Starwood Preferred Guest - Bangkok

I wanted to fly to Bangkok in December in business class upgrading with miles. But I found everything unavailable. So I decided to fly to Hong Kong which was available and then find an immediate connection at a reasonable price. Thai airways offers the best connection but the price is outrageous, almost half of the cost to get to HKG from the US. Any suggestion?
