Starwood Preferred Guest - Why isn't Starwood doing the double Optima miles?

I see that the Delta Optima will be offering double miles for a month. Why doesn't the Starwood Optima do the promotions like that? William, enlighten me please.

Because think 1 Starwood mile is worth 2 or3 Delta miles.

Think about this. For every $2000/3000 you spend with Amex=1 free weekend nite at level 1/level 2.. They dont want to make it $1000/1500...

One is an airline. The other is a hotel. Different industry.

So what you're all saying is that the doubled portion would come from Delta/Starwood and not AMEX? I don't really know. I thought it was AMEX because a couple of years ago, before Delta had the permanent double miles in supermarkets, there was a temporary promo for the double miles, and both Delta and Starwood had the same offer.

The only time I saw double offered was for clickrewards when they said 1 clickreward for 2 starpoints. Those were the days...

None of my 500 bonus points for using the new card or the 2 for 1 are showing up. Typical deal Amex says call Starwood and then Starwood says call AMEX. These promotions are such a hassle I get the card then have to fight for the bonuses. This has been always the biggest downfalls to promotions Getting them posted.

milesrus, I just checked your account and you have received credit for using the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express every month since it was relaunched, including the 1,000 Starpoints bonus for using it for the first time.

If this is in reference to American Express' Summer Promotion, you have never been enrolled. The URL is provided here:

Please be sure to read the Terms and Conditions carefully, and since this is an American Express Membership Rewards promotion, they are more likely to have answers that Starwood Preferred Guest would not. Still, here is another link to this promotion's details:

So William, do you have the answer to my question?

Starwood Lurker

No, UserMark, I don't. American Express has not made the same offer with us, probably because the card is no longer an Optima card. Whether they will or not for the Starwood Preferred Guest Credit Card from American Express remains to be seen, but we have not yet completed the American Express Membership Rewards Summer Promotion, so we will just have to wait and see.

I have sent you a seperate email, but according to Amex the new card gives you either 2 or 3 points when using the card at Starwood properties and 1 point elsewhwere. In addition after the first usage at a Starwood you get 500 points at each Starwood to a maximum of 6000 points. The 500 points nor the 2 points per dollar are posting.

I don't think that the new card gives 2 or 3 points at Starwood properties. It still gives only 1 point per dollar at Starwood properties. The confusion may be because the misleading ads lump in the 2-3 points per dollar for SPG members. These 2-3 points per dollar are given irrespective of which credit card you present at the front desk, and it is very irresponsible for Amex to lump these in the card benefits.

Here is what my Starwood American Express statement dated 9-23-01 says. You earn 1 Starpoint for every dollar spent on everyday purchases,PLUS,you earn at least 2 Starpoints for every dollar spent at participating Starwood Hotels & Resorts. I would assume this if like the Hilton Amex that gives three points for everyday purchases and five points at Hilton Hotels. If they are misleading us by saying we are getting something that we were already getting than that is borderline dishonest.

Just so this is perfectly clear, Preferred Plus members will get a total of 3 Starpoints for transactions that are charged at Starwood Preferred Guest participating properties. One Starpoint comes from American Express for using the card and two come from being an elite member of Starwood Preferred Guest and is given in your regularly credited stay transaction. All of the Starpoints do not come from American Express, so these credits will appear as separate transactions.

milesrus, we are still working to understand why your 500 Starpoints bonuses for up to ten stays are not being credited.

Since when did elite members get 2 points per dollar at Starwood properties? It was 3 points per dollars for elites, no?

We have always received 2 points per dollar plus another if your an elite member. This is the Starwood points for each dollar spent at a hotel.

Sorry for any confusion, PG. The reference of one Starpoint from American Express and two Starpoints from Starwood Preferred Guest is for Preferred Plus members. It would probably have been more correct to say "at least two Starpoints" to account for Gold and Platinum elite bonuses that would add another Starpoint to the transaction.

Thanks for the clarification. So for Starwood hotel stays, the Starwood Amex card gives 1 point per dollar.

Preferred and Preferred Plus members receive another 2 points per dollar, and Gold and Platinum members receive another 3 points per dollar, irrespective of whatever card (or cash) they use to settle their hotel bill.
