I currently held a reservation with a specific room (Deluxe Ocean View) with a King Bed. This is not a free night award either, I am paying for the entire stay with $$$. Should I expect the hotel to keep that room and bed type I originally reserved? It seems like I should not.

My confirmation at the time of booking states room and bed type, but now that it is less than 1 week away, the hotel (or someone else) switched us to 2 double beds - with the same room type.

Not the best accommodations for my wedding anniversary.

I called the Gold desk and they say they don't know why, and maybe I should call the hotel directly.

I would not think this is considered an upgrade either. The gold desk confirmed it is indeed the same room type with different bed arrangements.

Any suggestions? I specifically paid the extra $$$ to avoid wondering if I would get upgraded at check-in, and to what type of room, etc. as this is a special occasion.
