Re: Jury duty:

You need to go ALWAYS on the Friday before a Monday holiday (or a Thursday before a Monday holiday if they don't empanel juries on a Friday, like in DC). Think Fridays before Presidents' Days, Columbus Days, Memorial Days, etc. I went today in DC and was dismissed in 2 hours. Don't tell anyone else.

I like my trick better. After the defense and prosecution attorneys spoke to the pool and asked if we had any questions, I just put up my hand in the dumbest voice I could and said, "Uh... so the defendent... he's the guilty one?".

Defense attorneys wanted the whole pool thrown out after that was said.

Don't make up excuses for getting out of serving on a jury. It is important that smart and capable people serve on juries rather than just the people who don't believe that they are too important to waste their time on it.

I hope the proponents of jury avoidance strategies never have to sit in the defendants' chair being judged by their peers... peers whose idea of reading is the "Weekly World News."

Hardly! If what you're suggesting is the case, the vast majority of defendants would exercise their right to waive the jury and have a trial by judge.

You may or may not be in the minority but you're assuming people try to avoid jury duty out of a sense of self importance rather than a matter of principle. Have you considered people might not want to participate because they believe the peer jury system is fundamentally flawed?

OK, everybody who suggested a jury avoidance strategy who also believes that the peer jury system is flawed please raise their hand!

I admit that I don't think about the group you describe because I have yet to meet anyone in that group. Most everyone I meet in the jury pool is trying their best to get out of jury duty because it's too much of an inconvenience to their schedule and their bosses are not sympathetic to the need for good jurors.

It's even gotten to the point where we were instructed by the judge not to look too relieved if we were excused during the impanelment process.

It wasn't that bad an ordeal, although I have to say that I'm glad I didn't have to sit on this jury. Any ETA on Lurker's return?

Someone posted on another thread that William's tentative return was set for May 10, 2004.

While FMLA can be used to care for sick/ill family member(s), it's also used to spend time with a newborn. I get the impression that everybody assumed that he's going through something other than a newborn(which it may or may not be). Far be it for us to get into his personal business, anyway. I'm just pointing out that his FMLA may not be a 'bad' thing.

FMLA is partially or fully unpaid so thats not always a good thing.

Unless Starwood has a more lenient policy, the family medical leave act in no way requires paid leave. The employee uses his/her vacation time and sick time, the FMLA runs concurrently with this time off. The remainder of the time off is unpaid.

William's return to work/FT has been delayed. He is hoping to return during the last week in May.

Wow-- I've been so busy myself (and away from this forum) that I missed the fact that Lurker was away.

Well, I'm not that much of a world-wide traveler, but The Westin Riverwalk knows me pretty well. That hotel is almost home away from home for me and Mrs. Starwood Lurker. The W New Orleans on Poydras also knows me and treated us like royalty the last time we were there (too long ago). And, although I've never stayed at the W FQ, my reputation preceeds me. ;)

Of the other properties I've stayed at, I'm not sure if they really care or not other than the fact that I am a guest for however long that may be. They know I work for Starwood because I give them the letter of introduction at check-in. Being the Starwood Lurker rarely comes up as a part of the check-in process because I use my title - Customer Service Coordinator -and, like I said, I don't usually say anything about it myself. After all, just getting to stay in a really nice hotel at a terrific rate and half-off food & beverage is a pretty nice benefit in and of itself.

FS does, RC does and the spg site leaves a lot to be desired from an ease of finding promotions perspective. One has to actually check each brand site to find most of the promotions available.

Going to have to plead ignorance on this one. I know SPG sends promotional offers out to members via e-statements on a monthly basis that include offers at all brands. Could it be that FS and RC do not have multiple brands to support? Maybe. It could also be that Starwood wants you to get this information from the branded web sites instead of via email, but that is only a guess.
