Do stays using this award count towards elite status? Do you earn starpoints?

Yes..You get starpoints for the paid portion of the stay.

How does the 50% Off Award actually work ?

I want to book a hotel which has 2 rack rates published on spg.com currently. One is $399, the other $414. I would like to reserve the $414 room using the award. According to my math the rate then should be $207. However customer service says that the rate is $266.... They could not explain Starwood's math....

Is there any way to do this online ? (Searches revealed that this is not possible but maybe things change...)

roesner, occasionally, the hotel has the rate entered wrong. This sounds like the case in this instance. If you care to let me know which hotel it is and what dates you are looking for, I can look into it further.
