Can somebody please tell me if I have this right. Rental will be for only 2 days in Munich on a VW golf. I may take the car to Austria, but that doesn't seem to be a problem.
Damage to my own car: This should be covered by my Visa Platinum. See http://www.usa.visa.com/personal/cards/benefits/auto_rental_insurance.html?it=il_/personal/cards/card_benefits.html Since my US auto insurance will not cover anything abroad, visa becomes primary coverage. Does visa coverage have zero deductible. It is my understanding that I should not get CDW or LDW or theft insurance becuase aside from wasting money it negates visa coverage and leaves me with a deductible of several hundred euros.
Damage to another person's car or body:
My understanding is that this is not covered by credit card or my american car insurance. I have noticed in the US that there is generally an option to buy increaded liability insurance but that option does not exist in Europe. I believe that this is because US rentals only provide several thousand dollars in liability insurance whereas germany rental provide several million euros. Therefore no additional insurance is needed in germany. On top of this mandatory liability insurance included with german rentals, I also understand that my umrella policy on my insurance will kick in.
So in conclusion it seems that if I use my visa platinum card and decline all extra insurance offered by car provider, I will be just fine. Can someone please help me confirm all this.
