I have been reserching were to take a golf Vacation at Starwood Properties next Year. I dont care for Florida since the coarses are usually to flat.
Ones that look interesting:
The Westin Resort and Spa, Wbhistler, British Columbia
The Westin La Cantera Resort, San Antonio
The St. Regis, Aspen

Any comments or other suggestions?
Thanks

Doing Ireland this August. Cant wait!

St Regis Monarch in Dana Point is not bad since I live nearby. I heard the Turnberry in Scotland is wonderful but missed the chance to play the Ailsa course...maybe next time.

The main reason it didnt make the first cut is it only shows the one coarse at the hotel and says nothing of other coarses near by. Are there other nice coarses we can play in the area?

The Whistler course is nice as is the Phoenician. Two opposite ends of the spectrum though in terms of weather and other amenities. Salishan in Oregon is also a nice property (I think they have a golf course nearby).

"St Regis Monarch in Dana Point"...

Pelican Hill is within 10 minutes of this hotel and is supposed to be one of the best courses in US.

Thanks, I looked at the St Regis at Dana Point again and it looks to good to pass up. I will need to look further into the coarses in the area.

Thanks again!

Ah Ireland. Thanks John for the offer. I am going for the first time for european links golf. However I am going with 7 others that have been there several times. We are playing in northern Ireland. Coarses include in order of play:
County Louth Golf Club
Portstewart Golf Club
Dunlace Coarse, Royal Portrush
Royal Co. Down
Portmarnock Golf Club
Druid Glen Golf Club

Flying in a day early and going to Curraugh race track.
Hotels in order to stay neat coarses:
Westin 1 night
Bushmill Inn 3 nights (oldest distillery)
Slieve Donard Hotel 1 night
Merrion Hotel 2 nights

Have a Mercedes motor custom coach and driver for the entire trip

Booked through Irish Links tours (the others really like this company. I love golf trips and I dont think I can beat this one.

sorry for rambling, I am getting excited (38 days to go).

For other courses close to Monarch Beach, I would suggest:

Pelican Hill - they have 36 fantastic holes but it will cost you $$$$.

Strawberry Farms in Irvine is a nice track, a little tight in places.

Aliso Creek is a little 9 holer right up PCH that is decent.

Shore Cliffs in San Clemente down PCH about 5 miles is a little beat up but playable.

For a further drive, but if you're a golf nut, definitely make the drive to Torrey Pines in La Jolla. It isn't that hard to get on and both courses are fun to play.

Feel free to email in private for any more help. My in-laws live in Laguna Beach and I have played many rounds around the area.

Do not stay in this hotel. I have never been treated worse anywhere in my life, and that includes how I was treated after corporate services took them to task. I will NEVER return to this hotel until I get some sort of apology from the hotel itself, which I seriously doubt will ever be forthcoming.

Save yourself the misery and go somewhere you will be treated well.

Stay away. Stay at the less expensive Ritz that's about a mile down the road an on the ocean.

I would stay at this hotel again in a heartbeat! The staff was exceptional, the rooms are great, the golf course is very nice and the grounds are well kept.

The Phoenician is guaranteed to be good. Dana Point is new and there have been mixed reviews. You might have a great time, or you might not. Plus the weather in the morning is quite overcast these days whereas PHX is always hot and sunny.

BoSoxFan45, I value your opinion highly, but a quick search on your name and "Dana Point" on this *wood-board didn't give me any clues as to why you were that dissatisfied?

Thanks for posting a trip report or a reference if I missed it?

Sorry to hear they didn't treat you well http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

andersja- Thanks for the compliment. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
OnePassLover- Thanks for finding the thread. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

There are several other problems we had, but the main problem was the level of didain with which we were treated- from being made to wait 3 hours to check-in, to being lied to that we would be called back 5 or so times, to being lied to about the Astor floor, to being lied to about the resolution.

I have been to the Phoencian also, and would choose that over Monarch Beach in a heartbeat.

1) Rooms are similar.

2) Golf is better- The Phoenician's 27 holes are supposedly wonderful. Plus you have Troon North, and 6 or 7 other world-class courses in the area.

3) The grounds at the Phoenician is better.

4) They probably won't treat you like they hate you at the Phoenician.

Thanks again! It is disappointing to here the posters issues at the hotel. The #1 thing I look for in a hotel is service. All hotels will have problems but it is how they handle the problems, that makes them a winner or loser. I am now looking at the new hotel in wine country.
This would mix 2 of my favorite things to do. Golf and Wine. I am thinking of spending a couple nights at Silverado as well. I Know this isnt a Starwood property, but does anyone have comments?

jjansen: You'd probably like La Cantera in San Antonio. It's in the Texas Hill Country and it's really pretty. Two beautiful golf courses surround the hotel, with Fiesta Texas amusement park on the other. Only problem is if you're visiting in May through, oh, October or so, the heat will probably be sizzling.

--Have considered any of the resorts in Hawaii which offer golf?--The courses are not "flat" and the scenery is spectacular, particularly, Kapalua Bay on Maui.--
