Starwood Preferred Guest - Where can I get the best rates?

Hello all!

I wanted to solicit your expertise on how to get the best rate. I have seen several of you say that you should call the property direct, but is this for the better rate or to ensure an upgraded room?

Also, I have seen people talk about a "qualifing rate to get credit for a stay." Does this mean a certain $$ amount must be paid in order to get credit?

Anyways, as you can see, I am new to this board, but feel at home already. Starwood now offers the Best Rate Guarantee on its own properietary web sites. In addition, any paid rate booked on these web sites - other than a package deal - is eligible or "qualifying" to earn Starpoints and stay credit towards promotions and elite status.

I'm sure the rest of the board will chime in on their suggestions, but please...if you find a better rate anywhere else within the Terms and Conditions of the Best Rate Guarantee offer...by all means take us up on it.

Sunday night I booked a stay in Orlando on SPG before I saw a Travelocity rate that was much less. I followed the instructions on the SPG site for the Best Rate Guarantee (total 3 minutes). Monday morning I received a confirmation by fax and email that they will honor the Travelocity rate AND take 10% off. Thanks for the great customer service!
