I rented from DCA to NYC and also got the NEVERLOST. However the GPS was acting funny althrough the trip. It always said ACQUIRING GPS ..... thru out the trip. Even the satellites it was "tuned" to was showing 0 count. The map it showed was somewhere in Canada !! was i using it wrongly? It only prompted me to give destination ...i assume it will find current location automatically....

Perhaps the smoke condition the Northeast has been experiencing (from Quebec forest fires) made it difficult to find a satellite?
One issue with NeverLost is you need to have the correct maps selected. If you don't then it won't understand where you are.

Options --> Map Selection --> Either US East or West....approximately where the Mississippi splits the US. If you're on the wrong map, the unit will usually shut itself down and reset to the correct map.

I use the Neverlost system on every rental I make. I have found that on occasion it does act quirky. Here are my observations:
When you first turn the system on, it searches for GPS satellites overhead. I believe it must have at least 3 locked before it will accurately pinpoint your location. Since GPS satellites are not stationary, but constantly circling the globe, you may not get a lock at all for a few minutes. If you start driving around BEFORE it locks any it attempts to position you based on the last known location, direction of travel, and speed. This seems to be spotty at best. If I notice a unit doing this, I usually wait until I get a signal lock before driving out of the lot. I have found that if I let it lock on before I begin driving, the system works perfect.
