I am planning a family oriented July trip to San Diego. Any upgrade information and club level information would be appreciated. Also, how about the St. Regis Dana Point? Any upgrade experience for Platinums? It appears that the San Diego Suites would be a very poor choice, based on current postings.

PLATMAN,

Spent last Saturday (on pts) at the Sheraton east Marina and was upgrade to a nice executive suite (approx 900sqft) on the club floor. It had one basic room(as club rooms go) and the connecting room that had a murphy bed a dinner room table for six, a sitting area with two couches and a bar area-and a course a bath room! The property has a excellent view of the pacific ocean and marina. The west Sheraton have the bigger standard rooms however I'm not sure how the suites compare. It is centrally located-just 5 minutes from downtown, seaport village and 15-20 minutes from the zoo, balboa park, sea world, mission bay and old town to name a few.

There is also the new W downtown-I have not stayed there (you can find threads on it though) but, I hear it's off the hook!

Hope that helps some!

P.S. If you stay at the Sheraton asked for Ronnie-she is the bomb!!!!!!!

PLATMAN,

Sorry-I stayed in December at the St. Regis (on pts) and was upgraded to a St. Regis suite (approx 1000sqft) which was very nice. I had upgraded to a executive suite using additional pts and the hotel upgraded me to the St. Regis. The hotel sit's on about 200 lush acres (18 holes golf course) with some rooms having views to the pacific ocean. The hotel boast of it's own private beach area with casual bar/resturant on the hill that overlooks the private beach area and the ocean-could be a very romantic spot-it was for us.

The wife and I were offered the choice of a regular room on the Astor floor or the St. Regis suite-it was no contest-the suite won out!

Excellent information. I booked the Sheraton for my current trip, and will book the St. Regis in August for that special romantic trip. Thanks.

If you're considering the St Regis, please remember that it is not on the beach, as is the Ritz Carlton down the road. It is across Highway 1 and a fairly long trek to the beach.

Also, the St Regis is at Monarch Beach, a good 10-15 minute drive north of Dana Point and in Orange County, a long way from San Diego. It is actually closer to SNA than SAN.

thanks for the heads up. I've got a 5 night stay in June, for 36,000 points I couldn't pass it up.

Any recommendations for dining in the area?

I strongly recommend a drive down to San Juan Capistrano. While the Mission is the main attraction, it is a really neat town. Behind the train station is the Los Rios historic district, a wonderful place to walk around.

And in the district is a really neat restaurant called the Ramos House Cafe. It is open for breakfast and lunch (8 am - 3 pm) but try not to arrive between 12 and 1 or you might have a long wait for a table. We had a great lunch, but Zagat's says they have one of the best breakfast's in the country!

I am a Platinum and I have stayed at all *wood properties in San Diego. All of them will recognize your platinum status and upgrade you accordingly. At the Marina you can expect a Club level at the least which will include free parking, continental breakfast, local calls and evening drinks. The Suites is the smallest suite I have ever seen but they have always put me on a club floor and included everything the Marina did. The Westin has upgraded me to some fantastic suites and at a minimum put me on a club floor but no free breakfast or parking. The W is brand new and their suite is actually two adjoining rooms but one has bedroom furniture and the other has couch and chairs. Both rooms have a nice desk and bathroom. The two four points showing a bit of wear but they almost always upgrade me to a large suite. The St. Regis is half way to Los Angeles and I have never been there.

Does any San Diego property have a club lounge ? with free drinks, breakfast and snacks in the evening ?

I mean the real San Diego properties. Also how far are they away from the cruise pier and Seaport Village ? Is the Westin in walking distance ?

The St.Regis Monarch Beach is not in San Diego at all. At least two hours north by car!

The Sheraton Marina is the only one with a club floor. Free parking for Plats. Sheraton Suites gives a full buffet breakfast for Plats but isn't in a very good location. The Westin is the best for location. It is next to Horton Plaza and the Gas Lamp district. The W is the best Hotel. I was upgraded to a suite as a Platinum. If you like to walk it is a walkable distance to seaport village.
