I have booked with Hertz for a family trip to Nova Scotia in August, picking up the car at BOS.....

Question is, I always waive the CDW (covered by AMEX, not my own insurance, as I live outside the USA), but I have been told I need to show evidence of insurance when I cross the border to Canada.....will my AMEX cover be sufficient or do I have to shell out for the CDW etc ?

Thx

I think it is unlikely that you will have to show proof of insurance going across the border, but is, of course, possible. However, Canada (as well as all of the US states) couldn't care less about the car (the only thing that your Amex and the CDW cover). They are interested in your liability coverage. The car rental company, depending on state, may or may not be required to provide some minimum level of liabilty coverage (they probably are) and this coverage may or may not apply in Canada. Your personal auto insurance (if you have any) should cover you in Canada, however it is best to check with Hertz and your insurance company.

Crossed the border about a million times and no one has ever asked about insurance. Heck, the majority of the time they don't even ask for ID. Dudster is right, best to check with Amex and your normal insurance company to make sure your liability is covered. If you get pulled over for any reason, the cops will ask. You may just want to play it safe and take Hertz's expensive coverage.

Hertz on the other hand may have a problem with you taking the car to Canada, make sure you disclose that you're headed to NS before you leave the country with the car.

Have a great time, the Atlantic provinces are awesome.

A few months ago I rent a Hertz car in Seattle and drove to Vancouver. I declined CDW and supplmental liability coverage from Hertz. In the contract it said Hertz minimum liability coverage will kick in if the renter doesn't have a liability coverage. I don't have a car so I don't have autoinsurance. When crossed the border, the immigration officer didn't ask anthing about the car. I did check before pick-up with Hertz to make sure I can drive the car in Vancouver under above mentioned insurance condition.

Different province got different regulation though. So I am not sure my case will apply to your trip from BOS to Canada. Better check with Hertz and/or your autoinsurance company.
