I wonder if there is still a Sheraton in St. Petersburg, Russia ??? I found a Sheraton Nevskij Palace on several websites about St. Petersburg but I cannot find it on the starwood homepage (it only shows a sheraton in Moscow).
Dos anyone know what happened to this Sheraton ? Are there any other recommendable hotels in St. Petersburg apart from the Kempinski which is rather expensive ($440 per night excl. tax) ?
Thanx for your help !

Hmm. I was there a couple of summers ago. Maybe Lurker knows...
All the hotels on Nevski Prospekt are expensive. Perhaps try the Radisson?

It is no longer in the Starwood group. The hotel has a very complex history. A search on Petersburg in this board will produce the history. It now is run by the Corinthia group out of Malta, and is purported to be a Tunisian company.
I stayed there last spring, and thought it deserved about 3 of it's 5 stars.
This is the 300th anniversery year, and prices are very high after May 10 or so. and most places are already sold out.
The Moscow is acceptable, and should be available for around $100.
Post your question on the Russia board.

Thanks for the links. I didnīt want to post it on the Russia board as it seems that the last question answered there was when this board was called USSR http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
Good recommendations in the above postings. I usually rent an apartment. There a number of good rental agencies. If you are just there for a few days and you do not know the area, a hotel might be best though. The Astoria, the Angleterre, the Radisson and the Grand are all good choices. The Astoria and the Angleterre probably are most reasonable. Most of the other hotels in St. Petersburg are not near the city center and are several steps lower in quality. If not staying at a top property, I would rent an apartment if near the center.
If you need advice on a driver or guide, I would be happy to recommend one. In particular, you should have someone pick you up at the airport. In town, I walk a lot or take the excellent Metro.
If you get a chance, see the new film "Russian Ark" before you go. It takes place at the Hermitage.
I can also give recommendations for Moscow. In Moscow, I usually stay at the Sheraton Palace and have an excellent driver.

Good point about the driver. I had the Sheraton driver pick me up at the airport. If you want to visit the Hermitage, I definitely recommend hiring a guide before you go. The guide can help you get past the huge line to get in, as well as give you a great overview of the museum.
I paid about $75 for a university Art PhD student to spend the morning with me and it was well worth it. The Sheraton set it up so I imagine the other hotels can do the same.
BTW, my Sheraton stay was using points & a free Friday, and it really sucks that I can't use points in St. Petersburg anymore. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
