Hertz - Is liability insurance included in a UK rental?

I'm told it is illegal to drive a rental car without liability insurance in the UK. Is this automatically included in the price of the rental? Examining a recent rental form it is not spcecifically called out as a line item.

Colision, for example, is a line item that can be accepted or declined.

Hi Birdstrike,

It is a mandatory requirement to have 3rd party liability insurance in the UK, so this will be included in base rental. Anything above will be chargable unless included in a package price.

BTW your handle's scary!

And more importantly ( as far as it relates to Hertz ) it is illegal to allow someone to drive your car unless you have ensured that they have at least 3rd party insurance.

Thanks folks!

I will give Hertz a call and see how I need to work this. If they can handle it all inthe UK it will take a load off my mind.

If you haven't already got an answer, don't worry. It's all included in the rental.

Some of my friends in central London don't own a car (parking/congestion charge/traffic) so clearly don't have car insurance. They just rent a car for the few days a month they need/want one. All the liability insurance is included.

Something that might come as a bit of a shock though is that the CDW generally comes with a GBP500 (USD 850) excess!

More like $900 at the moment. This can be reduced down by purchasing the optional Super CDW. Pretty similar to Australia in that respect

Hertz is covered if you do damage... However you may still be dinged the total on the card unless you have the CDW...

On my rentals the CDW is ALWAYS broken down seperatly. Are some of you implying the CDW is part of the base rate or only 3rd party is included as required by law?

In Australia ( and I believe UK ) there is a level of CDW included in the base rental price. In Oz, this limits your liability to around AUD2000 to AUD2500 unless you do something stupid and invalidate the CDW at which point you are liable up to the full cost of the car ( which can be AUD45000+) . There is an optional purchase of Super CDW which reduces the liability further to AUD300 )

A fair number of UK rental rates are fully inclusive of super CDW such as the weekend rates.

As an aside; If your gold profile states that you do not take optional CDW , then the cheap weekend rates will not be offered to you when logged in. For UK rentals, especially at weekends, it is a good idea to check for rates without logging in.

I never rent from Hertz (even though Gold) in UK costs to much.
I rent from British Car Rentals.
Also much, much cheaper if you can rent off airport.

Thanks for the BCR plug, but....

Hertz offers such a good consistent service in the UK, USA and Europe - I wouldn't even think of switching to any other company!
