Hey all,
I was wondering if someone could advise me on whether I will have trouble as an 18 year old checking into a NYC Sheraton tomorrow for one night?

What are the official rules on such things?

Thanks!

You can usually get in as an 18 year old as I've done so to numerous starwoods in the past year. even the Westin in Las Vegas allows you to if you have a corporate contract with them (I had to ask as well because I had business done there).

I'd be happy to check you in (if I can change the res to my name) and get stay credits and points; if you don't mind getting an upgraded room. I'm platinum. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

It depends upon the individual hotel policy. In this case, I called the Sheraton New York Hotel & Towers and asked them. They said as long as the person checking in has an id of some kind - drivers license preferred - 18 and above checking in is okay. They do have a 21 or over alcohol policy, however.

Since 18 years is the legal age to enter into a binding contract in the United States, if any hotel were to retract an offer made to the general public by refusing to consummate the contract, there may be legal problems.

Now if the Terms and Conditions of the offer contain minimum age restrictions, as in car rental contracts, that would be another matter.

Minors ARE responsible for contracts which involve the "necesities of life". This is because otherwise they would have trouble getting people to sell them food, for example. Whether the shelter of a fancy hotel room is a necesity of life is debatable.

This is misleading, as it depends on the type of contract and the state. Age of majority for contracting can be between 12-21.

However - interestingly enough, some states have found even that illegal. NY being one case - any rental agencies that operate in that state are required to rent to persons down to 18 years of age - albiet with additional fees, but a person between 18-21 is still allowed to rent a car there.

And remember, 18 year olds can drink outside the USA in certain countries.

William,
Is the 18 yr. restriction also the case for the Newark Airport location? My daughter will be there in a matter of days and I had assumed 18 was fine everywhere.

The hotel says that guests must be 21 or older to check-in at the Sheraton Newark Airport Hotel.
