I've been trying to put together a list of discount numbers (publicly available) that are available for use at the major car rental firms. This way I can check around and compare rates. I have found that different partners provide different discounts depending on date, location, unpublished promotions, etc. Here is what I have for Avis:

Partner AWD #
Alaska Air K197800
Starwood K817200
HHonors K851000
Inside Flyer A205700

Your additions are welcome. Thanks.

AWD B335100 British Airways is about the best I came across. Also, you can get 500 British Airways miles per rental without a qualifying flight and at every location, not only airports.

In my experience, AAA is almost always cheaper than any of these others. You are supposed to be a member, and each state has its own discount code. It's worth the $40/year for the hotel and car discounts to me even if I never need a jump start!

AAA has discounts with Avis? I'm a AAA member and am only aware of discounts with Hertz.

Costco: (Call 800)239-7075 and give ID#A108325 (up to 25% off). In addition to the discount, if you have Costco discount coupons (free day, $15 off or free upgrade), one can be used in addition to the 25% off. A really good deal. I have never been asked to show my Costco membership card either and a good thing since I rarely carry it.

Two other perks.....you receive unlimited miles and no charge for additional drivers.

using the avis website, most of the airline and hotel codes above returned the exact same price for a three day weekend rental out of newark - about $195.

this price was $33 higher than the price given when i used my company's corporate AWD number. it usually doesn't work that way - the corporate rate is almost always higher on the weekend

elsewhere on the site, avis offers a code (K257200) to get 10% off all internet bookings, but when you enter that code it gives you a rate of $224 for the same 3 days!

when booking at the avis site, don't overlook the "avis deals" section. there you'll find a selection of cities, each offering codes for weekly and/or weekend rates at great savings: the 3-day newark rate came out to be about $120.

(all rates above are without taxes or added fees.)
