Is anyone thinking of attending the World Cup next year and, if so, how are you planning your accommodation?

Would you mind telling me the dates? I have some trips to Tokyo next year and this sounds like it might be a time to avoid planning a trip.

The World Cup 2002 is shared by (South) Korea and Japan. The opening is in Seoul on May 31, with the final scheduled for June 30 in Yokohama. There are 20 venues, 10 in each country - the venue closest to Tokyo is a city (suburb)? called Saitama.

The link below should take you to the FIFA site - clicking on the COMPETITION and VENUES tabs on top should show you when matches will take place in each city. Good luck!

Premex, if it's in Saitama, I don't think it would affect hotel occupancy in Tokyo at all, maybe marginally. The Westin Tokyo (along with the Park Hyatt) still seem to maintain relatively high occupancy of well above 80% in the post-Sept. 11. They used to be something like close to 100%. Just read it in a local paper last week.

Last week I got a room at the Westin and it wound up full. The Sheraton in Chiba was already sold out when I did my web search.

Busy busy.
