thanks to excellent info from FT, I booked 3 rentals in HI using rate code 6T. I heard that this discount is based on some local tourism booklet, so I am concerned that the agent will ask for a paper coupon. Has anyone rented from Alamo with this rate code recently? Does it require a paper coupon to be presented at check-in? Thanks in advance!

I've used this code many, many times including most recently, 3 weeks ago.

No. Nothing is required other than the knowledge of the code and using it when you make your reservations. The code is in an advertisement in all those "This Week In Maui" type booklets and other tourist rags on racks all over the islands. It is not a "coupon" and you won't need anything or be asked for anything when you pick-up your rental.

It's simple, worry free and hassle free, and you aren't doing anything at all shady by using it.

For what it's worth, I just made a reservation at HNL for 1 week + 1 day for a full size in April. It was $20 less without any code than when I put in 6T.

If you rent weekly use the internet special for a week. I use 6t for two days compact car rental in HNL while I use the travelzoo.com. it is $51.00. use 6t is $49.00. Thanks.

I just used the rate code and save $130 for a week on a convertible over the Costco rate that I already had!

Need to rent for a couple days next week, Wednesday Oct 22, (arrive 5pm) Thurs Oct 23, Fri Oct 24 (fly out 2pm) - is that '2' days or '3' days for rental companies - never remember for sure how they compute/count "days"?

How many "days" really counts for us as we need to take EVERY kind of insurance offered (3 or 4 different types IIRC) being non Americans, and that always runs FAR more per day than the car rental. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/mad.gif

Will 6T via Alamo work out lower than same days via a Travelzoo type agency?

Oz,

Alamo.com is very easy to work with to determine which would be better. This includes the taxes, fees, extra drivers, etc.

Update - be careful not to ASSUME 6T works for all places.

Just booked Hilo 2 days from Oct 22

WITHOUT 6T i.e. vanilla booking was $48

WITH 6T for same car was $73.73.

That ADDED over 50%!!!

Was higher on all car size categories too.

I used 6T on three Hawaii Island pickups last week, and it worked fine, although it always pays to check this rate code against regular internet rates and other rate codes to find the lowest price, as OZSTAMPS has discovered.

Alamo locations in Hawaii are notorious for lines...long and slow ones. I signed up for Quicksilver service before leaving, and found not only the time to pickup my car reduced to just a few moments, but the level of service and "friendliness" I received was also quite good. When I opened the door to my SUV at Kona airport and found the floor "moving" with little buggies, I went back to the office and agent immediately recognized me as just taking a car from her, asked me what's wrong, then when I requested a convertible instead, swapped me out to a Sebring with the same rate and a big Hawaiian smile http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I got some looks at HNL from the folks in line, when I strolled into the building, popped my credit card into the Quicksilver machine, and walked out 30 seconds later with my car receipt http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif If you don't have Quicksilver, or don't want to go through the routine to sign up for it, be prepared to spend some time hanging out in line. Don't forget to get the Alamo drive guides - they are excellent sources of maps, directions and discount coupons.

I just booked 12 days in a compact car starting on October 25 in Maui. Rate code "6T" gave me a basic cost of $421. Rate code "QV" gave me a basic cost of $298.
"QV" is the compact car weekly internet rate on alamo.com

Remember based on my experience with 6T to TRY a quote using AUSTRALIA as residence after you get first quote. In my case it really lowered the rates. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

Every time I have rented from Alamo at HNL, I say "never do that again" - even with Quicksilver it has never been great, and their off-airport location is a pain if you are in a hurry. Don't know about neighbor island locations. Anyone with recent experience at HNL - I need to book a car in a couple weeks.

The 'line' at Hilo was us last week. Both ways.

Took 5 mins each time. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

I remember at Maui it was hours though.

Quicksilver made a huge difference for me a few weeks ago. HNL had a big line that would have cost me easily 45 minutes to an hour...Quicksilver made it happen in under 1 minute.

I don't know about Hilo, but Kona only had a Quicksilver "desk" not a machine...but that cut my wait down considerdably. Maui has a Quicksilver desk outside the terminal...you are suppose to check in there, get your keys, then hop on the bus and then you can get right out to your car from there. If there is a problem with the car, then you can walk in the building and there is a Quicksilver desk available for service.

The HNL location is pretty bad, and inconvenient, but my three rentals with Alamo using Quicksilver were a breeze...without that card, expect to spend quite a bit of time in line.

I tried to use code 6T to get a minivan for a 2 week rental. With code 6T it did not even offer a minivan as being available (although it did for a trip in November). There are minivans there, but not with this code...

Does anyone have other suggestions of good codes to use?

David

Thanks. I did see that, but unfortunately, it expires in May. I am looking for a rental in June/July. Any other suggestion?

Thanks!

David
