Starwood Preferred Guest - Complimentary ELITE GOLD trial membership

Thanks to all this is a great informative board. I have been reading for months trying to take best advantage of my starwood memebership when TODAY out of nowhere I received an email from Starwood letting me know that I am an ELITE Gold member effective today through Feb. 28 - 2004.
Just thought I would share that as something for fellow non-golds to look for in their email.

I hope you enjoy your SPG Gold membership. You may see some snide comments in this thread, but know that they aren't directed at you. Us SPG Golds who 'earn it the hard way' are getting a little frustrated with SPG giving this level of status away to anyone with a pulse. On the other hand, this is how I was originally lured to the Starwood brand (through a promotion with AA) and I have left Hilton and HHonors behind forever (just try to redeem an award with Hilton as a non-Diamond). I hope this promo has the same effect on you and that you become a loyal Starwood customer for many years to come.

I was a Gold member for a few years until I stopped travelling for work and I was rightfully demoted a couple years ago.
However, travel with family and biz is picking up again - and will use Starwood exclusively as I have in the past. Thanks for the welcome.

I have heard that I can use my United Milage Plus memebership to upgrade to gold level with Starwood. How do I do that??
