When using your card, you are supposed to get 3x points. My statements are not itemized, thus i just see an additional 1,234 points added to my SPG account as"SPG AMEX CC spend or bonus pts". Is my problem that I don't inform the front desk that I am using the SPG AMEX?

No Amex card offers 3x points on an ongoing basis. And if this is the SPG Amex you are talking about:
