I got a great deal on a flight to go and visit a friend who is studying at UC Santa Cruz so I took it $425.
I was booked on the 12:15 flight from BOS-PWM. As usual it was about half full, boarding was on time for a change. I cannot remember the last time I took a flight out of Portland that was on time. Got to the relocated Business Express arrivals now in terminal B where the Delta Shuttle used to be. I headed to the Admirals Club for a drink and to wait until my flight was called. I had gotten upgraded 72 hours before have to love Platinum. The Admirals Club was very empty. I had to return a paper ticket so I headed to the ticket counter as I had time to kill before my 3:15 departure. The ticket caused a great deal of confusion as it was a fully refundable fare but booked in K because that is what AA does for old QQ routes. Well after fifteen minutes of conversation between four PSAs I got my refund. I head back to the AC to pick up bags. I love that they ask have you left your bags unattended at the AC when you check in and you have to answer no, yet they make provisions for you to leave them out of sight. I guess bad things do not happen to people who pay club dues.
I head over to the gate to board. Of course because I am there on time the flight is still being cleaned. Well ten minutes of waiting around and they start boarding which is orderly. I board and store all three bags without a problem. Busness is half full on a 767-200. It is outfitted for International which means 50 inch pitch, but in the latest AAdvantage Newsletter they said that there would be power ports, but not on this plane. I was less then pleased with that as I had some work to get to. My jacket was taken quickly and juice was served. The takeoff wait was short for Boston about fifteen minutes.
The flight service was great. Very few times in Busness on AA is service great acceptable yes great no. Bev came around and not only introduced herself, but asked for what we would like to be called. The menus were passed out on the ground and drink orders taken. I was sitted in 8D the best seat on AA in Busness as you get served second, no bulkhead, and are far enough from the bathrooms. It was a dinner flight started with mixed nuts, salad with sliced salmon and Thai pasta, then for the main a choice of filet mignon, balsamic marinade chicken, smoked salmon with mixed greens. I had the filet. The salmon starter was surprisingly tasty and the steak for a change was not overdone. The service was as good as it gets. It may have been that I was so tired and I enjoyed being waited on since I had not slept the night before finishing up loose ends, but it was quite good. The desert is what I liked it was about the trip, it was Haagen-Dazs, but coffee and oh soo good it hit the spot. I ate it so quickly that I was offered another which I happly accepted. Then I turned my attention to the International movie of the month which is such a great idea as I finally get to see movies that I would rent at home. It was Life is Beautiful, a real heart renching movie with a different twist on Jews in WWII. After the movie a quick nap as the flying time was long 5:47 minutes. I got an hour of sleep before being woken up by Bev with two cokkies and a couple glasses of milk saying that she thought I would enjoy the extra one. I was very impressed by her service. When I got up once she was appoligetic for making me get up and knew exactly what I was drinking.
I arrived at SFO called my car rental company and they brought the car around to meet me outside the departures level. Off I went in my Altima towards Santa Cruz. The traffic was less then great going through the hills.
Spent Saturday night in the Stanford Court in San Fran. Not the nicest hotel, but short notice and served the purpose.
It was a great weekend. I was scheduled on the 7:30 flight out of SFO-BOS. Which meant that I had to leave Santa Cruz at 4am to make sure that I had some buffer time to return the rental car. I made it to the airport by 6am after returning the car. This flight was the complete opposite of the outbond flight it was terrible at best. The service is really what makes a nice flight. This 767-200 had the new blue seats that AA is installing I have been on the 777 with them and a 767-300 out of JFK-LHR and I really like the new ones. It was nice to fly the old and new seats in one weekend for comparison. The new are very comfortable. The flight was also about half full. While we were waiting for takeoff they came around with menus. The only problem which I mentioned to the FA as she was handing them out was that they were for First not Busness. The FAs then go around snatching the menus from passengers. There were no Busness menus to be had on the flight. The food was fine I am not a fan of breakfast. The fruit was not good at old a little to old. I had the Turkey Quich which was very nice with a baggle and cream cheese. The service was short at best, everytime I asked for soemthing there was a forced smile, the service was not as natural as the outbond. Well I sleep like a baby in the new seats and there was nobody next to me which always helps. It is funny when I started to fly busness I was happy to be there, then it got old, so first class became a treat and exciting now if in busness I am not comfortable without a seat next to me, oh well just spoiled. I slept for two hours, missing a movie I really wanted to see the Dinner Game. I awoke and they were serving the snack of cheese, crackers and wine. I think I would have preferred the coach snack of a sandwich and chips. I ate it and was felt better. Then the cokkies all three of them and milk. It reminds me of being a little kid and I so enjoy the feeling. Landing was ontime. I head to the BOS AC and was not happy at how full it was. Checked on my flight to PWM, the agent said that it was ontime. I asked her to check the time that last flight had left she got confused and angry at me. I gave up on trying to find out the information as my ears were still stuffed from the flight. I took a sit and killed an hour reading before heading over to the gate for the flight. I arrived and the flight had been postponded thirty minutes. Now I have to wait in the terminal for the flight because of that lady. Find a nice view of the runway and continue to read. This is when I start to question the point of not driving down to Boston to get flights. The flight leaves an hour late and arrives in PWM an hour late as well. I go get my car out of the long term parking which is a short walk away and head back home. Not the best way to return after such a good weekend, but feel better for the weekend.
