Starwood Preferred Guest - Any Starwoods in or near Stuttgart?

I may be flying to el Deutschland soon and I was wondering if there's a Starwood property in or near Stuttgart? I tried a search on Sheraton's site but wasn't too familiar with some of the matches returned. While there were some in big cities I instantly recognized (Frankfurt, Munich, etc), I wasn't sure if a Stuttgart-area hotel might be in a small neighboring town.
Thanks!

An anticipated welcome to STR.
I too checked the *wood web site and can report that none of the less familiar towns are close enough to Stuttgart. FRA and MUC are the closest, but it's still about 90 minutes by ICE train.
There are a couple of really nice hotels across the street from the main train station however. What dates are you looking at?
I would recommend the Intercontinental in Stuttgart, which is a 5-minute walk from the railway station overlooking a park. In the absence of Starwood properties, that's where I always stay.
I'm surprised Starwood haven't addressed their very patchy coverage throughout Europe by buying up another chain. The UK in particular is very badly served with just three locations: London, Edinurgh and Ayr.

Thanks for the quick reply, SMessier. I think the Dorint Hotel Fontana is near where I have to be, but I am not sure.
Do you recommend that I rent a car in Stuttgart? While I'd love to drive the Autobahn, I'm not familiar with the roads nor do I know how easy it is to drive in Germany.
Should I fly into Frankfurt and drive or possible take that ICE train to Stuttgart? I know there is a flight, but the distance seems so short between the 2 cities..
Thanks in advance - I hope I get to go on this trip to Germany!

There are 2 Dorints in the city. One is a "Budget Dorint" in the center, the other just a regular Dorint in a part of the city called Stuttgart-Vaihingen. (And also 2 minutes by car from where I live, fwiw). S-Vaihingen is about 20 minutes from the center by tram, 15 minutes by car. It is -I think- one of the nice areas in the city, and with good access to the center. But it is not a very lively area, though there is a little "city centre" with a movie theater that only shows movies in English.
Public transportation is very good in the city, so depending on your travel needs renting a car may not be necessary. If you want to drive on the autobahn and see how fast your car can go, well that's something else of course. Some years back I pushed a Ford Escort 131mph. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
Even with a short layover, you can probably get from FRA to STR faster by train. There are direct trains from the airport to Stuttgart every 2 hours. 88DM/$40 each way. (There are trains more often of course, but you would need to switch along the way.) Scheduled trip duration: 1h11. Driving would take longer with traffic and speed limits in certain areas near cities, etc...
Let me know if you have any other questions. And I will note that I think this is post 600 for me. Hooray?

Delta flies non-stop ATL-Stuttgart. If you fly to FRA, I would take the train, like recommanded from SMessier.
I know only the Steigenberger Hotel (near main station). I think it's a bit expensive, but the food was very good.
A bit outside is Remstal with very nice wine-restaurants; very "gemuetlich" and good food.

Too bad Starwood doesn't have a property in the Stuttgart area - I'd have made top status. (40 nights so far this year, with a potential for up to 60 more before the end of the year.)
Any plans to buy/build one in the near future?
I put in a vote for Cologne!
There's a very nice Hyatt but I would like to see a *Wood property there.

FYI, I think these are posts from 2001 before Le Meridien joined Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide. ;)

Thanks - did not see this. The rule "never bump a very old thread" makes sense.
LM in Stuttgart: Very nice place, still centrally located, however close to plenty of green parks, good Platinum recognition and certainly nicer than the somehow tired properties close to the station.

Take a look on the first post (2001).
The LM just opened after that date ;)
My experience on this hotel:
Superb - one of the best LM I've stayed in.
Location is a little bit off-side. But within a 10 mins walk you'll arrive at the city center.
Great Lobby, great rooms, great breakfast!

Just stayed at the LM a couple of weeks ago. While I was not impressed with the rate (but with the strong Euro this would have been the complaint anywhere ) - it's a nice hotel located across the park from the train station. A 10 minute walk gets you into the central shopping district. Beds were comfy, bathroom very nice. Overall a very clean hotel. Breakfast was excellent also. No Gold recognition that I could tell, but I don't expect much from that these days anyhow. Didn't need the 4PM checkout so didn't try.

I agree, but try posting a new thread about it and others will rail you for not doing a search! Thanks for your feedback about the hotel. Is there public transportation to the hotel from the airport? Is there a concierge/executive lounge at this hotel?

Since we have a master thread on Le Meridien Stuttgart, I am locking this thread and direct your attention to it (http://flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=560710). I've copied the review of the property from this thread over to the referenced one.
