Starwood Preferred Guest - Transfering Starpoints into airline miles, worth it or not?

This seems to be a very popular feature with many members here. I have never done that because I think Starpoints is more valuable due to its scarcity (much more difficult to earn than miles). However, if you look at the value of each starpoint vs. a standard airline mile, a starpoint usage would be considered excellent if the value per point is any way near $0.05. Whereas with airline miles, you can easily gain a value of $0.1 per mile or more. In this sense, airline miles seem more worth the cost, isn't it.

Now with the new Flight and Stay award, you get 50,000 miles by spending 60,000 or 70,000 Starpoints, so you get roughly 10,000 points of discount on your Cat. 3 or 4 five nights stay, which is an interesting alternative b/c next time any of you considering transfering points to miles, you can wait till you get 60 or 70 K and then transfer to get a discount of about 10K on your hotel stay. In a way, it makes it much easier to get a value of at least $0.05 per starpoint spent, so that's very positive. But what you are going to do with the miles? Transfer it to your usual airline programs where you likely have a big balance anyway? Whether it's 50K more or less shouldn't make a big difference, so why bother? I can think of transfering miles to programs that I don't usually earn or don't have anything at all such as Air France's Fréquence Plus, which can be interesting or say transfer to Virgin Atlantics. Scarcity for scarcity, that might make more sense. I don't know.

What do you think? Do you usually transfer points to miles, if so why or why not?
