Trip Reports - Advice in Dehli, DEL to FRA

LH to FRA departs 0320. This makes for a long wait, having checked out of hotel mid day. Can anyone brief me on the drill there?

Does LH have any special facilities such as Senator L for F passengers? Is there anything to do in the wee hours other than howl at the moon? Booze and girls as a way to use up time and money don't interest me; Lipitor reason for former, age latter.

at DEL (my last visit oct-98, next nov-99) you absolutely must check-in at least two hours before scheduled flight departure. LH gives you a voucher (includes some free drinks) for free lounge-access to either the Sheraton lounge (under average standard) or the Thai lounge (above average).

Before checking in your bags they must pass security screening - about 50 feet away from LH's check-in gates.

Nothing really worth seeing/staying/shopping/eating at the airport: have the batteries of your laptop charged before and write more for us .... and be prepared to be delayed, without informations, for hours (in my case last year, the military did close the airport for departures because of air manouevers more that 4 hours - without any advanced warning. The passengers found out that reason, only after boarding through the captain).

and have the airport departure tax ready in local currency

Depending on where you are staying you could probably extend your check out for a few hours. Aside from that there probably isn't much to see or do that late at night.

Rudi is right about the 2 hour check in, security checks, and unannounced delays. Also, if you're there in December the chances of fog delays are VERY high. This was one of the reasons UA cancelled there flights. Flights coul dbe delayed upto 12 - 16 hours for days at a time.

Re. Departure Tax - some airlines now charge the tax in advance and if you're flying on of them don't buy the tax again.

Based on these very helpful replies, I think I will pass Delhi and use the time elsewhere. I just wanted to see the Taj but I'm sure I can rent a video movie and do almost as well without the difficulties.
