Trip Reports - MCO-ORD-PHX-DFW-MCO-MIA-YYZ-MIA-MCO (It's long, but at least it's not very good)

Scene I, Acts I, II, III

Miles, miles – I needed more miles so booked my trip MCO-ORD-PHX; PHX-DFW-MCO on the return. The flight from MCO was great! An MD80, of course, but even so, it had the new seats and some of the best service I’ve had in a long time. But, back to the beginning. Using the AA dial-in to request my upgrades, I called several days in advance. Couldn’t fool the system, though, and had to deal with the 24 hour window. Here’s the weird part about AA – the 24 hour window is per segment (and it is 24 hours from your flight time). So at 12:01 PM on Monday, I was able to confirm the MCO-ORD leg. I couldn’t get a confirmation on ORD-PHX until 4:00 PM EST (since my flight left at 3:00 PM CST). All’s well that ends, though, and I was able to confirm both segments. Still, it seems silly that I can’t confirm my whole itinerary at once.

Back to the MD80. Seat 6E, which I really like on this plane. The closet is right across the aisle, so if the crew decides to put the A/C on frigid, it’s easy to grab your jacket. Got a choice of drinks on the ground (none of that oj or water tray) and was even allowed to finish it before we took off. BTW, AA stocks Chivas Regal on their flights – none of that JW rotgut. Into the air we went and a smoother flight I’ve never had from MCO. Nary a bump. My seat mate was a flight technician/pilot. He was very surprised that the FA asked him what his choice of meal was; so he then figured that I was an employee. (Yah, I get that all the time). Must’ve been the rare and unique “Hammertoad” tag on my briefcase. Anyway, my choice was the corned beef sandwich. The meat and cheese were great…the bread left a lot to be desired (soggy in some spots; hard in others). Salad was a pseudo-Caesar that was actually pretty good. Dessert was milk & cookies (I skipped the milk – didn’t want it to curdle). 10 minutes late into ORD because of ATC. Of course our gate was at the very end of the H concourse; connecting flight was in L. Nice walk. Not.

Quick trip outside to feed my nicotine habit and then hiked to L6. On my way, I saw signs advertising the Fox Sports bar at L8. Didn’t have time for a drink, but I did check it out and it looks impressive! They have DirecTV (as everybody should so’s they can watch the Cowboys every Sunday) and will be showing all the games each week. That will definitely be a factor when I choose airport connections in the future! Awesome idea. Alas, no smoking section.

The ORD-PHX leg was on a very tired, very old 757. Old seats with the right armrest cut out to make room for a phone. Not comfy at all. Ground service was the OJ & water tray. Perhaps my expectations had been raised too much from the previous MCO-ORD flight, but this flight was TERRIBLE. Best part about it was the warm nuts (which beats the heck out of the bagel chips in a sealed bag I got on the BA MCO-LGW flight). Seconds on the nuts were offered and accepted. The meal was a choice of pasta shells (out); Sea Bass or some kind of chicken part with sauce. I went for the Sea Bass and was pleasantly surprised. Portion was pretty ‘skimpy’ but what there was was tasty. The salad, OTOH, was nasty. Wilted lettuce and some other leaves and twigs that looked like they were plucked from around the tarmac. There was a movie, but the only screen was the little 12” overhead screen. I watched anyway (Runaway Bride). Pretty sappy. Too bad I don’t know how it ends since the FA’s decided to make that the first thing on their check-list that got checked off – 20 minutes before we started our descent! What is with that? Seems to happen more and more… The flight itself was very very very choppy. Not a cloud in the sky but I felt like I was on a roller coaster. Worst part was the shades were all drawn so I couldn’t see to tell how far we feel each time. On time arrival into PHX.

It’s been a few years since I was in the PHX airport. Last time I could’ve sworn I was walking down the halls with a cigarette hanging from my lip. Now all I saw was no-smoking signs – even in the bars. Gonna be a bummer if my flight is delayed on Friday. Made the long trek to the Budget counter and… once again my name did not appear on the Fastbreak list. So I wait. While waiting I hear one of the best sales pitches ever to a young girl that was renting a convertible. She wound up paying for the LW, CDW and whatever else; I think it came to an extra 17.90 per day. Plus she prepaid the gas and only had a 2 day rental. Free enterprise. Gotta love it. I was supposedly ‘upgraded’ to a Mercury Sable. I’d really hate to think what I was upgraded from. Off to the Buttes.

Found the hotel easily enough. It was the parking that was rough. I’m a self-sufficient guy, and I really don’t need anyone to park my car for me. Finally found a spot about ½ mile from the lobby. 642 stair steps later and I arrived at the desk. Reservation was totally hosed up. They had me down for a non-smoking room and then tried to get me to sign a liability agreement that said I would pay a 75.00 cleaning charge if I was found to have smoked in the room! Fuggetaboutit. Wound up in a 1st floor ‘smoking’ room. A bit of a misnomer. It’s an ashtray room; because that’s ed-zachary what it smells like. Even I, as a smoker, am disgusted. Leaving the window open isn’t helping. “Sorry sir, it’s all that we have available”. Hmmm. Maybe $75 isn’t such a high price to pay. The room itself is something like Motel 6 meets Gilligan’s Island. Very strange décor. Bathroom is very very very small; the shower even more so. Speaking of the shower, it had a leak. So I used my trusty vice-grips to fix it. Something fell out, too. Almost looked like one of those water-pressure regulator things. Oops. The rest of the hotel (i.e., common areas) are very nice. The pool area is amazing! Reminds me of the Grand Cypress in Orlando.

(Blessing or curse? I got the Blue Screen of Death while writing this; luckily(?) it recovered).

Stay tooned….

Cheers,

‘toad

One (negative) comment about the new AA seats - what's up with them? Or should I say down with them? I push the head rest up; it immediately comes down. So I either sit with my head plastered against the head rest after raising it or deal with the top of the head rest digging into the back of my neck. Anyone have any trix for making it stay? I'm thinking a wad of strategically placed chewing gum.

Do you notice the typo in the title which should (I guess) read, NOT long but very good! UBB does not permit title corrections!

Thanks Toad. JW red was never a favorite but the JW Black I always found palatible.

At The Buttes, where I visited but have never stayed, they could name it The Pool, since that's what everyone notices, enjoys and remembers. I like the jaccuzzi tubs built into the rocks.

Sorry about the room mixup, but you did at least get a great deal pricewise!

A couple of other miscellaneous observations at The Butts:

Phone charges are .75 for local calls and .95 for 800 numbers. Can't quite figure that out. Fine if they want to make it the same, but what's the deal with an extra .20? Just another way to jab the bidness traveller. At least there are no "over 30 minutes" surcharges.

I was knackered last night, so just ordered a pizza from room service. 1.5 hours later it still hadn't arrived (was quoted 45-60 minutes). Called to cancel and the RS manager was very apologetic and promised to send one over right away - gratis. Darn nice of him. It won't chang my 'rating' on the comment card, but it was a very classy way to handle the incident.

Speaking of room service charges: $2.00 delivery, plus tax, plus 18% gratuity. That's pretty standard these days but I still don't like it and can't quite figure out how they get away with it. I wonder what the charge would be if I offered to pick it up?

'eyyy, 'toad, what a great trip report!! Entertaining as all get-out.

The blue seats with the falling headrests...about 1/3 of them seem to have this problem, even on brand new just-delivered planes/seats.

I have noticed that on more AA flights they offer drinks pre-takoff. For a while, they were getting away with champagne/water/juice but mostly now I've been offered whatever I wanted (although if you asked for a drink they'd generally get it for you.)

The nice thing about AA is that I have so far always gotten an upgrade, even with last minute travel. Only exception was after my flight was cancelled, but they got me a coach ticket on a sold-out flight so I can't complain...I'd rather get there coach than not get their on first.

Great report, Hammertoad. I used to stay at the Buttes back when the Mariners trained next door, but even then it had started to go downhill. Those jacuzzis are unbeatable, though, and Sunday brunch at the Top of the Rock is wonderful.

The Curse of the Single, Smoking Diner

Mouth watering all day, I looked forward to dining (feasting, akshully) at the Top o' the Rock. Waited until 9:00 PM (they close at 10) to go so as to hopefully procure a decent table with a view. Arrived and the place was maybe 1/2 full. I checked in and asked for a smoking booth; table if booth not available. "I'm sorry, sir. We aren't offering a smoking section tonight." Why not, I ask? "Well, nobody else is smoking and we don't want to upset them." Oh, I'm sorry, I say. I didn't realise this was a non-smoking restaurant. "No, we allow smoking. Just not tonight." Shocked, stunned and amazed I just looked at her like a deer caught on I-80 at night. I was told the same menu was available in the bar, should I wish to dine there. Having spent a goodly portion of the previous night in said bar, I declined the offer.

So, here I sit; nursing my petty or not-so-petty grudge and watching my bottle of Dewar's dwindle. Yes, I started early, thus eliminating the possibility of making a run to Ruth's Chris.

So, beware, fellow smokers (both of you) that travel to PHX. If you want a decent room that doesn't smell like the bottom of your ashtray on Saturday morning and also has a decent restaurant - stay away from The Butts.

Cheers,

'toad

The word "commiserate" comes to mind. Sorry Toad! As a nonsmoker, I respect your right to smoke. Just wondered whether they asked at the time of reservation if you wanted smoking or non smoking section?

Still, it seems silly that I can’t confirm my whole [upgraded] itinerary at once. But if you could, it would have given you an AAdvantage over the people just flying ORD-PHX.

Back when United let you confirm the upgrade three calendar days ahead (i.e., at midnight, without regard to actual flight time) I used to call at 9:00pm San Francisco time, grateful that I could snatch the upgrade without staying up until midnight like the east coast types would have to.

FOUR PAWS UP and a bottle of Devars for your Mr. Toad (I don't think I ever had Devars. Or this J-W stuff, is that Diet Pepsi?) Maybe one of my Flyertalk friends can tell me if I did.

SOrry your trip was hit or miss, especially since you didn't get your steak and smoke. When you make a reservation -- make sure you emphasize that you want a SMOKING session.

I 'mostly" don't smoke (unless tempted by a great cigar with a good buddy from Flyertalk) but I respect one's right to do so.

FYI for Ruth's Toad: ALWAYS MAKE RESERVATIONS OR YOU END UP WAITING 1-2 HOURS (YES HOURS) FOR A TABLE. I do believe they have cigar smoking sections (except Maui where you smoke at the bar or outside where the first ever meeting of the F-T Party Cats and Kitties met over Cigars and this great cogniac that complemented the Cubano!)

When you come to NYC I'llmake sure to ask for a smoking section.

For all of you Ruth's Chris Steakhouse fans, are you listening brudder Catdude, I have enjoyed a lot of great meals eating at the bar while chatting with the bartenders, and enjoying the martini's and a few glasses of wine.

the bar is THE best place for me eating alone - if I want conversation and good/fast service - if I have to do some work, it must be a table. In most cases it is the bar I am looking and asking for.

OH! I wasn't alone at the Maui Ruth's Chris.

I had FLyertalkers other sweethearts, Onefreeman and Raeban, the always fun and beautiful wingless (watch it Arturo!) and my BIG BRUDDAR PremEx.

But I'll give the bar a try sometime. I'm just afraid fo falling off the barstool after stuffing myself with steak and PEPSI.

OMNI: I had a wonderful dinner Wednesday at the Weehawken Ruth's Chris with my lawyer buddy Mark (I treated him for his birthday; he's returnign the favor later for mine!) and he told me if I ever end up alone at Ruth's to sit at the bar. There's this very cute bartender there... Lisa, who my buddy Mark (the lawyer not the nice guy from Austin or my Big BRUDDAR or myself) introduced me to.

SO with the right bartender (that Ruth's Chris bartender, the bartenders at the W N.Y) I may not mind dining alone at the bar http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
