Stayed there in Cold ... Canada on a $74 rate. Was upgraded to a corner king with a sunken living area. Old place, but spacious room, and very nice people. Got $7.50 breakfast coupons, since lounge was closed.. I would recomend this place. Although I will never be there again, unless business calls..

I did a search but came up with very little (other than it's cold there in the winter)
on this property. Anyone been there? Do they have a shuttle from the airport? If not, would anyone care to guess the approximate taxi fare? Is it too far to taxi? The website says "self pay parking" but no price. Anyone know the daily parking fee? Any info would be appreciated.

I lived in Winnipeg for 5 years before jusst moving to Vancouver. The hotel should be around a $18-20.00 cab ride (Canadian $$) about a 15 minute ride. Nice hotel, if your a Plat. they usually give a large corner room with seperate sunken living room. Winnipeg is at its best this time of your. It should be warm.

It's not a bad property, as hotels go in Winnipeg. No shuttle, taxi/limo only.
There are a few restaurants and some semblance of a mall nearby. First time I was there, I didn't realize how FAR everything is from one another.

I stayed there about 3 weeks ago over a weekend. I did not inquire about their parking fee, since there was plenty of on-street parking at meters surrounding the hotel that is free from 5:30PM friday until 7AM Monday.
If they want more than $6 or $7 to park in their underground lot, you are better off parking in one of the surface lots nearby that will be no more than $5 or $6 for the whole day.

I stayed for about 6 months at that Sheraton, 4 nights per week. Never missed the upgrade, but it's definetely not a top-of-the-line sheraton.
It's an older hotel and when I first stayed there, I heard talk about reno's but never saw them happen. Last stayed there in August.
Not too sure about the parking, but as mentioned before, park the car on the surrounding streets, until Winter hits.
Cheers.

My recollection is that this is not a top notch hotel but not bad either. If you are looking for a downtown hotel, it would work. One thing with parking - you have to check in to get access to the u/g parking.

Actually I don't need a downtown location - just a starwood. Would you recommend the Four Points at the YWG airport as a better property than the downtown Sheraton??

The 4 Pts is new, clean and simple. There is a business centre downstairs - again very simple. I find the hotel staff to be very good.
Now, the restaurant is another issue but I will not go there. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

The rooms are probably equivalent to the downtown Sheraton, but the 4 points is a newer hotel. Expect to pay for parking at the 4 points (I believe $5-7 per day) since you are right at the airport. I have also found the 4 points to be pretty expensive relative to other Winnipeg hotels because of its airport location.
Other hotels nearby the airport (no more than a 2-3 minute drive away) such as the new Greenwood Inn are probably $20-30 cheaper per night than the 4 points.

I would stay somewhere else unless you have upgrades. This is an old, bland hotel. I also had heard a rumour about renovations. Stopped staying there this year and switched to the Fairmont. I don't know if any improvements have been made in the past 8 months though.

I'm resurrecting this thread as I just returned from Winnipeg where I actually stayed at both the airport Four Points and the downtown Sheraton.
In case anyone else is going to Winnipeg - it's no contest - the 4 Points wins, hands down!!!
It's probably one of the nicest 4 Points I've ever stayed at. It is literally 25 steps from the baggage claim to the front desk. New, clean, friendly. The room looked more like a full service Sheraton. I had a refrigerator, wet bar, 2 robes and full amenities. Also a vcr in everyroom with a full library at the desk of FREE videos. I would stay there again in an instant. Highly recommend.
The downtown Sheraton is nice, but older. Parking was $10 CAD. Room not as nice as the 4 points and the neighborhood is a bit rough.

In a mid-July weekend, I booked a so called Club-Level accomodation at the Sheraton Winnipeg.
What a disappointment! I have to admit that other FFlyers on the AC forum suggested that I stay elsewhere, and I should have listened.
At CAD 141.55 plus taxes the rate was quite comparable to Fort Garry (CAD 145.00) and Fairmont (CAD 158.00).
I booked on spg.com and found only at check in that the so called lounge was not hosted but had drinks and fresh fruit available. I was also handed a coupon for a continental breakfast at their restaurant and another for evening appetizers, normally served at the lounge. No use to argue with the desk agent that a coupon does not equal the lounge, they just would not get it.
The lounge was on my floor (the 20th) so I went to take a look. When I entered, it looked like a battlefield - after the battle. Food leftovers and used towels all over the place, no drinks, no fruit, no air conditioning at 30C+ heat! What a dump! I brought that to the attention of one manager whom I happened to meet on the 3rd floor when I went to inspect their pool (another disappointment). She later gave me 2,500 starwood points and that was it.
Late on at night, Winniopeg was hit by a strong rainstorms and suddenly, we were all withou power and running water. I walked down to the lobby where continental breakfast was offered to everybody (so much for the lounge or coupons). At that point, I had no reason to linger around any longer and I left in a hurry, never to return.
The hotel is not worth the Sheraton name as is currently. The rooms and public areas are reasonably clean but so shabby that you just want to get out of there. When I wrote to the hotel GM, I got his politically correct reply but nothing else in terms of compensation or offer to win me back. I guess they do not care. Never mind the SPG Gold status either.
I will not waste any more of my time on that. I just hope that nobody else will get stuck there as I did. :td:

Yes, it was Winnipeg.
What was I expecting prior to my arrival? Same Sheraton quality as you get in Toronto or Vancouver.
What would I expect now? Not much, if anything at all, sorry!

I've never been a huge fan of the Sheraton Winnipeg, try the Inn at the Forks. Brand new, great service and design. I was caught in a thunderstorm when the power went out a couple weeks ago and the staff was amazing, especially considering there was both a wedding and a young liberal convention happening at the same time and therefore the hotel was fairly full.

Stayed at the Sheraton Winnipeg last night.
Got upgraded to executive floor with lounge access. I wonder why they didn't provide me with a suite upgrade (given the hotel was not very full). My room is about 350-400 sq ft with a balcony. The room is set up as a business room with a fax machine/printer. High speed is 9.95 + tax Canadian a day.
The lounge on the 20th floor is opened weekdays for breakfast and evening canapes. On the weekends, coupons will be given to guests for use in the lobby restaurant. I was lucky that food was not cleaned up by 8.30pm (1/2 hour after the close time).
The deco of the hotel is rather tiring. From the info I read, the hotel is going through renovations in the Fall (might want to watch out for that).
Also, the gym is not functional at the moment. Guests are asked to go to a near gym with a $5 walk in fee.

I have a meeting in Winnipeg (shudder) and was looking to book the Sheraton Winnipeg. Lo and behold, it's no more! After a futile online search, I called up SPG reservations and was advised it was no longer a Sheraton. However, they didn't really elaborate what happened. I called up the hotel directly and was answered with "York hotel".
In reading Tripadvisor reviews, it seems it was still a Sheraton as recent as last month. Anyone know what's happened to it?

I do not know what happened but was there one weekend last summer.
That place is not worth the Sheraton name. I had quite a bit of correspondence with their manager but it was a waste of time at the end.
Even if it was a Sheraton, I would NEVER stay there again.

Thank goodness it's gone. It has to rank up there as close to the worst property I've stayed in. It's needed money for a long time to bring it up to Sheraton standards.
I guess they still aren't putting money into it if they couldn't get anyone to brand it and are going the independent route.

Yeah, I agree. It wasn't exactly the crown jewel of the Starwood empire. However, it was the only Starwood choice in downtown Winnipeg. I guess I'll have to hop over to the Hampton Inn now. ;)

WHY would anyone stay at that Sheraton when there is that awesome
YWG Four Points right at the airport? I'm not normally a big fan of 4 points, but the one there at the airport is my favorite!!! And given that the downtown Sheraton was about my least favorite Sheraton, it was a no-brainer. I'm glad it's gone.....perhaps they'll replace it with something better. In the meantime, I'll continue to enjoy the YWG Four Points....just wake up a little early and taxi downtown. It's SO worth it.

How far is the YWG Four Points relative to downtown? How long would it take to go from downtown to the hotel? Most importantly, does it have a decent gym?

oh good riddance. I practically lived in that hotel in 2004 since it was the only SPG property downtown and doing two-week stays at the much-nicer airport Four Pts wasn't attractive because I hate having to drive everywhere. at least the former Sheraton was in a pretty good location where you could walk to anything (except when it's -30C with a -60C windchill that is :) ), and I made Platinum on nights there, not stays (that's 50+ nights, ugh).
once I got there during a weird Sept. heat wave and the AC was off, and they couldn't switch the system from "heat" back to "cool" meaning my room was stiflingly hot. they gave me a fan but the next day I checked out and went to the Fort Garry when they told me that the AC wasn't going to be turned on "because it'll just turn cold again then it'll take two days to switch it back to heating." nice HVAC system there, folks...
The Fort Garry is a decent alternative. the rooms are smaller and not all that modern, but the restaurant is great, and the Sunday brunch is phenomenal. The Place Louis Real is OK if you want an apartment-type suite with a kitchen, but it's kind of ratty.
oh the YWG Four Pts has a "gym" but it's just a couple of treadmills and exercycles. no weights, at least not when I was last there. the Fort Garry will give you a free pass to the Assiniboine Health Club which is right behind the hotel and has a skyway connection. for free, it's a good gym, though the equipment is a little tired. the cable/pulley weight contraption at the old Sheraton is responsible for the rotator-cuff tear I've had for two years. grrr...

It hasn't been a Westin for a very long time now (at least 7 or 8 years if not more). Last time I was in the Peg it was a Fairmont.
I like the Four Points airport in Winnipeg, great location for jumping to almost anywhere in the city and tends to be very quiet.

There was a Sheraton in Winnipeg 2 years ago. That's gone as well. The 4P is pretty nice though. The staffs are very friend and the rates are good. Downtown is really just a $15-20 cab ride away (not too far).
