How far in advance do you recommend that I rent an SUV for Kona? The specials seem to limit your advance booking, but SUV's are popular and I do not want to be without one due to no availability.
Last year I was able to rent a jeep wrangler a couple of weeks prior to my arrival, but I did encounter difficulty tracking down a 4WD vehicle.
My travel is in March 2004.
On the topic of SUVs on Kona, I just booked one for the 4th of July weekend with Alamo. Any ideas what models they have?
We had a Chevy Blazer in May, was nice. But if you follow the terms of the rental agreement(paved roads only), you do not need the 4WD feature. However, they are nice for the space. Next time, we'll book an Interm. or Full.
Are all of the full size SUV's (Chevy Blazer or similar, according to their website) from Alamo at Kona 4WD?

We rented a Chevy Blazer from Alamo in Kona, and it was a 4 wheel drive. You need 4WD for the Waipi'o Valley Road, and there is a 2 wheel drive wreck at the bottom to serve notice. Some of the "Jeep roads" leading to the green sand beaches also require a 4WD. They advise a 4WD to go to the summit of Mauna Kea, but we saw several 2WD passenger cars up there and the roads seem to be well maintained even though they are dirt roads. Any other questions, feel free to email me directly.

Try the 6T code for Alamo, I noticed it didn't just lower the convertible rate, but also some SUV & minivan rates too.
