Not exactly true. I got an ABA promo for 1000 bonus points for each stay at a resort. Woohoo.8o
Confirmed that's all I'm getting.
Don't get me wrong. I know why companies do targetted promos. I'm just feeling a little left out here, and looking for some support.
Anyone else not get invited to any of the bonus parties?

Nothing here also. I sent an email to Starwood on Friday. After around 3 years as Platinum I have yet to receive anything other than the "let's include everyone" promo's.
Don't get me wrong. I like Starwood. It is just that I would like to think that Starwood would know that they could truely benefit from giving a few directed promo's to their best customers. Across the board. Not clients that are selected by a well constructed query within their vast reservations datawarehouse. In the case of Platinum's, I think a well designed promo instead of selectiveness of members would result in a good revenue return or spending of points http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

Count me in as well.
I guess with 46+ stays last year, and 8 so far this year, Starwood reckons I don't need
any further motivation to stay with them.
I plan to write to Starwood HQ about this irritating trend since William has stated (on another thread) that (unlike prior instances) he cannot add us to these promotions.

Hi, everyone, and thanks for coming.
It takes a lot of courage to stand up and acknowledge an emotionally draining problem such as this, and we should all be proud of ourselves. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
Seriously, though, it does seem that those of us who got nothing are in the minority. There are scores and scores of people posting their receipt of great promotions, and just 16 of us thus far who didn't get any of them.
My feeling is that targetted promos are legitimate and useful. But when they are so spread out that only a small minority DOES NOT get anything, well, it's hard not to feel left out for some inexplicable reason.
I'm not trolling for William to add me or anyone else to a promotion. I'm just stating my opinion that those who do the targetting should maybe either narrow their targets so that the small minority who gets left out in the cold doesn't feel personally slighted, or expand the promotions to include everyone.
A wide swath of promotions giving more points or making it less expensive to redeem points will inevitably result in award inflation for all those who did not recieve a promotion. Thus, it will not simply benefit those who were lucky enough to receive a promotion- if and when awards require more points, the barrels of extra points awarded to many people will be a proximate cause of the award inflation, which will hit those not targetted harder than those targetted.

Has anyone considered that it is only the end of January, and maybe there will be other promos coming for us? I highly doubt that the Starwood marking department does all of its work during the first 31 days of the year, sends out the promos, and then does nothing for the next 11 months. Most likely they are working on other promos which will be launched later.
Also, another possibility is that they tested these first three promos on some percentage of their customers to see who liked what and why, and then will adjust and re-launch in the coming months.
Just a thought. Any comments?
BoSoxFan45
Feb 4, 02, 5:36 pm
Of course it is just January. It's entirely possible that next time, we'll be the targetted ones and the others will be left out.
I doubt it, though. These promos are good for the vast majority of the year.
We didn't get these for a reason. I doubt those reasons, whatever they are will change with the "next round".
I for one, know that I have no others coming my way in the near future. There may be general promotions, which I'm sure we'll all be happy about.
Who knows, though. All I know is that lots of people got lots of goodies, and some of us got bubkus.

That's incredible insight, rgoel. What's more, it is precisely what is being done. The marketing department is testing various offers to see which is more popular across the board, so they are not elite member driven promotions.
I am assured that there will be more promotions coming in the next 11 months, some of which will be directed specifically to elite members, some not. By preserving the integrity of these test promotions now, it will only benefit the overall membership later if they reappear in a less conceptualized form.
I can assure you that the marketing folks have visited this thread and are aware of all your concerns. I hereby volunteer to let SPG Marketing test out all their promotions and offers on me. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
Since marketing reads these threads, here is a wishlist message from a LOP ("left out plats" as coined by GiveMeATicket4AnAirplane). I hope that SPG Marketing comes up with something that benefits us members personally and in a meaningful way (actually, which benefits the Mrs. because she is the one who is putting up with all my traveling away from home) like the free weekends again. She really enjoyed the weekends at the St. Regis and basically told me to "hurry up and stay at some more Starwood properties pronto so that we can stay at the St. Regis again."
A promotion which lets me extend my stay through friday night at the same hotel as I have been staying during the week is absolutely useless to me. Come friday afternoon (or thursday if I can sneak home early), I am on the plane and heading home. I (and the Mrs. expects me home pronto to take the young Pupster off her hands) could care less about extending my stay into the weekend.
A certificate for $xx is good, but only/especially if I can use a bunch of them at a time whenever I want. Again, the Mrs. plays a big part in deciding how my free ( http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif) time and our (mine/our somehow usually becomes hers) money is spent. If it means that we have to spend some big dough to stay at the St. Regis in order to use up a $50 certificate, I am not sure the Mrs. is gonna go for that in these uncertain economic times.
Just miscellaneous wishes and rambling from a LOP. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Thanks SPG.

I am glad to see so many people responding to this thread. Good job Bosox for starting it (HOW BOUT THEM PATS?) Anyway, as a Platinum member for some time now - I have yet to be including in on any promotion. If it were not for this board and my friend who constantly monitors it, I would have missed out on many promotions last year. I just don't understand what is needed to be done in order to get on this "special list." Maybe if we stop patronizing Starwood, they would beg for us back. I just wish that at least once in my lifetime I can receive an email from Starwood that is a special "targeted" promotion that I can't read about on the front page of their site. If a new club is started for jilted Plat members - count me in!

One thing I can say with relative confidence is that the selection is not random. It will have been tuned to meet some combination of vectors such as age, gender, profession, industry, home location, travel location, frequency, preferred room type, marital status, pet species, etc. so that the marketing department can extract the most information from the responses for future programs. The final selection to receive the promo's would have been a randomised selection from the result set.
Now either we have had the bad luck to have been randomised out of the current promotions or we just do not fit the target groups Starwood is currently studying.
Ultimately though, I will remain a Starwood client. Why? It's simple really. I like their product http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif.

Update: I've now been taken out of the "got nothing" club. I called SPG yesterday (the normal Gold customer svc number on the back of my membership card) to explain that I was very frustrated over being left out of promotions that others were getting. Specifically mentioned the 8000 pts/5 stays structure and the agent checked my account, mentioned past promotions that I had been in enrolled in (not related to any of the current ones), talked about how there are several current promotions going out in batches and that I might still be getting something, and after putting me on hold briefly to "look something up" said that I was now registered for the 8000/5 offer. I think she specifically said that she registered me for it right then, but not positive about this. It is possible that I was actually targeted for this promotion all along and just never got the email or postcard advertising it. Should have confirmed whether this was truly an exception or I was targeted all along, but hey it's great news either way so why argue! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Anyway I'm curious if others have had similar or different experiences when calling SPG about these targeted promos.

Called SPG Platinum UK today and asked about promotions (none of which has made its way to me), especially the "stay for 2 nights for half SPG points" one. Imagine my surprise then when the kind lady suggested that this was not a targetted promotion but was available to all, and has now enrolled me. It appears to be the same promotion (called something like 'Redeeming is Believing') whereby 2 stays between now and end-April allow half-point stays until end-Sep.

I would suspect that influential was targeted for the promo, but perhaps he just got very lucky with the agent! But this does bring up another question for William:
How does one find out IF they were targeted for promotion(s)? Perhaps you never get the e-mail or postcard for whetever reason (I have much trouble with my e-mail and snail-mail). Since most of the SPG promos Mr Fish has participated in have required registration, how would one find out about it? I tried to find out today, by calling SPG Plat, if Mr Fish was eligible for any of the current promos. The Plat Conc asked me which programs specifically I was looking for.. Without names or code, how would I check them? I DID ask whether he was "marked" for ANY promos; the response was to ask me which ones I was looking for.. This is quite a dilemma! If he is not targeted, so be it. But what if he is and we just don't know about it???
UPDATE: I called back and played dumb, asking about promos again. This time I was told Mr Fish was on none of the e-mail promo lists, BUT she was able to enroll him in one of the BONUS PTS/5 STAYS promos (slightly different than the others posted here), so perhaps this one is NOT targeted??? Now I am more confused than ever...

Yes, this would be especially helpful. For all I know, I may have been targeted for all the cool promotions and never knew. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif Maybe my email is being filtered and the (two)dogs are chasing the mail carrier away and/or eating the snailmail. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
An easy solution would be to have a notification of what promotions we are being targeted for posted on our SPG account online. This way, when I check my account, I can see what promotions I have been targeted for and then enroll as I see fit.
I understand the concept of targeted promotions, but when we don't even know if we have been targeted is kind of silly. Kind of defeats the purpose of trying to determine which promotions provide the best feedback and response when the responses may not necessarily accurately reflect the targeted population. If SPG marketing targets 1,000 "select" members for a promotion to determine if the overall membership would be interested in free dog toys with every stay, but the only five members who received their email or snail mail and responded were dog owners and therefore biased in favor of the promotion, probably not too accurate of a study.
Maybe SPG marketing is secretly testing the efficiency of the various delivery methods for the direct marketing association (junk mailers) and just using the "targeted promotions" concept as the research vehicle? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

I can understand targeted promotions involving bonus points, but as a "real" Starwood Platinum (i.e 20+ stays last year) I am angry that Starwood is now offering double stay credit to some members. I, on the other hand, have still not received a single offer.
I seem to recall Starwood mentioning something about how they wanted to maintain the integrity of the Platinum level. Doesn't seem to be the case, does it?

Just spoke to SPG and it's definitely called "Redeeming is Believing". Unfortunately, the foreigners manning the SPG centre in Cork can barely speak English(/Irish), so couldn't get much more than that. Confirmed also that one can only be enrolled as a result of receiving the email (even though I didn't) and there's nowhere on the website to show what the promotion is all about. When I explained that I had never received an email and I'd been enrolled purely by calling and asking to be enrolled, they couldn't explain it - they've now agreed to send the email onto me (a sort of reverse promotion).
To add further confusion, the lady mentioned that I'd been auto-enrolled on another promotion called "Redeeming is Believe 50%" whereby you can stay a 2nd night for 50% of the points required for the 1st night. Given the qualification for this offer is the same as the original (2nd night free) offer, can't see where this one really fits in.
Now, I'm confused...

Not receiving any offers from Starwood in 2002 has simplified my where-to-stay decision-making for Q1. Because I maintained HHonors Diamond status with stays is 2001, HHonors is doubling all of my stay credits during the first quarter of 2002. By March 31, with 14+ stays, I will have assured my Diamond status for 2003, and will be ready to take advantage of all those Starwood promotions coming to Platinums in Q2, Q3 and Q4.

My preference is always a SPG hotel. But in Silicon Valley right now, SPG hotels prices are a bit out of touch with reality. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif
It is hard to justify to the bean counters back at the office paying SPG prices when they know that there are better prices at the other major chains in Silicon Valley(work does regular surveys of hotel room prices and puts out "recommended" hotels.
I know "competitor's program" isn't quite as good as SPG, but due to the lack of promotions from SPG, right now (until March 31, 2002) I am staying at the "competitor". Why?...their prices put them on the "recommended list" and also, their promotions are excellent right now. For me, 2 stays for a box of Top Flite golf balls, 4 stays for your choice of Top Flite pitching wedge or san wedge, 6 stays for a $50 gift certificate, 10 stays for a set of Top Flite clubs and golf bag!!!!!!! 10 stays by the end of this quarter and I have myself a new golf bag, a new set of clubs, some golf balls and $50. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif
(edited by onedog to remove competitor's name as I am not trying to drive business to this competitor, just trying to highlight what else is out there for us LOPs.)

Agreed.
I'm also concentrating on maintaining status with Hilton, and since I'm one of the FOPs (Forgotten Overlooked Platinums)I've been taking advantage of other special offers, such as a $100.00 Amazon Gift certificate for booking Candlewood Suites on line (min. 4 night stay). Just snagged a couple of those certificates with a recent two room booking.

Well, just checked my on-the-road AOL account and emails for the first time in a week, and low and behold, I was selected for one of these promos! I just need to stay 5 times at Starwood properties between Feb 1st and April 30th, and I will get a bonus of 10K. Already have one stay from last weekend in Vancouver, and another coming up in Edmonton next weekend, with Melbourne a week later...
Guess I'm happy now. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif Hope the rest of you get something soon.

I have received a mailing from a hotel offering double points through the first quarter, but none of those other high point offers.
I'll wait, I'm sure something will come along. And if not, it's not like lives depend on it. And I won't stop staying at my favourite hotels over some imagined slight. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
