I recently had 2 issues in PHL, but the funny one (what else can you call it), was to be given a Ford Tarus with a Sun Roof and being told that it was an UPGRADE. ???
By the way I am a Presidents Club. . .

I think the Taurus w/ sunroof is a class YF...technically, an upgrade (weak) from an F. What class did you rent?

It amazes me that rental agents can honestly say that with a straight face. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif

I rented a full size car.
Since I wasn't doing much driving I really didn't care what I got as long as the car is clean, but to be told that a Taurus with a Sun Roof is an upgrade really boggles me.
Truly makes me speechless!

It has been mentioned many times on this forum that a YF is technically NOT an upgrade and this has been put in writing by the customer service group at Hertz. It is not an upgrade from F that is, however it would be an upgrade from Midsize. I have had this mentioned to me on at least 2 occasions and pushed back to the agent. While they have been told this is an upgrade by the site management a quick call to Hertz CS certainly does the trick.
In the one case where I was unable to convince the desk agent after hours I had them downgrade the reservation to Midsize on the spot and at least saved the $$$ on the reservation at the time. When I returned the car I talked to the manager and they apologized for the confusion while promising to make the policy clear to the staff for future reference.
Cheers!

Y cars are not necessarilly upgrades, they're just different. One time I had an A class reserved at BWI, just wanting cheap transportation for the weekend and I received a fabulous YB ... a Nissan Sentra.
The Y designator just means the car is different than the standard cars in the class, not necessarilly better.

Don't feel too bad.
I booked a Premium at BUF and received a YF Taurus SES (with leather and a sunroof).
Since I had a lot of driving, the Taurus actually worked better (saved a mint in fuel vs. the V8 in the Premium) so I didn't complain.
A "Y" car is just a nicer car within a class and is not a true "upgrade" per status/cert purposes. Usually there is an extra charge for these cars (I paid $15 to get a YC Nissan Altima), but sometimes you get them for free (I often score a YG Avalon XLS at SEA when booking premium).

Picked up a special Taurus yesterday in JFK. WOW was I impressed http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
For the record I reserved a full size car again.
The best was OAK trying to sell me a $10 upgrade from a F Taurus to a YF Century. Sorry, but a Century is NOT an upgrade over a Taurus.

Sorry it came across like that, it certainly wasn't meant to be presented in that manner.

I rented a Full Size car for today and found a Toyota Camry in my spot. Good Grief. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/rolleyes.gif This is an upgrade? I went back to the counter and requested another car, not that a Camry is not a good car but I have had enough of the pathetic attempts Hertz has called upgrades lately. I was finally offered a Volvo S80 when there were plenty of Volvos, Jags and Lincoln LS cars available. If this is the service I can expect for PC this year then I want nothing to do with this program. I would rather rent a Taurus and get a Taurus then have my expectation/anticipation jerked around.

I am 5* (not quite enough for PC last year) and my experience has been offered upgrades to YF and when pressed a S80; sometimes free, sometimes a charge. If what is posted in this thread is not just happening at a few cities, then it sounds like PC got downgraded to 5*
