Sistina. Has anyone stayed in either of these hotels? Thanks.

I stayed at Intercontinental de Ville earlier this year. It has a great location and service, but the hotel rooms are not what you would find in a typical US deluxe property. Don't get me wrong. The rooms are nice, but for $200 per night....

Next time in Rome, I will probably stay at one of the properties near the top of Via Veneto. There's a subway entrance there which makes that location good also.

If you do decide to stay at the Intercontinental, make sure you join their Six Continents club. All the perks without needing status! Join at least a month before leaving on your trip. They are based in London and the mail is slow.

Back in February, my wife and I stayed at the Eden, around 5 minutes from the top of the Spanish Steps, and just off Via Veneto. The view from the top floor restaurant was exquisite: a panorama of the whole city.

I stayed at the Hotel Internazionale in this Feb. It was a typical European small hotel with around 50 rooms. Sevice was pretty good, and you could find everything you need in your room. Don't expect any special service offered to the guests like those in large hotel chains, but you will find everything very comfortable. The best of this hotel is of course, the excellent location and the price. I paid only 340,000 lira for the room in Feb, which was almost half of what I needed to pay next door (Hotel Inter-Continental)

If money doesn't matter than the Hassler is THE ultimate luxury choice right on top of the spanish Steps.

The InterConti (de Ville) is 2 blocks away from the Hassler and I share BillMorrow's view on this (but my stay at the InterConti dates back to the soccer-world-championships in 1990 ...).

In real life, you can get a place at the top of the Spanish Steps -- at the Hassler Hotel Villa Medici. I first stayed there more than 10 years ago, as a reporter on assignment, and it more than lived up to my cinematic fantasies. But I always wanted to return under more romantic circumstances. So when my husband and I decided to kick off a two-week trip to Italy with a long weekend in Rome, I suggested the Hassler, regaling him with tales of its spectacular views and charming Old World atmosphere...

As it turned out, there is a certain faded feeling to the Hassler.

doc, all this time I presumed you were male. I apologize for the error.

First, yes, doc is male. At least he appears to shave on a regular basis. <g>

Another travel tip: If you are tired of walking up those oh-so-lovely Spanish Steps, there is an elevator to the top! As you face the Spanish Steps, the subway entry is in the first alleyway to your left. As you enter the subway, there is an elevator to your right.
