Well, this next part of my 100K times 2 trip was a real treat. I had always wanted to try Singapore Airlines and I finally did. The first class on SQ was everything that everyone had been telling me about. First of all, the JFK Lufthansa Senator Lounge was quite an archetects delight. Upon entering the lounge I was struck by the gorgeous ceilings and walls. SQ does not have their own lounge at JFK and therefore the LH lounge was used. The food was quite a pleasant suprise. LH had many different appetizers, including, potato leek soup, smoked salmon, mini sandwiches, and of course the open bar with excellent vintage wines and champagnes. Upon leaving the lounge to go to the gate, the first class passengers had their own security clearance section, where we could pass through security very easily. Upon arrival at the gate, the JFK personnel were quite friendly.
Upon boarding the SQ 747-400 I was struck with the fact that the Connelly leather sleeper seats looked extremely worn. However, this was the last "negative" impression of SQ that I had that evening. I sat down in this sleeper seat that was extraordinarily comfortable, and I then was offered a choice of champagnes, either Dom Perignon or Krug. This was followed by presentation of a menu and wine list in a leather covered menu holder. The FA just could not do enough for me. What really struck me when I was having a glass of bubbly,I noticed that the video screen looked a full size TV with 14 inches of viewing space. Also remarkable was that the meal tray was hidden under the TV and did not some out of the armrest. Personal stationary was under the meal tray. Upon take off, I decided on the following menu. Caviar, smoked salmon and asparagus terrine, green pea soup, caesar salad and ginger shrimp. I had a bit of blue cheese and a pear followed by a chocolate tart, chocolate ice cream and mango sauce, with some espresso.
Although about one half of the cabin decided to change into their Givenchy purple sleeping suits, I decided to bring the suit home to my 15 year old daughter. I immediately turned on the "Kris World" entertainment monitor, but was saddened to see that it was not interactive. The movies were scheduled to start and stop according to a 2 hour and 15 minute schedule, which means that if I had to use the restroom, I could not stop the movie ( saw Wild Wild West and BIg Daddy). I became an addict to the video program and although I finally slept a bit, I thouroughly enjoyed the video and audio on this flight. Also, if one wanted to sleep a longer time, the FA actually made up your sleeper seat into a bed with comforter, sheets, and a large pillow. Great service. Breakfast was continental with the usual array of breads and juices.
Landed in Frankfurt after a short 6 hours and 25 minutes. I had to change to Iberia to get to Barcelona. This was difficult as the Iberia terminal and the SQ terminal are not close to each other. Took the sky shuttle to Iberia where I had to recheck in at the Iberia counter to make sure that my Aadvantage number was put in correctly. Mercifully, it was. Then to the business class lounge of Air France which Iberia shares space with. Quite boring, but it sufficed. IB flight 4513 to BCN took off 45 minutes late. It was an A320. Business class was simply coach with 2 people occupying the three across seating. The service on this flight included a lunch, with menus handed out during take-off. LUnch included shrimp with cocktail sauce, a choice of beef or stuffed filet of sole, and a fresh fruit desert. Quite a service for a 1 hour and 45 minute flight. In flight video presentation was also made . Very nice service. Next report will be made shortly.......
